Chapter 2

My hands were still wrapped in gauze when I started packing, so everything took longer than it should have. I didn't care. I folded each shirt flat, stacked them by color, and told myself the ache in my palms was just skin healing, nothing deeper.

Two bags. One box. That was all of me that had ever really lived in that apartment, it turned out, three years condensed into things I could carry down eleven flights without help. I left the espresso machine he'd bought me — he'd never once used it himself, just liked watching me make it for him — and I left the throw pillows Kyra had "helped" pick out the one time she'd insisted on redecorating my living room like it was hers to redecorate. I took my books. I took the framed photo of my grandmother on the boardwalk in Rockaway, squinting into the sun, laughing at something out of frame. I took nothing that had his fingerprints on it.

My phone buzzed on the counter while I taped the last box shut.

**Carson:** You'll be back by Friday. You always are.

I looked at it the way you'd look at weather — a fact, not a feeling. I didn't answer. I taped the flaps down harder than I needed to.

Twenty minutes later: **Carson:** This is embarrassing, Avery. For both of us. Come home.

Then, an hour after that, when I still hadn't replied: **Carson:** Don't push me. You don't know what I can do to you.

I read that one twice. Something in my chest used to flinch at a sentence like that — used to scramble, used to calculate how to fix it before it got worse. Now I just felt a flat, clean kind of calm, the sensation of standing very still while something burns down around you and realizing, almost with surprise, that you are not the thing on fire.

I carried the box to my car myself. The doorman offered to help and I told him I had it. I did.

That night, in the studio I'd rented off a listing I'd found in ten minutes flat — small, ugly carpet, radiator that clanked — I sat on the floor with my laptop and opened the folder I hadn't opened in months. Three years of screenshots. Audio files with names like *hotel_incident_4* and *kyra_voicemail_march*. Photos of bruised knuckles I'd photographed for no reason except that some instinct in me, some quiet, patient part of myself, had known I would need proof one day, even when I didn't know what I'd need it for.

I didn't decide anything that night. I just looked. I let myself see, all at once, the shape of what I'd survived, laid out in folders sorted by date like invoices. My thumb hovered over file after file. I didn't press play on any of them. Not yet. I just needed to know it was all still there, still mine, still true.

Across town — I didn't have to imagine this part either, because Kyra made sure everyone eventually would know — she was working her own version of a night shift.

I knew the pattern by now, could practically see it from the outside: the first call would come around nine, her voice thin and cracking, timed for whatever hour Carson might start second-guessing himself, might start missing me instead of resenting me. *I just feel like this is my fault, Carson, everyone's going to think I ruined everything, she hit me and now everyone's going to say I'm the reason—*

The second call would come later, closer to midnight, softer, more wounded. *You don't understand what it's like to be the person everyone blames. She got to just walk away and be the victim. What about me?*

I'd lived beside that voice long enough to know its choreography.每一次 it found the exact seam in Carson where guilt lived, and pressed.

He called me once, near 1 a.m. I watched the screen light up my ceiling and didn't answer. Voicemail. I listened to it twice, at low volume, in the dark.

"You humiliated her, Avery. In our home. She's — she's not doing well. This isn't just about us anymore, you understand that, right? You need to think about who you're hurting."

I deleted it. Not out of anger. Out of something closer to relief — the sound of a door that had already closed finishing its swing.

I didn't cry that night either. I lay on the floor of my ugly little studio with my bandaged hands folded over my stomach and looked at the water stain on the ceiling shaped vaguely like Florida, and I thought about Enzo's text from that afternoon — a photo of a coffee cup ring on a napkin, captioned *found this today, thought of your terrible taste in tables* — and I smiled up at the water stain like it was something worth smiling at.

Somewhere in that apartment I used to call home, Kyra was crying into a phone, spinning her thread tighter. Let her spin it. I had a folder full of receipts, and for the first time in three years, I wasn't afraid to open it.
