Chapter 2

Damon called me back at three.

My daughter was asleep against my chest, one tiny fist curled under her chin. I had the burner phone propped against my shoulder and a hospital pen in my hand. The paper was a sheet of plain printer stock I'd taken from the nurse's station. I had no Luna stationery anymore. I didn't want any.

"Are you ready?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Write what I say. Word for word. Don't change anything, even if it feels wrong in your mouth. Pack Law doesn't bend for grief."

"Okay."

His voice was steady. Not gentle—he wasn't trying to soothe me. He was treating this like a mission briefing, and that was exactly what I needed. Gentleness would have broken me. Precision held me together.

"I, Aileen," he started, "former Luna of the Ironridge Pack, do hereby invoke Pack Law Article Seven, Section Three—"

I wrote.

My hand shook on the first line. He waited without comment until it steadied. Then he kept going.

The declaration was longer than I expected. It named everything. The mate bond severed by formal vow on the date and hour. The mark burned to ash. The Luna title surrendered. The pack ties dissolved by my own will, in writing, witnessed by the Moon Goddess and the Lycan Council and any wolf whose blood could read the words.

When I got to the line about renouncing all claim to Ironridge territory and assets, I paused.

"Damon."

"Yes."

"He'll think I gave up."

"Let him think that." A beat. "For now."

I wrote the line.

We finished at three-forty. I read the whole thing back to him in a whisper, careful not to wake my daughter. He listened to every word. When I was done, he said, "That's it. That's the whole document. Sign it at the bottom, full name, and date it. Then it's done."

I signed.

"Aileen," he said.

"Yes."

"You did that perfectly."

I didn't answer. I couldn't. I pressed my thumb to the place on my neck where the mark used to be, and the skin was smooth and cold and empty, and I didn't cry then either. I was saving it. I didn't know what for.

"Two hours," he said. "Be at the coordinates. I'll be in a black SUV. Don't bring anything you can't carry one-handed."

"I won't."

He hung up.

I moved.

I wrapped my daughter against my chest with one of the hospital blankets, tied in a sling the way the night nurse had shown me. She didn't stir. I stood up slowly, breathing through the pull in my abdomen, and walked out of the recovery room in my socks.

The pack house was quiet. White roses had already started arriving for the ceremony—I could smell them from the entry hall. I didn't look.

Wesley's study was on the second floor.

I hadn't been inside it in weeks. He kept it locked. But the key was where it had always been, in the top drawer of the hall console, and he had never thought to move it because he had never thought I would use it.

I opened the door.

The room smelled like him—leather, cedar, the cologne he wore for council meetings. My wolf would have stirred at that scent a week ago. There was nothing in me now. Just the small weight of my daughter against my sternum, and the small weight of the ring on my finger.

I placed the declaration on the center of his desk.

Then I worked the Luna ring off my hand. It came off easier than I expected. Three years of wearing it, and it slid free like it had been waiting.

I dropped it on the floor.

The sound was very small. A single clean tap against the hardwood. I listened to it the way I had listened to his footsteps three nights ago—out of habit, out of a body that hadn't yet caught up to what was happening.

Then I tucked the pressed flower into the cover of the declaration.

It was from the first pack garden I ever tended as Luna. Pale blue, dried flat between the pages of a book I no longer owned. I had kept it for sentimental reasons I could no longer remember. I let it stay there now, against the paper, where Wesley would find it and not understand.

I walked out.

I did not look at the nursery. I had already taken what I needed from it: the child against my chest. The rest was paint and furniture and a crib that had been chosen for someone Wesley intended to keep.

The pack house door was unlocked. They never locked it. Wesley liked the symbol of an open house, an Alpha unafraid.

I stepped into the dark.

The air outside was cold and clean and smelled like nothing I recognized. My daughter made one small sound against my collarbone and settled again. I walked across the lawn in my socks, past the rose deliveries stacked at the side gate, and out toward the tree line where Damon would be waiting.

I did not look back.

I did not look back the next morning either, when—I learned this later, from witnesses—Wesley returned to the pack house expecting to find a broken mate he could manage into silence, and instead found a ring on the floor of his study, a severance declaration on his desk, and a nursery so empty it echoed.

The healer told me his wolf moved before he did. A lurch, she said. An involuntary sound from his throat that he couldn't suppress. He sent Caden and the warriors out within the hour.

The extraction was clean. They found nothing.

And somewhere around mid-afternoon, standing in the empty nursery with my daughter's blanket in his hand, Wesley caught the first trace of a scent that wasn't there.

Floral. Silver-cold. Rising out of nowhere.

Mine.

He would spend the rest of his life trying to follow it.
