My Alpha Starved Me for His Mistress

Every Tuesday, she pulls her threadbare jacket tight and walks Blackridge's edge beside Tommy, a low-ranked wolf, clutching a list of flour, salt, and dried beans. For three years, Dexter claimed Silvercrest's vaults held nothing, so she measured every gram and named the hunger love. Then the truth sinks its claws in: while she wastes away, his mistress grows fat on the pack's gold. A werewolf romance built on lies and starvation, where the mate bond strains toward breaking—and the Alpha's betrayal bites deeper than any fang.

Chapter 4

The Council vote should have hollowed me out. Instead, by the time I reached the kitchen wing that evening, all I felt was a low, simmering heat under my ribs, like coals that hadn't gone out no matter how much cold water Marcus Vale had poured on them.

I heard it before I saw it. A voice, sharp and pleased with itself, echoing off the stone.

"Again. I said again."

Elsie stood in the middle of the kitchen, arms crossed, watching a small figure scrub the floor on her hands and knees. Rosie. I recognized her from the Luna's chair the day I'd sent Elsie packing — the girl with the wide brown eyes who'd fled with her bucket.

She wasn't fleeing now. She couldn't. Her knees were pressed into the stone, and even from the doorway I could see the dark smear trailing behind her, thin and red, staining the grout where she'd scrubbed the same six inches over and over.

Four other staff wolves stood pressed against the far wall, eyes down, hands folded. Paralyzed. I knew that stillness. I'd worn it myself for three years.

"You missed a spot," Elsie said, voice dripping with the smug authority of someone who'd never once earned it. "Do it again, or I'll tell Dexter you're being difficult."

Rosie's shoulders shook. She dipped the brush back into the pail without a word.

Something in me went very quiet and very cold.

"Get up, Rosie."

Every head in the room turned. Elsie's mouth curled the second she saw me. "Oh, look who's decided to grace the kitchen. Shouldn't you be licking your wounds after Marcus handed you your defeat?"

"I said get up." I kept my eyes on Rosie. "Now."

Rosie hesitated, glancing at Elsie like she needed permission to obey her own rescue. That hesitation told me everything about how deep the rot went.

Elsie stepped between us, chin lifted. "She works for me. Dexter put me in charge of household staff. You have no authority here."

"Dexter," I said slowly, "has no authority here. Not anymore. And you never did."

"You think a piece of paper changes anything? You think anyone actually believes you're some long-lost bloodline heir?" She laughed, but it cracked at the edges. "You're a joke, Luciana. A starved, barren joke that Dexter kept out of pity."

The coals under my ribs caught.

I didn't decide to let it out. It simply happened — a pulse of something ancient and furious rolling off me in a wave, filling the kitchen floor to ceiling. The temperature seemed to drop. The pans on their hooks rattled faintly. Every wolf in that room — Elsie included — staggered like the air itself had shoved them.

Elsie's knees buckled. She caught herself on the counter, face bloodless, eyes wide with something I hadn't seen from her before.

Fear.

Good.

"Get out of this kitchen," I said, and my voice didn't need to be loud. It carried anyway, low and absolute. "You will not touch another member of this pack again."

She didn't argue this time. She ran, heels clattering against stone, and didn't look back.

I crossed the room and knelt in front of Rosie. Up close, her hands were worse than I'd thought — raw, split at the knuckles, trembling. I took them gently in mine.

"You don't have to do this anymore," I said. "Not for her. Not for anyone."

Rosie's eyes filled, but she didn't cry. She just nodded, small and disbelieving, like she was waiting for the ground to open up and swallow this moment before it could be real.

I helped her to her feet myself.

"No one in this pack," I said, loud enough for the staff pressed against the wall to hear, "will be treated this way under my watch. Ever again."

No one spoke. But I saw something shift in their faces. Not fear this time. Something closer to hope, fragile and unpracticed.

---

That night, they came to me one at a time.

The first was an older Omega named Della, who knocked so softly I almost missed it, and whispered about payments that used to leave the treasury every month, routed somewhere no one dared ask about. The second was a young delta's mate, eyes darting toward the hallway the whole time, who told me about a locked room in the basement that no one but Dexter and Marcus ever entered. The third didn't even give her name. She just pressed a folded scrap of paper into my palm and disappeared before I could thank her.

Three years of silence, breaking apart in a single evening.

I didn't sleep. I sat at my mother's old desk transcribing every fragment, every trembling half-memory, until the sky outside started to gray.

I didn't know yet that somewhere across the territory line, in an office lit only by monitor glow, Ridge was doing the same thing — tracing wire transfers back through shell accounts, until the trail led him to an encrypted drive Rosie Baker had been building in secret for months, alone, terrified, and unwilling to stop.
