Chapter 5

The Pack Alliance Celebration stretched along the lakeshore like a living tapestry. Wolves from three territories mingled under strings of lanterns, their voices rising and falling with the rhythm of pack politics dressed up as festivity. Ironvale had spared no expense. Long tables groaned under platters of roasted meat and fresh bread. A band played near the treeline. Children ran shrieking through the shallows while their parents pretended not to watch them with one eye always tracking.

I stood near the back of the crowd in a simple gray dress. No one had told me where to stand. I'd simply arrived and found my place already decided by the empty space that opened around me.

Oliver stood at the ceremonial dock with Kinsley at his right hand. She wore Silvercrest green, her hair pinned in an elaborate twist that caught the late afternoon light. She laughed at something he said, her hand resting lightly on his forearm. The mark on my neck pulsed once, transmitting the warmth of her palm through the bond. I pressed my fingers against it and breathed through my teeth.

The dock was old. I'd noticed that when we first arrived. The wood was weathered, the support beams darkened with age and water damage. It jutted out over the deepest part of the lake, built decades ago when Ironvale's territory had extended farther east and this shoreline had been a major gathering point.

No one else seemed concerned.

Beta Conrad stood beside Oliver, gesturing toward the Silvercrest delegation with the practiced ease of a man conducting a transaction. The Gamma laughed too loud at something. Kinsley tilted her head and smiled. Oliver's posture was relaxed, his hand moving toward hers on the railing.

I felt the exact moment their fingers touched.

The bond transmitted it like a live wire. Not just the physical contact but the intention behind it—the ease, the public claim, the performance of intimacy that everyone on that dock could see. My throat closed. I reached into my pocket for the small glass vial, but my fingers were shaking too hard to uncork it.

Then the wood groaned.

It wasn't loud. Just a low, splintering sound that most of the crowd didn't hear over the music and conversation. But I heard it. And I saw the way the dock's center beam sagged.

I opened my mouth to shout a warning.

The dock collapsed.

Not all at once. The center section gave way first, sending a cluster of wolves—Kinsley, two Silvercrest guards, a young Ironvale Delta—plunging into the churning water below. Kinsley's shriek cut through the celebration like a blade. The remaining sections of dock tilted violently. Wolves scrambled backward. Some made it to shore. Others didn't.

I was standing on the dock's outer edge when it started to go.

Oliver's head whipped toward the sound of Kinsley's scream. His eyes found mine across the chaos. And in that split second, I saw him make his choice.

"Stay where you are," he commanded. His voice carried the Alpha tone—that resonance that bypassed thought and went straight to the nervous system. "Don't move."

My body locked.

Not metaphorically. Not emotionally. Physically. The Alpha command seized every muscle, every nerve, every involuntary system that might have let me run or dive or even lift my arms. I was a statue in human skin, standing on a collapsing dock while my mate's voice held me frozen.

He shoved past me without a glance.

I felt the brush of his shoulder against mine as he dove toward Kinsley. Felt his wolf surge forward with protective instinct. Felt every ounce of his focus narrow to the woman screaming his name in the water below.

The remaining dock section beneath my feet gave way.

I hit the water rigid. My arms were locked at my sides. My legs wouldn't kick. The Alpha command was still active, still holding, and my body obeyed it even as the lake closed over my head.

The cold was immediate and absolute. Water rushed into my nose, my mouth, my lungs. I tried to move and couldn't. Tried to surface and couldn't. The current dragged me deeper, and all I could do was sink.

I was drowning two feet from where my mate had been standing.

And through the bond—through that sacred, Moon Goddess-blessed connection that was supposed to protect me—I felt his arms close around Kinsley. Felt his wolf's relief as he pulled her to safety. Felt the exact pressure of her body against his chest as he carried her toward shore.

He was saving her while his command drowned me.

The mark on my neck burned. Not the dull throb I'd grown used to. Not even the sharp cold of betrayal. This was different. This was clarity arriving in my blood like venom. This was my body finally understanding what my mind had been too afraid to name.

I was going to die wearing his mark.

Just like my mother had died wearing my father's.

My vision went black at the edges. My lungs were full of lake water. The current rolled me deeper. And somewhere in the part of my brain that was still conscious, still fighting, I felt something else.

Pressure.

Not from outside. From inside. That closed door in my chest—the one that had been under sustained force for weeks—finally gave way.

And what came through was not a voice or a thought or even a feeling.

It was a roar.

Something massive moved inside my rib cage. Something ancient. My bones cracked. My skin split. Silver fur erupted from places that had never known fur before. The Alpha command shattered like glass against the force of what was emerging.

My wolf was awake.

And she was furious.

The last thing I felt before my human consciousness went under was her name, spoken in a voice that was mine and not mine, old and certain and done with drowning.
