Chapter 3

Mason rose from his chair, and the air changed.

It wasn't sound. It was pressure—a frequency that hit the base of my skull and spread through my bones like cold water. Every wolf in the hall went still. Forks paused mid-air. Conversations died mid-word. The chandeliers above us hummed with it.

Alpha-tone. Full force. Transmitted through the bond that was supposed to be severed but wasn't.

I felt it arrive inside my body before I heard the words. A command sliding through the mark on my neck, down my spine, wrapping around my ribs like wire. My wolf—silent for seven years—slammed awake in my chest. Not a stir. A snarl. Low and vicious and so sudden I nearly gasped.

"Quinn Harper," Mason said. His voice was calm. Clinical. "You will be escorted to the third-floor balcony and secured with silver restraints for the duration of the night. This is punishment for endangering the Luna and her unborn heir."

The hall was silent. No one moved. No one looked at me.

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm. The skin was already broken from earlier. The pain was sharp and clean and mine.

Two warriors materialized at my elbows. I recognized one—the younger one with the scar through his eyebrow. He wouldn't meet my eyes. His hand hovered near my arm but didn't touch.

I stood. The chair scraped against the floor, too loud in the silence.

My wolf was awake now. Fully awake. Pacing behind my ribs, testing the edges of something I didn't understand. I could feel it—not as a separate thing but as an extension of myself I'd forgotten I had. It was furious. It was hungry. It wanted blood.

*Wait,* I told it. *Not yet.*

I walked toward the balcony doors. The warriors followed. I didn't look back at Mason. I didn't look at Romina, who was sitting upright now, one hand pressed to her throat, her hives already fading. I didn't look at the forty witnesses who would tell this story for years.

I walked ahead of them. I would not be dragged.

The balcony doors opened onto cold so sharp it felt like knives. The temperature had dropped since dinner. Snow was starting—small flakes, dry and fast, the kind that comes before a real storm. The sky was low and gray, pressing down on the pack house like a lid.

The younger warrior pulled out the silver restraints. His hands were shaking.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. So quiet I almost didn't hear it.

I held out my wrists.

The silver locked around them with a click that sounded final. The burn was immediate—a searing, chemical agony that made my vision white out at the edges. Werewolf flesh wasn't designed for this. Silver was poison. Silver was punishment. Silver was what you used when you wanted someone to remember pain.

The warriors left. The door closed. The lock turned.

I was alone.

The snow thickened. The wind picked up. My body locked against the cold, muscles seizing, breath coming short and shallow. The silver ate into my wrists with methodical cruelty, and I could smell my own skin burning—sweet and wrong, like meat left too long on a fire.

My wolf slammed against the inside of me. Not pacing now. Fighting. Clawing. It understood the bars finally. It understood the cage.

I dug my thumbnail into my palm and breathed. In. Out. Count to four. Hold. Release.

The cold deepened.

And then I wasn't on the balcony anymore.

I was in the snow seven years ago, collapsed on my side, my hands pressed to my belly, feeling the warmth drain out of me in slow pulses. The pack healer's voice, clinical and distant: *The cold damaged the tissue. You won't carry again.* Mason's face, blank and unreadable, standing in the doorway of the clinic. He hadn't apologized. He'd just looked at me and left.

I was there again. Right now. Feeling it happen.

The pup I'd lost. The silence after. The way my body had felt empty for months, like something had been scooped out and nothing had grown back to fill the space.

The grief rose in a tide that had no bottom.

And something deep inside me—something that had been sleeping since I was sixteen, since the rogue attack, since the healers saved my life and Mason marked me before I could wake—stopped sleeping.

It didn't ask permission.

My bones cracked. Not broke—*cracked*, like ice splitting under pressure. My spine arched. My ribs expanded. The agony was total, consuming, a fire that started in my marrow and spread outward until there was nothing left of me but pain.

The silver chains snapped.

Not bent. Snapped. Like thread.

My body exploded outward. Fur. Claws. Teeth. A wolf erupted from my skin—massive, luminous, shimmering with its own pale light. Larger than any she-wolf I'd ever seen. Larger than some Alphas. My paws hit the balcony floor and the wood splintered.

The mark on my neck cracked.

I felt it—a sharp, searing fracture, like glass struck at the exact resonant frequency. Light burst from the breaking bond, radiating outward in a pulse I could see even through the wolf's eyes. It spread across the territory like a signal flare.

Inside the pack house, someone screamed.

My wolf threw back its head and howled.

The sound was primal. Ancient. It carried across the snow, through the trees, over the territory boundary. Every wolf within earshot dropped to their knees.

I felt them fall. Felt their necks bare. Felt their wolves submit without their permission.

The storm roared. The snow fell.

And I stood on the balcony, silver chains broken at my feet, and howled again.
