My Blind Eyes Saw Everything

She traded her sight to save her husband, Evander, and spent a year trusting his promise to be her eyes. He never knew her vision had returned. She meant to surprise him with the miracle, but the surprise was hers. In their silent Park Avenue penthouse, a cloying perfume and muffled giggle led her to Evander entwined with his executive secretary, Katia, on their Fendi sofa. Katia's cruel, triumphant gaze met hers, then sent her to fetch "aspirin"—a veiled request for condoms. Evander patted her head and called her his "good girl." Her love turned to ash. Betrayed and treated as an invisible pawn, she retreated and sent an encrypted message: "I'm ready. I can come back anytime." The reply: "Waiting." Chapter 3

Claire POV

The ballroom of The Pierre glittered, a universe of crystal chandeliers and champagne flutes. Evander stood beside me, his hand possessive on the small of my back, playing the adoring husband for New York's high society.

I wore a midnight blue gown, my dark sunglasses a chic, impenetrable mask. I smiled, I nodded, I accepted birthday wishes with a quiet grace everyone mistook for fragility. Inside, I was a block of ice.

Katia was here, of course, in a shimmering gold dress that cost more than a car. She was introduced as Evander's "indispensable executive secretary." She hovered near us, her hand occasionally brushing Evander's arm, her eyes gleaming with smug victory whenever they met my sunglasses.

In the ladies' room, I had overheard her texting: After tonight, everyone will know who the real Mrs. Robertson is.

When Evander tried to take my hand, I let mine go limp. "My hands are cold," I murmured, pulling away to wrap them around my clutch. A small rejection, but it was mine.

The night wore on. Then, the climax. Evander tapped a glass for attention, his voice booming with practiced sincerity.

"I have one more surprise for my beautiful wife," he announced, gesturing toward the grand terrace. "A gift from the sky."

My stomach tightened. He knew I hated drones—had told him once, years ago, that the sound reminded me of a swarm of angry insects. He had remembered. He just didn't care.

He launched into a speech, a masterful performance of love. He spoke of how we met, of my brilliance, of the accident. He even produced a tear as he leaned in to kiss my forehead.

"You are the love of my life, Claire."

I felt nothing. It was like watching an actor in a movie. I tilted my head just enough that his lips brushed my hair instead of my skin.

The lights dimmed. A fleet of drones rose in perfect formation, their lights blinking against the black velvet of the sky.

Katia moved to stand beside Evander, her hand resting proprietarily on his forearm, her face tilted upward in a triumphant smile.

The first word formed by the drones was "CONGRATULATIONS."

A ripple of confusion went through the crowd. Then, the next word.

"KATIA."

A collective gasp. The air crackled with scandalized whispers. I didn't need to see their faces to feel the weight of their pity.

Finally, the drones re-formed into the logo of a Robertson Industries subsidiary.

Evander stepped back to the microphone, his expression calm. "Tonight, we also celebrate a monumental achievement," he announced, his voice smooth as silk. "Katia Lynch has just secured the largest contract in our company's history. I wanted to take this opportunity, among friends, to honor her incredible work."

He had turned my birthday into his secretary's victory party. He hadn't just forgotten me; he had publicly erased me.

He didn't apologize. He didn't even look at me. He took Katia's hand, raised it in a toast, and said, "To success!" Then he led Katia through the stunned crowd and out of the ballroom.

I was left standing alone, the punchline to a cruel joke.

As Katia passed, she leaned in close, her voice a venomous whisper only I could hear. "Happy birthday. And thank you for lending me your husband. And your party."

I stood frozen for a moment longer. Then, in a corner of the terrace, unnoticed, I slowly took off my sunglasses. My vision was perfectly clear. I raised my phone and took a photo of Evander and Katia disappearing through the hotel's main entrance, their hands linked.

The flash was off. They never saw a thing.

But I saw everything. And I was going to make sure the whole world saw it too.
