My Alpha Rejected Me Before Stealing My Inheritance Novel Cover

My Alpha Rejected Me Before Stealing My Inheritance

At exactly 9:47 p.m., my entire world shattered into pieces. Standing in the third row at the sacred Mate Ceremony, I watched the double doors swing open. Damian, my fated mate of six years, walked right past me as if I were a total stranger. Clinging to his arm was Paris Hart, flaunting a rounded belly. Amidst the dead silence of two hundred pack members, Damian chose her, leaving me utterly rejected.

Chapter 4

Damian's hand didn't let go when I lunged. It tightened.

He yanked me back hard enough that my shoulder wrenched, spun me around, and shoved — one flat palm to my sternum — and I went down onto the stone floor. Hard. My palms hit first, then my knees, and the cold of the floor shot straight up through my bones.

Then the Alpha-tone hit.

"Seventy-two hours." His voice dropped into that register, the one that doesn't just fill your ears but presses down on your chest like a physical weight, like the air itself has decided to obey him. "I'll file the feral petition with the Council before the week is out. Wolfless. Bondless. Unstable. Every territory-share Hugh left you reverts to the sitting Alpha under feral-declaration law." He crouched down, close enough that I could see the cold calculation behind his eyes. "Everything he left you becomes mine. You become nothing."

My wolf — what was left of her — couldn't push back. She had nothing to push with. The tone pressed and pressed and I lay there, cheek an inch from the stone, and felt the weight of it like a boot on the back of my neck.

But something else happened.

Something that had been sealed for a very long time cracked.

Not broke. Cracked. The way a seed casing cracks before what's inside it forces its way out. A hairline fracture, small and quiet, somewhere deep beneath the dormancy and the grief and the six years of giving until there was nothing left to give. I felt it the same way I'd felt the mark go cold — sudden, physical, unmistakable.

I said nothing. I waited.

Damian stood, smoothed his shirt, and walked out. Paris followed, trailing her thick, wrong-smelling perfume behind her like a flag. The audience drifted. The kitchen emptied.

I got up. No one helped me, so I helped myself. Same as always.

I found the pocket watch in the waste bin by the door, where Paris had dropped it after the counter had done its work. The glass face was gone. The silver casing was dented, one side caved inward. But it was still in my hand, and that was what mattered.

I walked back to the kennel wing with Buster at my heel and the watch in my apron pocket, and I sat down on my cot, and I waited until the whole corridor went quiet.

Then I looked at the watch.

The impact had sprung something along the base — a seam I'd never noticed in twenty-three years of holding this watch, running my thumb over every surface of it the way you do with something you love without examining it. A thin line, barely a millimeter wide, where the backing didn't quite sit flush anymore.

I worked my thumbnail into it.

The compartment opened with a soft, precise click, like it had been waiting.

Inside: a small glass vial, identical to the ones lined up in the torn sock under my cot. The same bitter-clean smell. But this one had a label, written in my father's handwriting — the careful, slanted script I'd know anywhere, the same hand that had written the letter Paris had torn to pieces on this floor.

*STOP TAKING THESE.*

I sat with it in my palm for a long time. Long enough that Buster put his head on my knee and exhaled slowly through his nose.

Beneath the vial was a folded slip of paper, small enough to have been hidden there for years. Two lines only.

*Gianni Torres.*

And below it, a border-town address.

I read it twice. Then I sat in the dark and thought about my father — about the vials he'd put in my water glass every morning of my life, the ones I'd never once questioned, the ones that matched the ones in Damian's drawer that I'd been collecting for weeks without knowing why. I thought about Chandler Foster's nostrils flaring when he looked at me. About the way Buster had growled at him, low and certain, the way he'd never growled at anyone else in that house.

I thought about the crack inside me that hadn't broken anything. That had opened something.

I got off the cot and started moving.

The fifteen vials from under the cot. My phone with the ledger photographs. The shards of the watch, wrapped in a clean cloth. Every fragment of the letter I'd gathered from the kitchen floor — I'd been picking up pieces for days, quietly, whenever no one was watching, the way I'd learned to do everything now. I had most of it. Not all. Enough.

I packed it all into the inside pocket of my coat. Then I lay down with Buster pressed against my side and did not sleep.

Before dawn, I was moving.

Chandler Foster's residence sat on the pack's eastern edge, a low stone building half-hidden by old pines. I knew the path. I'd walked it years ago, when he was still just my father's old Gamma and I was still just the Luna who didn't know what she didn't know.

I was twenty meters from the door when I heard his voice.

Not spoken aloud. Leaking — the way a mind-link leaks when the shielding is sloppy, when the speaker thinks no one nearby is sensitive enough to catch it. I shouldn't have been able to hear it. I knew that even as I heard it.

*"The records are filed. The Council has no reason to question them. The declaration will hold before the seventy-two hours are up."*

I stopped walking.

Buster went rigid against my leg.

I stood in the pre-dawn dark with frost on the ground and my father's watch in my coat pocket and listened to my father's old Gamma tell Damian Evans exactly how he'd buried me.

I took one step back. Then another. Slow. Careful. Eyes on the window.

Chandler's head snapped toward the glass.

His nostrils flared — wide, sharp, the involuntary reflex of a wolf scenting something that didn't fit the picture he'd built in his head. For one suspended second, nothing moved.

Then his voice cut through the mind-link like a blade, and I heard every word of it.

*"She's here."*

His hand reached for something on the desk. I didn't wait to see what.

I turned and I ran — not back toward the pack house, not toward anything I'd ever called home — but forward, into the trees, toward the border, Buster's paws silent on the frozen ground beside me. Behind me, at the treeline to the north, I caught three shapes moving through the snow. Not running yet. Converging.

Seventy-two hours. A name on a slip of paper. A vial that said *stop.*

I ran.
