Chapter 5

The cemetery was small and sat at the lowest edge of pack territory, where the ground stayed soft year-round and the grass grew longer than anywhere else because no one came to cut it. I had planted a single grey stone there myself, three years ago, over three days when my hands would not stop shaking. I had carved the notation with a borrowed blade. No name — Donovan had refused to let me give the pup a name — just a date, and a small crescent moon I had pressed into the stone with my thumb before the mortar dried.

I had not been back since. I had not needed to come back. I had carried the stone in my chest instead.

My knees were still moving. I could feel the compulsion like a fist wrapped around my spine, not painful exactly, just absolute — a direction that my body had decided was the only direction, and my mind clawing at the walls of it and finding nothing to hold. The pack moved behind us in a long line, two hundred pairs of feet on the cold grass, and nobody spoke. The moon was high and white and it lit the stones ahead in a way that made them look smaller than I remembered.

I saw it before Donovan stopped walking. The flat grey stone, half-sunk into the ground now, the carved crescent still visible. My chest did something I did not have a word for.

Donovan turned to face the assembled pack. He did not look at me.

"Ten years," he said. His voice carried the way Alpha voices always did — not loud, just inescapable, filling the cold air without effort. "Ten years I kept faith with a bond the Moon Goddess placed on me before I was ready. Ten years I waited for a mate who could stand beside me." He paused. "She could not even carry a pup to term."

My knees hit the ground. The compulsion, or my own legs giving out — I could not tell the difference anymore.

"The pup's death was a mercy," he said. Flat. Instructive. The same voice he had used in his study when he told me about Kayla's nursemaid. "Ironveil deserves an heir with strength in its blood. Kayla will give us that. This —" he gestured at the stone without looking at it, the way you gesture at something left in a doorway that needs to be moved — "is old grief. It has no place in what Ironveil is becoming."

I heard someone in the pack draw a sharp breath. I heard it, and I filed it away in the part of me that still kept count, because there was a sound in it I recognized — not agreement. Not the silence of people who had already decided. The silence of people watching something happen that they did not know how to stop.

Donovan raised his boot.

I screamed before it landed. The sound came out of me from somewhere below language, below grief, below everything I had spent ten years pressing down into the quiet place where I kept the things that could not be said. It was not a human sound. It did not feel like mine.

His boot came down.

The stone cracked in half. Clean, down the center. The crescent moon split between the two pieces.

"Burn it," he said.

The ground moved.

Not a tremor. Not the shudder of something settling. The earth beneath my knees lurched, a deep rolling pressure moving outward from the exact point where my hands had pressed into the grass, and I felt it travel up through my palms and into my arms and my chest and something inside me answered it — something that had been pressing against my ribs for four days, patient, waiting, standing against the wall — and the wall came down.

My vision went white. Then silver. Then a color I had no name for, older than any color I had ever seen behind my eyes.

I heard my own bones. I had never heard them before. They were loud.

The pain was enormous and it was also not pain — it was pressure releasing, it was a door that had been sealed for three years blowing open from the inside, it was every suppressed thing in my blood finding its shape all at once. Fur came through my skin like heat. My hands hit the ground and they were not my hands.

The compulsion was gone. I did not break it. It simply ceased, the way a sound ceases when the thing making it no longer exists.

I heard Donovan stumble. I heard his feet on the grass, two quick steps backward, and then I heard the sound his wolf made inside him — not a growl, not a warning, not anything with dominance in it. A whimper. Small and involuntary and very afraid.

Around me, the pack was moving back. I could feel them the way you feel weather — not see it, feel it, the pressure of two hundred wolves stepping away from something their blood recognized before their minds did.

I raised my head.

The silver light was coming from me.
