Chapter 5

Neriah locked the bathroom door and turned on both faucets. White noise, in case anyone was listening in the hall.

She faced the mirror. Studied her own eyes.

"I never wanted to believe it," she whispered. Too flat. She tried again, softer, letting her voice catch on the word believe. Better.

She practiced the pause after it — three seconds, long enough for the silence to do the work, not so long it looked staged. She practiced the tremor in her hands, the way she'd let them shake around the microphone like she couldn't hold it steady. She practiced looking down at her feet, then up again, eyes wet, like she'd forced herself to be brave.

"I just want the truth to come out," she said to the mirror. "That's all I ever wanted."

She held that expression a long moment, checking the angle of her chin, the exact tilt that read as fragile instead of furious.

On the counter, her phone buzzed. She wiped her palms on her sweatpants before picking it up.

Emerson: You still doing gray sweater? Or the blue one

Gray, she typed. Makes me look smaller. More like a victim.

Emerson: And I go up after the second question they take from the floor?

Right after I say her name the second time. That's your cue. Don't jump early.

Emerson: Got it.

She set the phone down and looked at herself one more time. Practiced the tears — she could produce them on command, had been able to since she was twelve, since she learned that crying in front of the right adult at the right moment could rearrange the entire shape of a room.

Tomorrow, she would rearrange an auditorium.

She turned off the faucets and went to lay out the sweater.

I woke before my alarm, the way I always do on days that matter.

The blazer I chose was navy, structured, nothing soft about it. I put on the pearl studs my father gave me at my college graduation — the only jewelry I wore that day, because everything else about me needed to be quiet. Let the truth be the loud part.

At my desk, coffee black, I opened the laptop one final time. Market reports on the second monitor, the way I like them, though I barely glanced at the numbers this morning. I opened the folder instead. Screenshots. Timestamps. The security footage from The Grind, five minutes after my Venmo cleared. The Apple Store receipt beside the bank transfer, forty minutes apart, like two halves of the same sentence.

I didn't feel my pulse pick up. I didn't feel my hands go cold. I reviewed it the way I review anything I've already mastered — checking for gaps, not for courage. The courage had already happened, three weeks ago, in a dark office when I picked up the phone and called my father.

This morning was just execution.

I copied the file to the USB drive and slid it into my breast pocket, over my heart, which struck me as almost funny. I closed the laptop.

The drive to campus took eleven minutes. I didn't turn on the radio.

---

The corridor outside the auditorium smelled like fresh paint and coffee from the reception table someone had set up too early. Faculty in blazers. Students clutching programs. A local news crew adjusting a tripod near the doors, Diane Foster's name printed on her lanyard.

I was almost at the entrance when I saw her.

Maya Chen stood off to the side, arms crossed tight over a cardigan, like she was holding herself together by force. When she saw me, she stepped forward fast, like she'd been waiting.

"Ms. Montgomery."

"Maya." I stopped. "You didn't have to come."

"I wanted to." Her voice was low, fast. "I talked to Iris and the other two. We're all here. If — if it comes to it, if there's a moment—" She stopped herself, glanced over her shoulder like the walls might repeat her. "We want to say something. Publicly. About what she's actually like."

I studied her face. The nervous set of her jaw. The way her hands wouldn't stay still. She wasn't doing this for a show. She was doing it because someone had finally asked, and no one had ever asked before.

"That's very brave of you," I said. And I meant it.

"I'm scared," she admitted. "She's good at making people look crazy for telling the truth."

"I know." I reached out, briefly, and touched her arm. "Wait for the right moment. You'll know when it is."

She nodded, swallowing hard, and stepped back to let me pass.

I didn't look back at her. I didn't need to. I could feel her watching me walk toward the doors, the way you feel someone's faith settle on your shoulders like a hand.

Inside, the auditorium was already half full. Rows of seats climbing toward the back, a stage lit bright under three enormous screens, the university crest glowing blue behind the podium. Somewhere in that crowd, my father was probably already seated, unremarkable in a gray suit, the way he always made himself small in rooms he technically owned.

I found my seat near the front. I smoothed my blazer lapels once, out of habit, not nerves.

The drive sat warm against my chest.

Let her talk. I had the last word, and it was sitting right here, waiting.
