Chapter 2

Three nights after I knocked Landon unconscious with his mother's wedding gift, I stood beside our bed and watched him sleep.

He was drunk again. The empty scotch bottle on his nightstand told that story clearly enough. His breathing was deep and even, the kind of sleep that came from too much alcohol and a clean conscience. He had no idea what was coming.

I pressed my thumb against the mate mark on my neck. It barely tingled now. The bond that had once burned bright enough to light up a Come of Age Ceremony had faded to something I could almost ignore — except in moments like this, when I needed it to do one last thing for me.

Seraphina stirred in my chest. *Are you certain?*

*No,* I admitted silently. *But I need to know.*

I'd never tried this before. I wasn't even sure it would work. But I'd read about it once, years ago, in an old pack history book Nancy kept in the library — how fated mates could sometimes share thoughts through their marks if the bond was strong enough. Ours wasn't strong anymore. But maybe the remnant was enough.

I knelt beside the bed and pressed my mate mark directly against Landon's temple.

The connection snapped into place like a live wire.

Images flooded my mind — not my memories, his. Kira's face, flushed and laughing. Her jasmine scent so thick it made my stomach turn. The curve of her neck. Her hands in his hair. The hotel room with the curtains drawn. His voice, rough with want: *You're everything she's not.*

I tried to pull away but the memories kept coming, faster now, sharper. His office. Kira perched on his desk. His Beta standing by the door with a tablet, reading aloud: "The Pack Banquet is scheduled for the first Saturday in November. Visiting Alphas from Silverfang, Ashwood, and Clearwater have confirmed attendance."

Landon's voice, steady and cold: "That's when we'll do it. Public rejection. Clean break. I'll have the council paperwork ready."

Kira's smile, slow and satisfied: "And the pup?"

"Yours. Legally. I'll make sure of it."

I yanked my hand away so fast I fell backward onto the floor.

My heart was hammering. My hands were shaking. The mate mark on my neck burned like someone had pressed a brand to it.

Landon didn't stir. He just kept sleeping, peaceful as a man with nothing to hide.

I sat there on the bedroom floor, breathing hard, and felt the last thread of hope I hadn't known I was still holding snap clean in my chest.

He was going to reject me. In front of the entire pack. In front of visiting Alphas. He was going to strip my Luna title and leave me and Ainsley packless. He'd already decided. He'd already made the plan.

I didn't cry.

I got up, walked to the kitchen, and pulled my notepad from behind the loose panel. I opened it to a fresh page and began to write.

The gas station was twenty minutes outside Stormridge territory, far enough that no pack wolf would smell me there. I bought the burner phone with cash and activated it in the parking lot. Then I sent a single text to a number I'd memorized nine years ago and never used.

*Lavender still blooms in September.*

It meant nothing to anyone else. To Brinley Stewart, it meant everything.

I drove home, destroyed the phone, and waited.

Two days later, a woman with short dark hair and a professional smile showed up at the pack house with a leather portfolio and immaculate human credentials. She introduced herself to Nancy as a private tutor specializing in advanced curriculum for gifted children. Her references were impeccable. Her background check was spotless. Her scent was so thoroughly masked with human-world products that she read as barely-wolf to anyone who wasn't paying close attention.

Nancy hired her on the spot.

Ainsley met Brinley that afternoon in the library. I stood in the doorway and watched my daughter tilt her head, studying this new stranger with the serious focus she usually reserved for puzzles.

"You smell different," Ainsley said finally.

"Different how?" Brinley asked, crouching down to Ainsley's eye level.

"Like someone who tells the truth."

Brinley's mouth twitched. "That's a very specific skill to smell."

"Mama says I have good instincts."

"Your mama is right."

Ainsley beamed and pulled out her books. Brinley glanced up at me over my daughter's head, and I saw the flicker of recognition in her eyes. She remembered me. Of course she did. I'd hidden her in a New York City shelter when she was fourteen and running from a kill order. I'd asked for nothing. She'd never forgotten.

Now she was here. And she was ready.

That night, after Ainsley was asleep and Landon was passed out in our bedroom, I met Brinley in the small guest cottage at the edge of the property. She was sitting on the couch with her legs tucked under her, scrolling through something on a tablet.

"Nice setup," she said without looking up. "Your mother-in-law really does not pay attention to anything below her sight line, does she?"

"She thinks you're harmless."

"I am harmless." Brinley set the tablet aside and looked at me. "Right up until I'm not."

I sat down across from her and told her everything. The bathroom assault. The Alpha tone. Seraphina's reawakening. The property transfer. The mind-link interception and what I'd seen in Landon's memories — Kira, the plan, the Banquet rejection.

Brinley listened without interrupting. When I finished, she was quiet for a long moment.

"So," she said finally, "we're dismantling an Alpha, his mother, and his mistress from inside their own pack house." She smiled, sharp and cold. "I've had slower Tuesdays."

I felt something loosen in my chest. Relief, maybe. Or just the simple, overwhelming comfort of not being alone anymore.

"I need intelligence," I said. "Recordings. Evidence. Anything that proves Nancy and Kira are conspiring, anything that shows Landon's planning this rejection. I need it airtight."

"You'll have it." Brinley leaned forward. "But Taylor — if we're doing this, we're doing it all the way. No half measures. No mercy. Are you ready for that?"

I thought about Landon's voice in those memories. *You're everything she's not.* I thought about Ainsley sleeping upstairs, about the mate mark on my neck that barely existed anymore, about seven years of making myself smaller so he could feel bigger.

"Yes," I said. "I'm ready."

Brinley nodded once. "Good. Then let's burn it all down."
