Chapter 4

I sent the tip at midnight.

Not through the ghost channel. Not through anything that could be traced back to a mind-link node inside the infirmary walls. I used a different thread entirely—a secondary frequency I had woven into Elliot's smuggling network two years ago, a dormant wire buried so deep in the pack's communication infrastructure that even I sometimes forgot it was there.

I had spent the last three days collecting the data. Dates. Coordinates. Survey markers. Every unsanctioned encroachment Hudson had made into the neutral buffer zones along the northern and eastern borders, documented in the same meticulous handwriting I had used to build every contract, every alliance, every logistical record this pack had ever produced. I knew the territory better than Hudson did. I had mapped it myself.

I transmitted the account in fragments, clean and precise, stripped of anything that could identify me. No name. No wolf signature. No emotional static. Just facts, laid out with the same cold efficiency of a legal brief.

Then I set my tea vial on the bedside cabinet and waited.

My wolf stirred faintly in the back of my mind. She was still weak, still curled close, but her breathing had steadied over the last two days. She pressed her nose against the inside of my ribs and exhaled.

*Good,* she murmured.

I pressed my palm flat over my stomach and closed my eyes.

*Now we wait for him to panic.*

---

The Council notice arrived on a Tuesday.

I knew the moment it hit the packhouse. I felt it in the air—a shift, the way a storm changes the pressure in a room before the first crack of thunder. Then I heard Hudson's voice from two corridors away, sharp and clipped in a way he never allowed himself in public, and I knew.

Cora came in twenty minutes later. She didn't say anything. She just set down my breakfast tray and let her eyes flick once to the window, then back to me.

I raised an eyebrow.

"Three senior enforcers," she said quietly, her voice barely above a breath. "Led by Prince Damian's Beta. A territorial compliance audit. Five days." She paused. "He's furious."

I nodded once and picked up my spoon.

Five days. Which meant they were already moving. Which meant Hudson was already calculating.

My ancestral territory claim was still legally tied to my Luna title—a title I had not yet signed away, because the demotion papers were still sitting unsigned in a folder on Hudson's desk. As long as I held the title, the Council audit could freeze every territorial transfer Hudson had been quietly orchestrating for months. His entire scheme—the silver-ash, the demotion, the land grab—would be exposed before he could finalize a single piece of it.

He needed my wolf dead before Marcus crossed the border.

I ate my oatmeal slowly and did the math.

Four days.

---

Harlow came that afternoon.

I smelled her before the door opened. Same as always—Hudson's mating scent layered over her skin in thick, deliberate waves, the olfactory equivalent of a flag planted in someone else's soil. But today there was something underneath it. Something sharp and chemical that made the back of my throat tighten.

Silver-ash. Clinging to her fingertips like a residue she hadn't bothered to wash off.

She had come straight from the preparation.

She settled into the chair beside my bed with that same careful, performed grace, and set something on the bedside cabinet. A framed photograph. She positioned it with both hands, adjusting the angle with the focused attention of someone hanging art in a gallery they had just claimed.

I looked at it.

Hudson and Harlow, seated at the Alpha's ceremonial table. My table. The one I had spent three weekends refinishing by hand, stripping the old lacquer down to bare wood and rebuilding it layer by patient layer until the grain ran like dark water under the light.

"I thought you'd like to see it," Harlow said softly. Her voice was warm and sweet and absolutely merciless. "He carried me over the threshold himself. The Luna suite is just beautiful, Morgan. I've already started rearranging things." She tilted her head. "My scent is in the pillows now. The ranked she-wolves have been so welcoming. They've started calling me Luna Harlow."

My wolf hit the walls of my mind like a battering ram.

The tremor moved through my hands before I could stop it—a single, visible shudder, there and gone in a breath.

Harlow saw it. Her smile widened, slow and satisfied, the smile of someone who had just confirmed exactly what they came to confirm.

I breathed in through my nose.

Cedar pine. Packhouse stone. The sharp, unmistakable chemical bite of silver-ash still coating the pads of her fingers, fresh enough that she must have handled the preparation less than an hour ago.

I filed it away. The scent. The timing. The residue on her hands.

My wolf pressed close against my ribs, her rage a white-hot coal at the center of my chest. But her breathing was controlled now. Deliberate.

*Three days,* she said quietly.

I kept my face still and soft and utterly empty, and let Harlow talk.
