Chapter 3

The scent came back in pieces.

I noticed it first on the third morning in Nighthollow, when I woke and the air in my room smelled different. Richer. Like something blooming under snow. I thought it was the fire, or the herbs Elara hung to dry near the window. But when I stepped into the hallway, a passing Delta wolf stopped mid-stride and his head turned toward me before he caught himself and dropped his gaze.

He'd never done that before.

By the fifth day, it was unmistakable. Wolves I'd passed a dozen times without acknowledgment now moved aside when I approached. Not afraid—careful. Like I was something breakable or important or both. The pack's senior Gamma, a grizzled male named Torren who'd barely grunted at me before, actually inclined his head when I crossed the courtyard.

I didn't understand it. My wolf understood before I did. She rose closer to the surface each day, restless and alert, like she was waking from a sleep that had lasted too long.

Elara came to check my dressings that afternoon. The burns were healing faster than they should have—pink new skin where the blisters had been, only faint scarring left. She unwrapped the gauze with her usual clinical efficiency, but when she leaned close, I saw her nostrils flare slightly.

"Your scent's changed," she said.

I blinked. "What?"

"It's stronger. Layered." She set the old bandages aside and reached for clean ones. "When you first arrived, you smelled like any unmated she-wolf. Now—" She paused, choosing words. "Now you smell like someone who shouldn't be unmated."

My stomach tightened. "I don't understand."

Elara's hands stilled. She looked at me directly, the way she did when she was about to say something I wouldn't want to hear. "How long have you been taking herbal supplements?"

"Since I was a child. My parents—my adoptive parents—they said it was for my health. To help my wolf develop properly." The words sounded hollow even as I said them. "Why?"

"Because the compound shedding from your system right now is consistent with long-term scent suppressants." Her voice was steady, factual. "Administered since infancy, by the concentration I'm reading. Someone masked your true scent for twenty years, Alina."

The room tilted. I sat down on the edge of the bed because my legs wouldn't hold me.

"That's not—" I started. Stopped. Thought about the daily tea my mother brewed every morning without fail. The way she watched me drink it, always. The herbal capsules I took at dinner. The insistence that missing even one dose would make me sick.

The fact that my wolf had stayed dormant until the night Alexander rejected me, when every other wolf awakened by sixteen.

"Why would they do that?" My voice came out small.

Elara shook her head. "I don't know. But whoever you really are—your bloodline, your lineage—someone wanted it hidden."

I pressed my palm flat against my belly. My pup shifted under my hand, a small flutter that anchored me when everything else felt like it was coming loose.

"The unmated Alphas showing up at the border," I said slowly. "That's because of this?"

Elara nodded. "Your scent's drawing them. They can't name what it is, but they know it's rare. Prince Franklin's doubled the border guard. Quietly. He hasn't said why, but the patrol captains know."

I looked at the window. Beyond the glass, Nighthollow stretched out in clean white snow and dark pines. Somewhere past the tree line, wolves I'd never met were pacing borders because my scent had reached them through miles of winter air.

I thought about my parents. The tea. The capsules. The way they'd never quite met my eyes when I asked why my wolf hadn't come.

I thought about Alexander, who'd marked me and mated me and never once questioned why his Luna's scent was so faint it barely registered.

I thought about the silver wolf that had torn free of me in the snow—enormous, blazing, impossible.

"What am I?" I whispered.

Elara's expression softened slightly. "I don't know yet. But I think you're about to find out."

---

That evening, I walked through the pack house because staying in my room felt like suffocating. My wolf needed to move. I needed to move.

The corridors were quiet. Warm light spilled from the common rooms. Somewhere distant, I heard laughter and the low rumble of conversation. Normal pack life. I'd spent three years managing this kind of life in Shadowvale, and now I was a guest in someone else's.

I turned a corner and nearly walked into Franklin.

He stepped back smoothly, giving me space before I could ask for it. His scent hit me like it always did—cedar and winter rain, clean and cold and somehow exactly right. My wolf lifted its head inside me, alert and interested in a way that made my breath catch.

"Alina." His voice was quiet. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine." The lie came automatically.

His grey eyes studied me for a moment. He didn't call me on it. "Walk with me?"

I should have said no. I didn't.

We walked in silence through the corridors and out onto the stone terrace that overlooked Nighthollow's training grounds. The night air was sharp and clear. Stars scattered across the sky like someone had spilled salt. Franklin stood slightly to my left, close enough that I could feel his warmth but not so close that I felt cornered.

"Elara told you," he said after a while.

I nodded. "About the suppressants."

"I scented it the night you arrived." He kept his gaze on the horizon. "Your scent was fading in and out—like something breaking through a surface. I've never seen that before."

"Do you know what it means?"

"No." He turned to look at me then. "But I know it's important. And I know you're safe here while you figure it out."

I wanted to believe him. Part of me—the part that had spent three years learning not to trust promises—said I shouldn't.

But my wolf trusted him. She had from the first moment.

"The Alphas at the border," I said. "They're here because of me."

"Yes."

"You doubled the guard."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Franklin was quiet for a moment. Then he said, very simply, "Because you asked me why I'm helping you, and I told you the truth. No one here will hurt you. That includes wolves from other territories who don't know how to control themselves around a scent they've never encountered before."

My throat tightened. I looked away before he could see my face.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

He didn't answer. We stood there in the cold, side by side, and I felt his presence like a steady weight beside me—not pressing, not demanding. Just there.

When I finally went back inside, his scent stayed with me all the way to my room.

---

That night, I dreamed of my mother's hands pouring tea into a cup. The steam rose between us. She smiled and said, "Drink, sweetheart. It'll help you grow strong."

In the dream, I drank. And when I looked down, my reflection in the tea was a wolf I didn't recognize—silver and enormous, with eyes that glowed like moonlight.

I woke with my hand pressed flat against my belly and Franklin's scent still lingering in my lungs like something I'd been breathing my whole life without knowing it.
