Chapter 3

"On your knees."

The words dropped into the room like a stone into still water, and I felt them before I understood them — a pressure behind my sternum, a hand made of sound pushing down on every vertebra in my spine. Sterling still hadn't looked at my face. He was looking at the mess. At the green-black mist curling off the marble. At the inconvenience of me.

"Pick it up. Every piece. By hand."

My wolf came up howling.

She hit the inside of my ribs so hard I nearly staggered, a decade of silence breaking all at once, claws raking against a cage I'd built with ten years of suppressants and worse. *No.* Not a word so much as a feeling, ancient and absolute. *Not for him. Never again for him.* But Alpha-tone doesn't ask permission from the parts of you that want to refuse. It goes straight to the parts that were built to obey, the ones under thought, under pride, under everything I'd told myself I'd become. My knees hit the marble before I decided to let them.

The first shard bit into my right palm before I even reached for it, a thin bright line of pain that bloomed instantly into something worse — wolfsbane meeting broken skin, chemical fire threading up through the tendons of my wrist. I picked it up anyway. Set it on my tray. Reached for the second.

Blood mixed with residue, black-green rivering into my palm's creases. I thought of the tin of receipts on my kitchen shelf. I thought of June counting her breaths under her blanket, one, two, three, the way she taught herself because no one taught her anything else that mattered. I did not stop.

Across the room, someone made a small, strangled sound of sympathy — quickly swallowed. I didn't look up, but I felt where it came from. Young. Uncertain. A newly ranked enforcer standing too straight by the door, the kind of stance you hold when you're still new enough to think posture might protect you.

Sterling's head turned. I felt the shift of his attention leave me for one breath of mercy and land on the enforcer instead.

"Something to say, Reed?"

No Alpha-tone this time. He didn't need it. Just the weight of his gaze was enough. The young man's throat worked once, and then his chin lifted, baring his neck in pure reflex, wolf submitting faster than his mind could catch up. "No, Alpha," he said, low, and looked at the wall instead of at me.

I understood. I didn't blame him. Looking costs something in rooms like this one. I'd learned that lesson with my whole body a decade ago.

The only sound left was crystal scraping marble, my own breath going in and out in a careful, even count, and somewhere beneath it, the wet click of Khloe's smile. I felt it without seeing it — the particular satisfaction of a woman watching a thing she'd built go exactly to plan. She lifted her glass an inch, like a toast to no one.

The fumes were thickening in the sealed room, green-black and cloying, and something under my collarbone that had nothing to do with pain in my hands began to slip. The suppressant patch at the base of my neck — steady for ten years, tested against banquets and bonfires and every accidental brush of Sterling's aura — started to burn from the inside, chemical and mark-scar fighting each other for the same nerve.

I pressed another shard onto the tray. My hand was shaking now. Not from fear. From holding two fires at once.

Then the door came apart.

It didn't creak, didn't groan a warning — it simply cracked down the center under a single kick, reinforced wood splitting like it was nothing, hinges tearing loose from a frame built to survive far worse than one man's boot. Every enforcer in the room dropped to a knee at once, involuntary, a wave of pressure rolling through the space that wasn't loud, wasn't announced, was simply *true* in a way Alpha-tone had never managed to be. It didn't ask for obedience. It assumed it, the way gravity assumes a body will fall.

I knew that pressure. Some buried, unnameable part of me had been waiting ten years to feel it again and hadn't known it until now.

Aiden Thorne stepped through the broken frame in plain dark clothes, no crest, no title stitched anywhere visible, and none of it mattered. His eyes swept the room once — fast, total — and stopped on me. On my knees. On my hands, bleeding, wolfsbane crystal still caught between my fingers.

Something cracked open behind his composure. I saw it for exactly one second — ten years of something banked and controlled breaking the surface, raw and furious and old — before he sealed it shut again like a door closing on a room full of fire.

He didn't look at Khloe. He didn't look at the enforcers kneeling on the floor around him.

He looked at Sterling, and said his name like a verdict.

"Sterling."
