Chapter 2

The envelope arrived three days after I left the estate.

I opened it alone in my room, the door locked, the mind-link sealed so tightly even my own wolf couldn't feel Grant's presence bleeding through. Inside was a single document, dense with legal language and stamped with the seal of a pack-law advocate I'd never met in person. Cedric Hale. Neutral territory. No allegiance to Silvercrest or any Alpha.

I read it once. Then twice. Then a third time, my fingertips pressed together so hard they went white.

The Founder's Blood Right was real. Not legend. Not symbolic. Real.

It was embedded in Silvercrest's original charter, written in the old language by wolves who understood that power without accountability was tyranny. The clause was clear: any direct descendant of the founding bloodline could strip an Alpha of title and authority if that Alpha betrayed the pack's founding principles—theft of communal resources, abandonment of bloodline duty, or willful harm to the pack's future.

It required only public invocation before assembled witnesses. No vote. No challenge period. Irrevocable.

It hadn't been used in four generations. But the language was unambiguous.

I folded the document carefully, my hands steady now, and placed it in the inner pocket of my coat. Right beside the pressed moonflower I always carried. The pack's founding emblem. My birthright.

For the first time since I walked out of that estate, I felt something that wasn't rage or exhaustion.

I felt ready.

---

The call came two days later.

Not from Grant. From the pup school.

"Luna Athena?" The teacher's voice was careful, apologetic. "I wanted to let you know—there was a visitor today. A she-wolf named Lilia Mills. She said she had Alpha Grant's permission to meet Phoebe."

My wolf went very still.

"She brought gifts," the teacher continued. "Expensive ones. And a puppy. A golden retriever. Phoebe was... confused. But the woman was very warm. Very insistent that she and Phoebe should spend time together."

I thanked her. Ended the call. Drove to the school before my hands could start shaking.

Phoebe was waiting in the courtyard, sitting cross-legged on the grass with the puppy in her lap. It was all golden fur and oversized paws, wriggling with the boundless energy of something too young to know it was being used.

She looked up when she saw me, her silver-grey eyes—my eyes—bright and uncertain.

"Mama, look! A lady gave him to me. She said Daddy wanted me to have him."

I knelt beside her, my hand automatically reaching to stroke the puppy's soft head. It licked my fingers, tail wagging.

"What else did the lady say?" I asked quietly.

Phoebe's face scrunched up, the way it always did when she was trying to remember something important. "She said her name was Lilia. She said she's going to live with us soon. That she's going to take care of me and Daddy."

My wolf snarled so loud inside my chest I thought Phoebe might hear it.

"She smelled like Daddy," Phoebe added, her voice dropping to a whisper. She leaned closer, her small hand gripping my sleeve. "Mama, why does she smell like Daddy?"

I looked at my daughter. Six years old. Perceptive. Brave. Asking the question I'd been too afraid to name aloud.

I pulled her into my arms, the puppy squirming between us, and pressed my face into her hair. She smelled like sunshine and the lavender soap we used at home. Clean. Innocent. Mine.

"I don't know, sweetheart," I whispered. It was the first lie I'd ever told her. "But we're going to figure it out."

She nodded against my shoulder, trusting me the way children trust their mothers—completely, without question, without knowing how fragile that trust makes you.

We drove home in silence, the puppy asleep in Phoebe's lap.

---

That night, after Phoebe was in bed with the puppy curled at her feet—she'd named him Buster, with the decisive authority of a child claiming something as entirely her own—I locked myself in my room.

I sealed the mind-link so tightly the bond felt like a wall of ice between us.

Then I let my wolf out.

Not a shift. Just the howl I'd been holding back since the estate. Since the crib. Since Lilia's bright, careless voice describing my daughter as "too soft."

It tore out of me, soundless and furious, a thing made of seven years of invisible sacrifice and swallowed rage. My bones rattled. My hands shook. The pressed moonflower in my coat pocket seemed to burn against my ribs.

Lilia had crossed the line.

Not by sleeping with my mate. Not by carrying his child. Not even by taking my title.

She had touched my daughter.

I opened my laptop. Pulled up the timeline I'd been building in secret—dates, financial records, the deed transfer, the Beta's intelligence, the demoted warrior's documentation.

I'd planned to wait. To gather more. To be certain.

But Phoebe's small voice echoed in my head: *Why does she smell like Daddy?*

I opened a new message to my grandmother at Moonveil. Three words.

*I'm coming home.*

Then I opened another to the Beta. The message was longer this time, precise and cold.

*The Blood Moon Banquet is in three weeks. I need a list of every Alpha and elder who will attend. I need Dorian Voss and Maren on standby. And I need you to make sure Grant doesn't suspect a thing.*

His reply came within minutes.

*Understood, Luna.*

I closed the laptop. Pressed my fingertips together. Felt the document in my coat pocket like a promise.

The timeline had just compressed from months to weeks.

And when I walked into that banquet hall, Grant wouldn't see me coming until it was too late.
