Chapter 5

Wesley couldn't sleep.

I didn't know this yet—not directly—but I felt it anyway. A restlessness that shouldn't have been mine, transmitted through channels that no longer existed. The bond was severed. The mark was ash. There was no reason I should feel anything from him at all.

But I did.

It started three nights after I left. A low hum at the base of my skull, like static. Not painful. Just present. I ignored it at first. Then it grew louder. By the fourth night, I could almost hear his breathing—ragged, uneven, the rhythm of someone who hadn't slept in days.

I told myself it was my imagination.

I told myself that right up until Damon walked into the kitchen at two in the morning and found me standing at the window, staring at nothing, my hand pressed flat against the glass.

"You're hearing him," he said.

I didn't answer.

"Aileen."

"I shouldn't be able to," I said quietly. "The bond's gone."

"The bond is," Damon agreed. "But something else isn't."

I turned to look at him. He was leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching me with that particular stillness he had when he was deciding whether to say something.

"What do you mean?"

"Pack-ambient channels," he said. "You're picking them up. Ironridge frequencies you shouldn't be able to reach anymore."

I looked back out the window. The safe house was surrounded by Silvercrest territory now—Damon had moved us two days ago, closer to the compound. There were patrols every hour. I could hear them shifting in the distance, their wolves moving through the trees.

But underneath that, faint and wrong, I could hear something else.

Ironridge.

Wesley's voice, low and sharp, giving orders to Caden. The healer's quiet murmur as she checked inventory. The sound of boots on hardwood—Wesley's study, I realized with a jolt. He was in his study, pacing.

And then I heard him stop.

The silence that followed was so complete I held my breath without meaning to.

"He's in the nursery," I whispered.

Damon straightened. "How do you know?"

I didn't answer. I just listened.

Wesley was standing in the empty room. I couldn't see him, but I knew. I knew the way he was breathing—shallow, controlled, like he was trying not to make a sound. I knew he was holding something. A blanket, maybe. Or nothing at all.

And then the scent hit him.

I felt it through the static—a spike so violent it made my own chest tighten. Floral. Silver-cold. Mine. The phantom scent he'd been chasing for days, suddenly so strong he staggered.

I heard the wall creak as he braced against it.

I heard Caden's footsteps in the hallway, hesitant, then retreating.

I heard Wesley's breath hitch once, sharp and involuntary, before he forced it smooth again.

Then the static cut out.

I was alone in my own head again, standing at the window with my hand pressed to the glass, my heart pounding for reasons I couldn't explain.

Damon was watching me.

"What did you hear?" he asked quietly.

"He's breaking," I said.

Damon didn't disagree.

We stood there in silence for a long moment. Then he said, "There's something else you need to know."

I turned.

He pulled out his phone and opened a message. "The Luna Ceremony is in two days. Skye's being formalized."

I nodded slowly. I'd expected that.

"If she's named Luna," Damon continued, "Wesley gains legal standing under pack law to claim your daughter as Ironridge property. Heir to the Alpha line. He can file for custody through the council."

The words landed like a physical blow.

I looked toward the bedroom where my daughter slept. The door was open just enough that I could see the edge of the crib, the pale green sheet, the mobile turning slowly in the draft.

"He won't get her," I said.

Damon's expression didn't change. "No. He won't."

"How do we stop it?"

"You show up," he said simply. "At the ceremony. In front of the assembled packs. And you make it very clear that she's not Ironridge property. She's Silvercrest."

I stared at him. "I can't shift. My wolf's been silent since the rejection."

"I know."

"Then what am I supposed to do? Walk in and ask nicely?"

Damon's mouth twitched. Almost a smile. "No. You walk in and let them see what you are."

I didn't understand. Not yet.

But I nodded anyway.

"I'll take you," he said. "We leave tomorrow night."

I pressed my thumb against my neck. The habit was still there, automatic. But this time, when I felt the bare skin, something else stirred underneath.

A deep ache. A pressure building.

I lowered my hand and looked at Damon.

"There's more," he said.

I waited.

He pulled a tablet from the counter and set it in front of me. The screen showed documents—medical records, dated and signed. I recognized the Ironridge pack healer's seal at the top.

"What is this?"

"Fertility assessments," Damon said quietly. "Requested by Wesley. Three weeks before your mating ceremony."

I looked at the dates. Then at the signatures.

Wesley's name was at the bottom of every page.

I read the first document in full. Then the second. Then the third.

They were clinical. Thorough. Evaluating my reproductive capacity like I was livestock. Hormone levels. Ovulation cycles. Genetic markers for viable offspring.

There was a notation at the end of the third assessment: *Suitable for Alpha-line succession. Recommend proceeding with bond formalization.*

I set the tablet down very carefully.

Damon was watching me.

"He evaluated you," Damon said. "Before he ever accepted the bond. Before the ceremony. Before any of it."

"I know."

"This isn't just betrayal, Aileen. This is premeditation."

I nodded slowly.

My hands were steady. That surprised me. I thought they would shake. I thought I would feel something—rage, grief, something sharp and immediate.

But I didn't.

I just felt cold.

I pressed my thumb against my neck one last time. Felt the bare skin. The empty mark.

Then I lowered my hand deliberately and placed it flat on the counter.

I didn't raise it again.

"What can the Lycan Council do with this?" I asked.

Damon's expression shifted. Something like satisfaction.

"Everything," he said. "If it's presented at a Tribunal—with the right witnesses, the right timing—this becomes evidence of bond exploitation. Premeditated use of a fated mate for reproductive purposes. It's grounds for pack dissolution."

"Dissolution."

"Complete. Territory, rank, warriors—all of it stripped. Wesley would be packless."

I looked at the documents again. At Wesley's signature. At the dates.

At the careful, clinical language that reduced three years of my life to a breeding contract.

"When?" I asked.

"The ceremony," Damon said. "Our father will be there. The Alphas will be assembled. If you're willing to present this in front of them—"

"I am."

Damon nodded once. "Then we prepare."

He gathered the documents and slid them into a sealed file. I watched him work—efficient, methodical, the warrior's precision applied to something that wasn't combat but felt close.

When he was done, he looked at me.

"You should rest," he said. "Tomorrow's going to be long."

I nodded.

But I didn't move.

I stood there in the kitchen, my hand flat on the counter, the ache in my ribs deepening with every breath.

Something was coming.

Something silver and cold and waiting.

And when the Luna Ceremony began—when Skye stood in front of the assembled packs and reached for the title that was never hers—I would be there.

Not as the broken Luna who fled in the dark.

As something else entirely.

Damon turned off the kitchen light and left the room.

I stayed where I was, listening to my daughter's breathing through the open door, counting the seconds until the static returned.

It didn't.

Wesley's voice was gone.

But somewhere in the Ironridge pack house, I knew he was standing in that nursery again, holding nothing, choking on a scent that wasn't there.

And the phantom was only going to get worse.
