Chapter 4

I signed the paperwork at 6:47 in the evening.

A nurse brought the forms on a clipboard. I read each line. I signed where indicated. My handwriting was the same as it always was.

The funeral home coordinator answered on the second ring. I gave him Oaklyn's full name, her date of birth, the hospital's address. He asked about arrangements. I told him I'd call back with the details by morning. He said he was sorry for my loss. I said thank you and ended the call.

Transportation was next. I made that call standing in the corridor outside the surgical suite, my back against the wall, the phone warm against my ear. The woman on the other end walked me through the process in a voice designed for exactly this. I wrote down the reference number on the back of a receipt from my wallet.

Then I called Garrett.

He picked up on the third ring. I could hear background noise—a room, movement, the particular ambient sound of a life continuing.

"Oaklyn died on the operating table tonight," I said.

I hung up.

I walked to the elevator. I pressed the button for the parking garage. I rode down alone.

My car was on level two, near the stairwell. I got in. I put my hands on the wheel.

I sat there for eleven minutes. I know because I watched the clock on the dashboard.

At some point in those eleven minutes I cried. It wasn't loud. It wasn't long. It was just something my body did without asking me, a brief and involuntary thing, and then it was over, and I wiped my face with the back of my hand and thought about what still needed to be organized.

The flowers. The readings. The chapel booking. Lucas—I needed to call Lucas, but not tonight, not until I had the right words, not until I could say it without my voice doing something I couldn't control.

I started the car and drove home.

---

The funeral was on a Thursday.

Diana came. Three of my colleagues from school came. A handful of friends who had known Oaklyn from before—from the years when our life had been ordinary and small and sufficient. Dr. Shen sent flowers with a card I couldn't read all the way through.

The chapel was quiet. The light came through the side windows at a low angle, the way it does in October, and it fell across the white flowers on the casket and made them look like something from a painting.

I sat in the front row and kept my hands folded in my lap and looked at my daughter's name on the program.

Oaklyn Jensen.

Seven years old. Nine years old. The way she arranged her IV line over the rail, precise, keeping things tidy. Two fingers on my cheek. *You always are.*

I kept my hands very still.

---

Garrett was standing near the chapel entrance when the service ended. Dark suit. Hands at his sides. He looked like a man who had arrived somewhere too late and knew it.

I saw Sylvia through the window before I saw him.

She was in the parking lot, maybe thirty feet from the chapel doors—close enough to be visible, far enough to be tasteful. She was holding a tissue. She touched Garrett's arm as a mourner passed, and he turned toward her slightly, and she said something close to his ear, and he nodded.

I watched this for the length of one breath.

Then I walked out of the chapel.

I didn't look at Garrett. I walked past him—past his dark suit and his hands at his sides and whatever he had been about to say—and I crossed the parking lot in a straight line.

Sylvia saw me coming. Something shifted in her face. She started to arrange it into something soft and appropriate, and she almost managed it.

I slapped her hard enough to turn her head.

The sound was flat and clean in the cold air. She stumbled back a step. The tissue fell from her hand.

Around us, people had stopped moving. I was aware of that—the stillness, the held breath, the mourners frozen on the chapel steps. I didn't look at any of them.

I turned to Garrett.

He was looking at me with an expression I didn't have a name for and didn't need one.

"Sign the divorce papers," I said. "I'll have them sent."

I walked back to my car.

I didn't look back. There was nothing behind me I needed to see.

I got in. I put my hands on the wheel. I sat there for a moment in the quiet, and outside the window the October light was doing what it always does—low and golden and indifferent—and somewhere in the parking lot Garrett was still standing next to the woman he had chosen, and my daughter's name was on a program in my coat pocket, and I had calls to make, and paperwork to file, and a life that was going to keep requiring things of me whether I was ready or not.

I started the car.

I drove.
