Chapter 5

I spent two weeks building a case like I'd build a merger. Every document cross-referenced. Every timestamp verified. Every piece of evidence tagged and indexed in a system only Maisie and I could access.

The surveillance footage Kash thought was private ran both ways now. I had him and Sienna in the Hamptons estate. I had their messages—months of them. I had financial records showing payments from Sienna's shell accounts routing to an LLC that paid for Eleanor Lane's medical bills and Nora's tuition.

I had the police report on Audrey Wright's death. The closed investigation. The legal proxy Sienna used to make it disappear.

I had everything.

Maisie found the detective through a friend of a friend. Former prosecutor. Specialized in white-collar crime with a side interest in cold cases. I met him in a coffee shop in Brooklyn where no one from my world would ever go.

I gave him a flash drive. "Preliminary evidence. Conspiracy to commit fraud. Possible accessory to murder from thirty years ago. I need rapid response capacity Saturday night. Midtown ballroom. Between eight and midnight."

He studied me. "You're setting a trap."

"I'm closing one."

He took the drive. "I'll have a team ready. But if this goes sideways—"

"It won't."

He didn't look convinced. But he nodded.

I also met with my company's IT director. Told him I wanted personal override access to the gala's presentation system. Framed it as redundancy. He didn't ask questions. By Thursday I had admin credentials and a remote trigger I could activate from my phone.

Kash asked why I was working so much.

I told him the gala was stressing me out.

He made me tea. Rubbed my shoulders. Told me everything would be perfect.

I believed the last part.

---

Friday night, Kash asked me to close my eyes.

We were on the couch. He'd made dinner—cacio e pepe, the dish from his class. It had been perfect. Everything he did was perfect.

"I have something for you," he said.

I closed my eyes. Felt him move. Heard the rustle of tissue paper.

"Okay. Open."

In his hands was a scarf. Deep burgundy. Hand-knit. The stitches were tight and even. No mistakes.

I took it slowly. Let the wool slide through my fingers.

There was a card tucked inside. His handwriting.

*For the woman who taught me what home feels like.*

I read it twice. Looked up at his face.

He was watching me with an expression I'd seen a hundred times. Soft. Hopeful. Nervous in the way he always got when he gave me something he'd made himself.

I searched for the lie.

I looked for the performance.

I found something else instead. Something I didn't have a name for. Something that made my chest hurt worse than all the messages and all the cameras and all the months of deception combined.

"Kash."

"You mentioned that color once," he said quietly. "Last fall. Outside that boutique on Madison. You said it was your favorite shade for autumn. I remembered."

I wrapped the scarf around my neck. It was soft. Warm. It smelled faintly like him.

"It's the most beautiful thing anyone's ever made for me."

Both statements were true.

He smiled. Reached out and adjusted the scarf slightly. His fingers brushed my collarbone.

"I wanted you to have something from me," he said. "Something real."

I held his gaze. "Thank you."

He kissed me. Slow and careful. Like he was trying to say something he didn't have words for.

I kissed him back.

When he pulled away, his eyes were bright.

"I love you," he whispered.

I touched his face. Let my thumb trace along his jaw.

"I love you too."

We stayed like that for a long time. His forehead against mine. The scarf warm around my neck.

This was the last tender moment.

I knew it even then.

Tomorrow night, at the gala, in front of everyone who mattered, I would destroy him.

I would destroy Sienna.

I would burn down everything they'd built and salt the earth behind me.

But tonight—for one more night—I let him hold me.

I let him believe I didn't know.

I let him believe we still had a future.

And I wore the scarf he'd made me and pretended my heart wasn't breaking.

---

Later, in bed, he fell asleep with his arm around my waist.

I stared at the ceiling. Felt the weight of him against me. Listened to his breathing even out.

My phone was on the nightstand. Maisie had texted an hour ago.

*Everything's ready. I'll be in position by seven. You good?*

I typed back with one hand, careful not to wake him.

*I'm good.*

She replied immediately.

*Liar. But I love you anyway.*

I set the phone down. Closed my eyes.

The scarf was folded on the chair across the room. Burgundy wool catching the dim light from the window.

Tomorrow night I'd wear it to the gala.

I'd wear the last thing he ever gave me while I ended him.

It felt right somehow.

Poetic.

I turned my face into the pillow and waited for morning.
