My Alpha Poisoned Me for His New Luna Novel Cover

My Alpha Poisoned Me for His New Luna

At 8:47 on New Year's Eve, Damian bound the Luna Mantle around Lilith Sorrell and named her Luna-elect of Ironveil. I stood in the crowd in a dress I'd mended myself, waiting for him to speak my name. Instead, the mate bond in my chest turned cold, then hollow, and my wolf screamed where no one could hear. Silver light flickered beneath my skin, bright enough to make Elder Voss's granddaughters step back. I hid it. Across the hall, Lilith's practiced surprise couldn't mask the cold satisfaction in her eyes. The Alpha chose wrong — and I'm about to make him feel it.

Chapter 1

The Luna Mantle clicked shut around Lilith's throat at 8:47 on New Year's Eve, and something in my chest went quiet the way a door goes quiet when it finally locks.

I'd been standing in the crowd for an hour in a dress I'd mended twice myself, waiting for Damian to say my name. Instead he lifted the silver-and-moonstone collar off its velvet cushion — the collar I'd watched the pack jeweler polish for three days — and fastened it around Lilith's neck like he'd done it a hundred times in his head already.

"Lilith Sorrell," he said, his voice carrying Alpha-tone even though he wasn't trying to command anyone, "Luna-elect of Ironveil."

The bond in my sternum went cold first, then hollow, like a fire someone had walked away from mid-burn. My wolf let out one sound — not a howl anyone else could hear, just a raw, internal cry that scraped the inside of my ribs — and then went rigid, ears flat, teeth bared at nothing.

Heat flickered under my skin. Silver light, there and gone, bright enough that the two wolves nearest me — Elder Voss's granddaughters — actually stepped back. I clamped it down with both fists at my sides before anyone else could see it.

Lilith found my eyes across the hall. Her hand trembled against the mantle, her mouth parted in practiced surprise — and underneath it, just for a second, satisfaction sat there naked and cold.

I didn't run. I didn't cry. I walked straight through the parting crowd to the dais, my spine so straight it ached, and I looked at both of them.

"Congratulations," I said. My voice came out even, almost gentle. "To you both."

The whispering in the hall died completely. Damian's jaw ticked — he'd braced for tears, for a scene he could later describe as hysterical. My composure unsettled him more than screaming ever could have. Lilith's smile faltered, just slightly, like she'd expected a fight and didn't know what to do without one.

I turned and walked out. I held myself together one hallway, one staircase, one door at a time, until the banquet doors shut behind me and the music turned to a muffled thrum through the walls.

—

Our quarters were dark and cold when I got there. Five years of shared space — his boots by the door, my healing kit on the shelf, the quilt I'd sewn the winter he broke his collarbone. I sat down at my supply desk, pulled out clean paper, and started writing.

*I, Claire Ashworth, formally petition for release from the mate bond with Damian Ironveil, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack—*

My hand didn't shake. That surprised me more than anything else that night.

I opened the bottom drawer and took out the bone talisman — three months of careful carving, meant for a birthday gift, for a Mate Ceremony that kept getting pushed to "soon." I closed my fist around it until it cracked, then again until it was fragments, and let them fall across the wet ink of the petition like snow.

The bite-guard was next — the silver cuff we'd bought together, engraved with both our names, waiting for a mark he never gave. I walked it to the fireplace and dropped it into the coals. It hissed, warped, blackened. I watched without blinking until it was unrecognizable.

The bond in my chest throbbed like a bruise I was done pressing on.

—

He came in before dawn. Not for me — for a jacket, tossed over the chair from some drunken hour of the party. He stopped when he saw me still at the desk, the petition face-down under my forearm, the fireplace gone gray and cold.

"You're overreacting," Damian said, rolling his shoulders the way he always did before a command. "Arrangements will be explained in time."

I didn't answer. I capped my pen, folded the petition once, and slid it into the inside pocket of my sweater, against my ribs, where he couldn't see it.

I looked at him. Just looked, steady and unblinking, until he was the one who broke first and glanced away — a small thing, nothing he'd ever admit to noticing. But something in the room shifted anyway, some balance neither of us had named yet.

He found his jacket. At the door, he paused, not turning around.

"Lilith wants those pastries from the bakery on Route 9 in the morning," he said, already half out into the hallway. "See that it's handled."
