Chapter 2

I deleted Mike's number at 3 a.m. By 8, I was standing on the stage of Harlow Hall with a script in my hand.

"From the top, Flora," Mr. Pruitt called from the third row. "Balcony scene. Give me heartbreak."

Heartbreak. I could do heartbreak now.

"*O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?*"

My voice carried all the way to the back wall. When I finished, the room stayed quiet for a long moment. Then Jenna, our stage manager, started clapping.

Mr. Pruitt took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "That," he said, "is why you got this part."

Juliet. I'd wanted her since I was nine, since my mom took me to a summer production in the park and I'd cried through the whole last act. The theater school scholarship panel would be in the audience on opening night. One good performance, and I'd have a real future.

Mike didn't get to take that too.

I spent the next week sewing my costume by hand. Ivory satin, gold thread at the sleeves, a hundred tiny pearl buttons down the back. Every stitch was one less minute I spent thinking about him.

Then Friday came, and the official cast list went up on the bulletin board.

A crowd had already gathered. People went quiet when they saw me. A few glanced away.

I pushed through to the front.

**JULIET — Amy Lindqvist**

I read it three times. The letters didn't change.

"Flora..." Jenna touched my elbow. "I'm so sorry. I don't know what happened."

"I do," I said. "Or I'm about to."

---

Mr. Pruitt's office door was half open. He was packing a coffee mug into a box like he wanted to hide inside it.

"You gave me the role," I said. "Two weeks ago. In writing."

He didn't look up. "Close the door, please."

I shut it hard enough to rattle the frame.

"Was I bad? Tell me I was bad. Tell me she was better. I'll walk out right now."

"You weren't bad." He finally lifted his head. He looked about ten years older than yesterday. "You were the best Juliet I've seen in this building."

"Then *why*?"

He sat back down. "The football boosters fund half our budget. Lights, sets, the spring tour. Yesterday I got a call. The team captain had spoken with them personally."

My stomach dropped. "Mike."

"He made it very clear. If Miss Lindqvist wasn't cast, the money would go away." Mr. Pruitt spread his hands. "Twenty kids lose their show, Flora. Or one kid loses a part."

"One kid loses her scholarship."

He flinched. That was the only answer I got.

---

When I came back into the rehearsal hall, Amy was waiting. Of course she was. She stood center stage in a soft gray sweater, hands pressed together like a girl in a church painting.

"Flora!" Her eyes were already wet. "Oh my God, I swear I didn't know. I'll tell Mr. Pruitt right now. It's yours. I don't even want it."

Everyone was watching. Fifteen cast members, three techs, Jenna with her headset half on.

"Then go tell him," I said.

Amy blinked. She hadn't expected that.

"Of course," she said. "I just—can we talk first? Alone?"

She took my arm and steered me into the costume room. The second the door closed, her tears disappeared like someone had flipped a switch.

"Here's how this goes," she said. "You smile. You say congratulations. You take whatever little part Pruitt throws you."

"And if I don't?"

She picked a thread off my sleeve. "Then I tell people you've been harassing me since the breakup. Mike backs me. You're out of this club by Christmas."

"You'd really do that? Over a *play*?"

"It's not about the play, babe." She smiled. "It's about you finally learning your place."

She walked out. I heard her voice through the door, trembling again. "She needs a minute, you guys. She's really hurt."

---

I found my costume an hour later.

It hung on its rack with the satin slashed open from collar to hem. Long, ugly cuts. The pearl buttons lay scattered across the floor like teeth.

I made a sound I'd never heard myself make before.

"What happened?" Jenna rushed in. Then three more people behind her. Then Amy, pushing through.

"Oh no." Amy's hand flew to her mouth. "Flora, your dress..."

"Somebody cut it."

"Who would do this?" Amy turned to the room. "Wait. Didn't someone say Flora's locker was open earlier?"

Before I could move, a sophomore had already pulled it open.

A pair of fabric shears sat on top of my sweatshirt. Bits of ivory thread were still stuck in the blades.

The whole room went cold.

"Those aren't mine," I said. "I left them on the sewing table this morning. *Anyone* could've—"

"It's okay." Amy's voice wobbled. "You're upset. I understand. But you didn't have to ruin your own dress just so it would look like I did it."

"That doesn't even make *sense*!"

The door banged open.

Mike strode in still wearing his practice pads. Someone must have texted him. He didn't look at the dress. He didn't look at the scissors. He walked straight to me and clamped his hand around my wrist.

"Apologize to her."

"Let me go."

"Apologize. *Now*." His grip tightened until my fingers tingled. "Stop embarrassing yourself, Flora. Amy is the one I love."

Every eye in the room was on us. Somebody had their phone up.

My eyes burned, but I didn't drop them.

"Then why did you spend three years making me believe you loved me?"

Something moved across his face. Just for a second. His jaw slackened, and his hand loosened on my wrist.

Nobody breathed.

Then Amy sniffled behind him, and his fingers clamped down again.

"Because you made it easy," he said. "Say sorry."

I didn't.

So the decision got made for me.

---

By six o'clock, I had an email from the student activities office. *Suspended from all Drama Society activities pending review.* By seven, a second one. *Your scholarship interview has been withdrawn.*

By eight, the video was on the campus forum.

**Top comment:** imagine being this obsessed with a guy who never wanted you lol

I closed the laptop.

Then I got out my sewing kit, spread the ruined satin across my bed, and started stitching. I didn't know what I was fixing it for. My hands just needed to do something besides shake.

My phone rang at 10:14.

**Ethan.**

I wiped my face with my sleeve and cleared my throat twice before I answered.

"Hey, bud."

"Flo! Guess what." My little brother sounded like he'd had three energy drinks. "I'm coming up tomorrow. Aunt Carol's driving me. I'll be there by noon."

"Tomorrow?" My needle froze mid-stitch.

"Yeah! And I've got a surprise for you. A big one. You're gonna freak."

"Ethan, this week's kind of—"

"Please? I haven't seen you since August. I've been saving up for this forever."

He was sixteen and still said *forever* like he meant it.

I pressed the back of my wrist to my mouth until I could trust my voice.

"Okay," I said. "Noon. I'll be waiting out front."

"Best sister ever. Love you, Flo."

"Love you more."

He hung up. I sat there holding the phone against my chest.

It buzzed again.

**Instagram:** *amy.lindqvist liked your photo.*

I tapped it. An old picture, from my profile two summers ago. Ethan at the lake, grinning, missing half a front tooth from a skateboard fall. *My favorite human,* I'd written.

Weird. She'd never liked my posts before.

I shrugged it off and went back to the dress.

I didn't know that, across campus, Amy had already screenshotted that picture and sent it to Derek Kowalczyk—the rich boy everyone at this school was afraid of.

Or that her message had only five words.

*Her brother. Tomorrow. Have fun.*
