# Chapter 1: The Eve of Betrayal

## The Summit Crisis

The hotel ballroom buzzed with restless energy as Nexus Pack warriors paced like caged animals. Three days before the Grand Alpha Summit in Seattle, and our Alpha had vanished.

"Collins! Where the hell is he?" Delta Marcus slammed his fist against the table, scattering the tactical maps I'd spent hours preparing.

I straightened my spine, channeling the authority I'd inherited from my father. "Alpha Wagner is in deep meditation preparing for the combat trials. He'll join us shortly."

The lie tasted bitter on my tongue. Rhett hadn't just disappeared—he'd severed our mind-link. The hollow ache in my chest where his presence should be felt like a physical wound.

"He better be," Marcus growled. "We can't go into the Summit without our Alpha."

I turned to Beta Crawford, whose calculating eyes missed nothing. "The warriors are restless. Perhaps you could—"

"I'm handling it," I cut him off before he could undermine me further. Seven years I'd spent building this pack from nothing, transforming Rhett from a nameless rogue into a territorial power. I wouldn't let Crawford's ambition destroy what I'd created.

"Form up!" I barked, my Alpha bloodline lending weight to my voice. The warriors reluctantly fell into position.

For three hours, I drilled them mercilessly, demonstrating combat techniques my father had taught me since childhood. Sweat dripped down my spine as I sparred with our lead warrior, dodging his impressive swing before sweeping his legs from under him.

"Again," I commanded, ignoring the burning in my muscles. If Rhett wouldn't lead them, I would.

## The Return of the Alpha

Three days later, the door to our hotel suite finally opened. Rhett strode in, his Alpha aura filling the space like a storm front. But something was wrong. His scent carried traces of stale motel air and medicinal herbs.

"Where have you been?" I demanded, relief warring with fury. "The warriors are a mess. Crawford's pushing boundaries. And we missed the strategic briefing."

Rhett loosened his tie with casual indifference. "I was needed elsewhere."

"Needed?" I echoed, disbelief coloring my voice. "The Summit starts tomorrow. We're scheduled to compete for territorial recognition—something we've worked seven years for."

"This couldn't wait," he replied, his tone dismissive. "Violeta had another anxiety attack. She needed me."

My stomach clenched at the name. Violeta Dunn—the she-wolf from Rhett's past who'd returned three months ago claiming some mysterious "fading sickness" only his Alpha aura could soothe.

"You missed the warrior briefing," I said through gritted teeth. "They're questioning your leadership."

"They wouldn't dare." Rhett's eyes flashed gold. "And neither should you."

"The Beta is—"

"Enough!" His voice cracked like a whip. "I don't need lectures from you about pack management. I'm still Alpha."

Silence stretched between us like a chasm. The Rhett I'd fallen for—the one who'd promised we'd build an empire together—felt like a distant memory.

"I was worried," I finally admitted, hating the vulnerability in my voice.

"You're not my mother, Parker." His laugh held no warmth. "Stop acting like you need to hover over me."

## The Shadow in the Hallway

The next morning, I found Delta James disrespecting my direct orders again. "The combat formation won't work if you keep breaking position," I snapped.

"She's not even our Luna," James muttered loud enough for everyone to hear. "Just the Alpha's bed warmer."

Fury surged through me. I stepped forward, my Alpha aura flaring. "You will show respect or—"

"Or what?" Rhett's voice cut through the tension. He emerged from the training hall, Violeta hovering at his side like a shadow.

"I'm disciplining a warrior who questioned my authority," I replied evenly.

"He's right to question it." Rhett's eyes held a challenge. "You're not Luna yet."

The words hit like a physical blow. Seven years together, and he still refused to mark me as his mate.

"James," Rhett continued, "next time you have concerns about Parker's orders, come to me directly."

I watched my authority crumble before my eyes as the warriors exchanged knowing glances. Rhett had just undermined me in front of everyone.

Later that night, I paced the hallway outside our suite, replaying the humiliation. A soft sound caught my attention—a feminine chuckle from the adjacent room.

I peered through the cracked door and froze. Violeta sat perched on the edge of a bed, her delicate facade nowhere to be seen. Her lips curved into a smirk as she texted someone on her phone.

"Soon," she whispered to herself. "Soon the pack will be mine."

A chill ran down my spine as I realized the truth—Violeta wasn't the fragile victim she pretended to be. She was a predator, and I was her prey.

And Rhett, the man I'd sacrificed everything for, was blind to it all.

The full moon cast long shadows across the forest floor as I completed my midnight ritual, the ancient words of the Moonstone bloodline still echoing in my mind. The sacred altar had glowed silver under my touch, accepting another year of Raymond's wolf strength in exchange for the pack's continued prosperity—a sacrifice he never knew he was making. I pulled my cloak tighter around my shoulders as I made my way back toward the pack house, my footsteps silent on the damp earth. Three years of betrayal had taught me to move like a ghost through my own territory, to be present yet invisible. Something caught my attention—a weak whimper coming from the edge of our borders. I paused, my senses heightening as I scanned the darkness. There, beneath a gnarled oak tree, lay a tiny bundle of darkness. I approached cautiously, my heart tightening as I realized what it was. A wolf pup, abandoned and barely breathing, his small body trembling with each shallow breath. His coat was unlike any I'd seen before—pure black with intricate silver markings that seemed to shimmer even in the moonlight.

The roar of the river gorge was deafening. Shadowveil and Ironridge warriors were running joint drills along the rocky banks, but I kept my eyes fixed on the rushing water. I hated the river. Years locked in the Moonhaven Pack's basement meant I had never been taught to swim. I was always the expendable blood-born daughter. Then, the flash flood hit. It came out of nowhere. A massive wall of muddy, violent water tore down the ravine with a terrifying crack. It slammed into the banks, washing away the solid ground beneath my feet. The cold was instant and brutal.
