Chapter 3

I call Marcus on Thursday morning.

Marcus Chen. Paralegal. Third floor. The kind of person who knows how to pull camera footage without leaving a trail of requests that end up in the wrong inbox. I've worked with him on three cases. He owes me nothing. I ask anyway.

'Intersection of Lexington and 53rd,' I say. 'Monday, October 9th, between 6:47 and 6:52 p.m. Traffic cameras, security feeds from the buildings on the northwest and southeast corners. Anything pointed at the street.'

There's a pause. Not long. Just the space it takes for someone to decide whether to ask why.

He doesn't ask.

'Give me two days,' he says.

I give him one.

---

Friday afternoon, Marcus appears at my office door with a thumb drive. He sets it on my desk without a word, meets my eyes for half a second, and leaves. I wait until the hallway is empty. Then I close the door. I pull the blinds. I plug the drive into my laptop.

Four files. Three different angles. Time-stamped.

I open the first one.

The intersection fills the screen. Cars stopped at the light. Pedestrians crossing. Normal. And then—there. Silver sedan, New York plates, approaching from the west. The light is red. It does not slow.

I watch the car accelerate.

I watch it cut across the lane.

I watch it strike a woman stepping off the curb—me, I am watching myself get hit—and I watch the impact lift her body and throw her six feet. The sedan does not stop. It does not swerve. It moves through the intersection like a fist through glass and disappears off-frame.

I play it again.

The driver had a clear line of sight. Fifty yards, maybe more. Daylight. No obstruction. The brake lights never come on.

I play it a third time. A fourth.

On the fifth, I pause the frame just before impact. I zoom in on the windshield. The glare is bad, but I can see the shape of a head, the shadow of hands on the wheel. Deliberate. Controlled.

I save the file to an encrypted folder. I label it Evidence_01. Then I sit back in my chair and press my thumb to my wrist.

Still here.

---

I spend the weekend with phone records.

Not mine. The driver's. It takes three calls—one to a contact at a data recovery firm I've used for discovery, one to a freelance investigator whose rates I can barely afford, one to a friend from law school who now works in telecom compliance and does not ask questions she doesn't want answered.

By Sunday night, I have what I need.

The driver's phone. Burner. Purchased October 2nd at a convenience store on East 78th. Activated the same day. Used exactly four times—three outgoing calls, all to the same number, and one incoming confirmation text.

I run the recipient number.

It comes back unlisted. I run it again through a reverse lookup service. Still nothing.

I sit with that for twenty minutes. Then I pull up Kendall's social media. I scroll back to early October. October 4th—a photo at a café I recognize, the one near her building. October 5th—a gym check-in. October 6th—dinner with friends, tagged location two blocks from the convenience store on East 78th.

I open a map. I drop two pins. Convenience store. Kendall's apartment. The distance between them is 0.3 miles.

I lean back. I breathe.

I remember the dinner. September 28th. Kendall, me, two mutual friends. Someone asked if I was feeling okay. I said I'd been tired. Nauseous in the mornings. I laughed it off. Kendall had smiled and squeezed my hand and said nothing.

Four days later, the burner phone was purchased.

I close the laptop. I walk to the window. I look out at the city—the lights, the traffic, the ordinary machinery of other people's lives continuing without pause.

I press my thumb to my wrist and count to thirty.

---

Monday morning, I go to the precinct.

Detective Ray Okafor meets me in a gray interview room that smells like old coffee and industrial cleaner. He's older than I expected. Tired eyes. He listens while I walk him through the footage, the phone records, the timeline. I hand him printed summaries. I hand him the thumb drive. I do not editorialize. I do not cry.

When I finish, he sits back and folds his hands on the table.

'Ms. Hansen,' he says slowly. 'This is good work. I mean that. But it's circumstantial.'

I wait.

'The footage shows intent. No question. But we don't have the driver. We don't have a direct link between Ms. Carroll and the driver. The phone records put her near the purchase location, but that's not the same as proof she made the purchase. A defense attorney would shred this in prelim.'

I nod. I knew this already. I came anyway.

'What do you need?' I ask.

He exhales. 'A witness. A transaction record with her name on it. A text message. Something direct.'

'And if I find it?'

'Then we move.'

I stand. I thank him. I shake his hand. His grip is firm and brief.

'I'll keep the file open,' he says.

I believe him.

In the elevator, I press my thumb to my wrist. I count to ten. The doors open onto the lobby and I walk out into the cold October air.

Still here. Still moving.
