Chapter 4

The flight back to Seattle took five hours. I spent most of it with my forehead against the cold window, watching clouds move beneath me like slow, indifferent water.

I had the ruined gown in my carry-on. Still folded in its tissue paper. I don't know why I brought it home. I just couldn't leave it there.

Clara met me at the studio with my father's latest report already printed out. She didn't say anything when she handed it to me. She just watched my face while I read it.

Urgent status. Forty-eight hours to confirm the deposit or lose the slot.

I read the number at the bottom of the page. Then I set it down on the worktable next to my needle and my thread and the half-finished veil border I'd been working on before the commission came in. I looked at all of it for a long moment.

'I'll figure something out,' I said.

Clara didn't argue. She just nodded and went to make tea.

I went to the hospital.

The corridor outside my father's room smelled like antiseptic and floor wax. I sat in one of the plastic chairs along the wall with my sketchbook open in my lap. I'd brought it out of habit—my hands always need something to hold. But the pencil just sat there between my fingers, not moving. I stared at the blank page.

I had no path. That was the thing I kept turning over and couldn't get past. I had gone through every option on the flight home, methodically, the way I approach a complicated piece—start at the edges, work inward. Loans. Clients who might pay early. Selling equipment. None of it added up to the number in time. Not even close.

The pencil still didn't move.

After a while, a nurse came out of my father's room and told me he was awake and asking for me. I closed the sketchbook. I put the pencil in my pocket. I went in.

He looked smaller than I remembered. That was the thing about hospitals—they made everyone look smaller. But his eyes were the same. Warm and steady and completely focused on me the moment I walked through the door.

'There she is,' he said.

I sat in the chair beside his bed and took his hand. His fingers were cool and dry. I held them carefully.

We talked about small things for a while. His physical therapist. The watercolor he'd been planning in his head—a view of the sound at low tide. Whether I was eating enough. I answered everything. I kept my voice even.

Then he said: 'I'd like to see Raylan before the surgery. Just for a few minutes. I want to look at the man who's looking after you.'

He said it simply. No weight behind it. Just a father wanting to see his daughter's person before he went under anesthesia, wanting that particular reassurance.

I looked at his face. The quiet hope in it. The trust.

'I'll see what I can arrange,' I said.

He smiled and patted my hand. 'Good girl.'

I stayed another twenty minutes. I kissed his forehead when I left. I walked out into the corridor and leaned against the wall and closed my eyes and stood there with my back against the cold plaster and my hands flat at my sides.

I had no idea what I was going to do.

The following afternoon I was back in the same corridor, sitting in the same plastic chair with the same motionless pencil, when I heard the elevator.

I looked up.

Magnus Walker came down the hall in a tailored navy suit, carrying a paper bag with the logo of the tea shop two blocks from my studio. He walked like someone who knew exactly where he was going. He stopped in front of me and held out the bag.

'Earl Grey,' he said. 'The good kind. Clara said it's his favorite.'

I stared at him. 'Clara called you.'

'Clara called me.' He said it without apology or explanation, the same way he'd stated the tea. Just a fact. 'I'm here.'

I didn't know what to say. I opened my mouth and nothing came out.

He didn't wait for me to find words. He just looked at the door to my father's room, then back at me, and said: 'May I?'

I nodded.

He knocked once, soft and unhurried, and went in.

I sat in the corridor and listened. I couldn't hear the words, just the rhythm of it—two voices, easy and unhurried, with pauses that meant someone was actually listening. Once I heard my father laugh. A real laugh, not the careful kind he'd been using with me all week.

Forty minutes later, Magnus came back out. He sat down in the chair beside mine and was quiet for a moment. Then he reached over and took my hand—not dramatically, just the way you take someone's hand when they've been holding something heavy for a long time and you want them to know they don't have to hold it alone.

'He showed me a photo of your first embroidery piece,' he said. 'The one you made when you were seven. The lopsided daisy.'

I let out a breath that was almost a laugh.

Magnus squeezed my hand once. 'You don't owe me an explanation,' he said quietly. 'You don't owe me anything.'

I looked down at our hands. His thumb moved once across my knuckles, slow and deliberate, and then was still.

Outside the window at the end of the corridor, the Seattle sky was doing what it always does in November. Pressing down. Grey and close and relentless.

I didn't let go of his hand.
