Chapter 4

The announcement came at the morning pack gathering.

Camden stood on the raised platform in the great hall, Veronica beside him with one hand resting on her belly. His parents flanked them like bookends—his father with his arms crossed, his mother with her hands folded precisely at her waist. The entire pack was assembled below. Warriors. Deltas. Kitchen staff. Elders. Even the children, wide-eyed and restless near the back.

I stood near the servants' entrance with the other Omegas. Gray tunic. Hands folded. Eyes forward.

Camden's voice carried easily across the hall. Steady. Authoritative. The voice of an Alpha who'd never had to raise it to be heard.

"This afternoon," he said, "we'll hold a discipline session in the training yard. A demonstration of pack order for our younger wolves. It's important that everyone understands how hierarchy functions. How authority is maintained."

His eyes found mine across the hall. Brief. Deliberate. Then they moved on.

Veronica smiled. Not at me. At the pack. The smile of a woman who'd already won and was simply enjoying the view.

Camden's father nodded once, approving. His mother's hands stayed perfectly still.

The gathering dismissed. Wolves filed out in clusters, murmuring to each other. I stayed where I was until the hall emptied. Then I went back to the kitchen and scrubbed the breakfast dishes until my hands were raw.

---

By noon, the entire pack had gathered in the training yard.

It was a clear day. Cold. The kind of winter sunlight that made everything look sharper than it was. The yard was a wide circle of packed dirt surrounded by wooden posts and a low stone wall. Normally it was used for sparring drills and shift practice. Today it felt like an arena.

Camden stood at the center. His parents on the raised platform to the east. Veronica beside them, one hand still on her belly, the other resting lightly on the railing. She wore pale blue—the color she'd worn the night of the rejection. I wondered if that was deliberate.

The pack formed a loose ring around the perimeter. Warriors in front. Families behind. Children held on shoulders so they could see. Three hundred wolves, silent and waiting.

A Delta I didn't recognize called my name.

"Omega Layla. Center of the yard."

I walked forward. The dirt was cold under my feet. I'd left my shoes in the basement—Omegas didn't wear shoes in the training yard. It was one of those unwritten rules no one had needed to tell me.

I stopped in the center and stood with my hands at my sides. I did not look at the ground. I looked at Camden.

He stepped closer. Close enough that I could see the scar on his flank where his Beta's claws had dragged. It hadn't healed cleanly. The fur grew in patchy and thin, and when he moved I could see the muscle beneath pull wrong.

He didn't look tired. He looked composed. In control. The Alpha who'd rejected his fated mate and installed a chosen one and was now demonstrating to his pack that the decision had been correct. That order had been restored.

He spoke loud enough for every wolf to hear.

"Kneel."

The Alpha tone hit like a hammer.

It wasn't the light pressure of a routine command. It was the full, crushing weight of his dominance—the biological imperative that made every wolf in the pack instinctively submit, that turned disobedience into physical agony. It wrapped around my bones and pulled.

My knees wanted to buckle. My wolf snarled inside me, furious and trapped, clawing at the command like a cage. The pressure bore down on my spine, my shoulders, my legs. My body began to bow.

I locked my jaw. I tried to stay standing.

The pressure increased. My knees bent. The dirt rose toward me. I could hear my own breathing, harsh and uneven. I could feel every wolf in the yard watching.

Veronica leaned forward slightly on the railing, her eyes bright.

Camden's father nodded, satisfied.

My knees touched the dirt.

And then something inside me refused.

It wasn't a decision. It was deeper than thought—a certainty that rose from some part of me I'd never heard speak this clearly before. The warmth I'd felt in the basement three nights ago, the coal buried under ash, flared.

My wolf stopped snarling. She went very still. Then she surged.

Heat flooded my veins like liquid silver. My bones began to crack—not in submission, but in transformation. Not the familiar shift I'd known for years, the small brown wolf that had always been unremarkable and late-blooming and easy to overlook.

This was something else.

The Alpha tone shattered against it like glass against stone.

Silver light split my skin. I felt my spine elongate, my ribs expand, my shoulders broaden in a way that had nothing to do with the wolf I'd always been. The pressure that had been crushing me snapped and inverted—suddenly I was the weight, and everything else was air.

The crack of bone became a roar. Not pain. Power.

I rose.

My wolf erupted upward in a blaze of silver light, massive and gleaming, twice Camden's size. Fur like concentrated moonlight. Eyes that burned with something older than pack law, older than Alpha tone, older than anything Camden had ever tried to command.

The air flooded with a scent I'd never smelled before—winter jasmine and silver pine underscored by something ancient and unmistakable. Royal.

Every wolf in the yard dropped.

Not a choice. Instinct. The kind of submission that came from blood, not rank. Warriors hit the dirt on their bellies. Deltas pressed their foreheads to the ground. Even the children went still and quiet, their small bodies flattening in involuntary reverence.

Camden staggered backward. His eyes were wide. His mouth opened but no sound came out. The scar on his flank split—fresh blood soaking through the fur.

On the platform, Veronica's hand slipped from the railing. She dropped to her knees, her face white, her lips parted in shock.

Camden's father tried to stay standing. His knees buckled. He caught himself on the railing, his knuckles white, his face twisted in disbelief.

Camden's mother was already down. Forehead to the wood. Hands flat. Perfectly still.

I stood in the center of the training yard in my true form—the form that had been sleeping beneath wolfsbane and ignorance and three years of believing I was nothing more than a packless she-wolf who'd gotten lucky.

My wolf's voice filled my mind. Clear. Certain. Unshakeable.

*We are not what he said we were.*

The silver light blazed brighter.

And the world held its breath.
