Chapter 2

The jet left Montana at dawn. I ran patrol first, like always. Then I changed into a gray suit and got on the plane.

Soren sat across from me. Two lawyers from our legal team sat in the back, papers spread across their knees. Nobody talked much.

"You didn't sleep," Soren said.

"I slept."

"For an hour, maybe." He handed me coffee. "You're allowed to be nervous, Mia."

"I'm not nervous." I opened my file. The dried lunar bloom sat pressed inside the cover. My mother's flower. I touched it once and closed the file again. "I'm ready."

He didn't push. Soren never did. That was why I trusted him.

---

The Lycan Council's Manhattan office was on the forty-first floor of a glass tower in Midtown. To humans, it was a law firm. To us, it was the highest court on the East Coast.

The lobby smelled like old paper and wolves who had been waiting too long.

A she-wolf in a navy suit came out to meet us. Silver hair, sharp cheekbones, reading glasses on a chain. She didn't smile.

"Ms. Patterson. I'm Eleanor Voss. I'll be handling your claim."

"Thank you for seeing me so fast."

"Don't thank me yet." She led us into a small room with a long table. "Bloodline claims are slow. Most of them fail. What do you want?"

I liked her right away.

"Two things," I said. "I'm filing a formal inheritance claim under my mother's title. Silverfang Luna. And I want an emergency audit of the Silverfang treasury. All of it was absorbed by the Ironvale Pack eight years ago."

Her eyebrows moved a quarter of an inch. "Ironvale. Landyn Wheeler's pack."

"Yes."

"On what grounds?"

I slid a folder across the table. Inside was a copy of the paper that ended my life. The mate-bond severance. His signature. My forged one. A Lycan Council registry stamp in the corner.

"On the grounds that this is a lie," I said.

Eleanor looked at me for a long moment. Then she put on her glasses.

---

She accepted the filing in forty minutes. Then she took the severance to the archive room.

We waited. Soren paced by the window. The lawyers whispered. I sat very still with my hands folded, the way I used to sit in my father's house when I was a child and in trouble.

I hated that I remembered that.

When Eleanor came back, her face looked different. Harder. She set two sheets side by side in front of me.

"This is your severance stamp," she said, tapping the left page. "This is a real stamp from the same year." She tapped the right. "Look at the border."

I leaned in. The real one had a plain double line. Mine had a thin crescent pattern woven through the edge.

"The crescent border," Eleanor said, "wasn't introduced until two years after the date on your document."

The room went silent.

"So it couldn't exist," Soren said slowly. "Not on that date."

"No. It's fraudulent on its face." Eleanor took her glasses off. "Whoever made this copied a newer stamp and never checked the history. Sloppy."

Not sloppy. Arrogant. Landyn never checked anything. He never thought anyone would look.

For eight years I had believed that paper. I had believed the Council itself had cut me loose. That I was so worthless even the law agreed.

And it was just a bad copy. A crescent in the wrong place.

My throat burned. I didn't let it reach my eyes.

"What happens now?" I asked.

"I'm flagging this for immediate tribunal review." She was already writing. "And Ms. Patterson? If this was never truly filed, we need to talk about what that means for your bond. Not today. But soon."

She didn't explain. I didn't ask. Something inside my chest went very quiet, like an animal listening.

---

The news moved fast. Packs always talk.

By evening, Soren had a call from an old contact who still worked security at the Ironvale pack house. He put it on speaker in our hotel suite.

"Wheeler heard by four o'clock," the man said. "Called his lawyers in. Told them to bury the Council in motions. Delays, objections, whatever they could find."

"And how did he look?" I asked.

"Calm. Told his inner circle it was a paperwork nuisance. Said the claim would die in a month." A pause. "But after they left, he stayed in his office alone. I watched him on the camera. He kept fixing his cufflinks. Over and over."

Soren glanced at me.

"One more thing," the man said, lower now. "His wolf's been off since he came back from Montana. Pacing. Growling at nothing. His Beta won't go near him."

Soren hung up. I walked to the window.

Manhattan glowed below me. Somewhere out there, Landyn was telling himself this was manageable. That he had handled worse. That I was still the broken girl he left behind.

I pressed my palm to the cold glass.

And for one strange second, I felt something. Not mine. A restless, prowling pressure at the very edge of me. Like a wolf walking circles in a cage.

Then it was gone.

I stepped back from the window, heart pounding, and didn't tell Soren what I'd felt.
