Chapter 2

I woke up in the inn at dawn with my hands already rolled into fists.

The room was small and clean. Forty-three dollars a night. I had paid for a week in cash. The window looked out over the town square, which was empty except for the hardware store owner sweeping his front step. I watched him for a while. His movements were steady and ordinary. Nobody was hunting him.

I made coffee in the single-cup machine on the dresser and sat on the edge of the bed with my notebook open. Nine years of alliance correspondence. Treaty drafts. Border concessions. Every letter I had written, every negotiation I had brokered. I had kept copies of all of it, filed by date and cross-referenced by pack. It was the habit of someone who never lived anywhere she didn't fully understand.

The patrol routes were in there too. Ironvale's classified defense infrastructure. I had memorized them because I couldn't sleep until I knew every vulnerability in the territory I had called home. Now I was staring at my own handwriting and thinking about what someone could do with information like that.

I should have burned them. I didn't.

Instead I catalogued the risk the way I catalogue injuries: high probability of misuse, moderate difficulty of replication, catastrophic consequences if sold. Then I closed the notebook and finished my coffee.

The wolf that had howled and died was still gone. The thing underneath—the older, bigger thing that had rolled over in the dark—was quiet. I didn't know what it was. I didn't have the energy to find out.

I was pouring a second cup when the noise started.

Trucks. Multiple engines. The low rumble of an Alpha aura pressing on the air before its owner even arrives. I set the cup down and moved to the window.

Six vehicles pulled into the square. Trevor's was in front. I recognized the dent in the rear bumper from the time he clipped a fence post during a border run and I had to negotiate the repair cost with the landowner because he couldn't be bothered. Behind him were warriors I had trained. Boys who used to call me ma'am.

They parked in a semicircle facing the inn. Trevor got out first. His chin was already lifting.

I pulled on my jacket and walked downstairs.

The inn's owner—a human woman in her sixties who asked no questions and kept her coffee hot—was standing behind the front desk with her hand on the phone. "Do you need me to call someone?"

"No." I kept my voice steady. "It's pack business. Stay inside."

She looked at me for a long moment, then nodded and stepped back.

I walked out into the square.

Trevor was waiting in the center with Marcus Cole at his side. Marcus had been his Beta for six years. I had recommended him for the position after he held the north fence during a rogue incursion. He wouldn't look at me now.

The warriors fanned out in a loose perimeter. Civilians were starting to gather at the edges—humans who didn't know what they were watching, only that it looked official and ugly. Someone had a phone out.

"Camila Parker." Trevor's voice carried across the square, loud and formal. His Alpha tone bled into every syllable. "You are accused of treason against the Ironvale Pack. You sold classified defense routes to the Thornridge Pack. You are under arrest."

The words landed like stones in cold water.

I stopped ten feet from him and let the silence stretch. My voice, when it came, was quiet. Controlled. "That's a lie."

"We found the documents in your quarters." Marcus spoke this time, his tone flat and rehearsed. "Copies of the patrol routes. Correspondence with Thornridge operatives. Your scent was all over them."

Of course it was. I had written the originals. But I hadn't touched those files in months, and I sure as hell hadn't contacted Thornridge.

"Who found them?" I asked.

Trevor's jaw tightened. "Stormi. She was organizing your things after you left."

I almost laughed. It came out as a single hard breath through my nose. "Stormi went through my quarters. Stormi found documents I supposedly hid. Stormi brought them to you." I looked at Marcus. "And you believed her."

Marcus said nothing. His eyes slid away.

"You have no wolf." Trevor took a step forward. His shoulders settled back, that tell I had watched for nine years. "No pack. No standing. You will submit, or I will make you submit."

The Alpha tone cracked down like a whip. It pressed on my spine, my skull, the space behind my ribs where my wolf used to live. Kneel. Be small. Stop talking.

I held his gaze and did not move.

Something flickered in his expression—confusion, then anger. The command should have worked. It always worked. But there was nothing left in me for it to grip.

"I didn't sell anything," I said. My voice was still quiet, still steady. "But you already know that. You just need me to be guilty so you can stop feeling like the man who threw away nine years for a woman who wears your scent like perfume."

Trevor's hand moved fast. He grabbed my arm and yanked me forward. The warriors closed in.

I didn't fight. There were six of them and one of me, and my wolf was gone. Fighting would have been stupid.

But I memorized their faces. Every single one.
