Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, but I didn't know it yet. I was standing at the edge of the Pack Alliance Banquet hall in a plain gray dress, watching Kinsley Crawford walk beside Oliver wearing a ceremonial Luna sash.

The sash was crimson silk with gold threading. It was reserved for marked mates. Not chosen mates. Not political arrangements. Marked.

I still had the mark on my neck. I could feel it—a faint throb, always there, like a second pulse. But the woman wearing the sash wasn't me.

The hall smelled like roasted meat and wine. Pack members from three territories filled the space, their voices layered into a low hum of celebration. Ironvale's new alliance with Silvercrest was the reason for the banquet. Oliver stood at the center of it all, his hand resting lightly on Kinsley's elbow as he guided her through the crowd.

Then the scent hit me.

Cedar and amber. Kinsley's scent, but not just in the air—on him. Layered on his skin like a second skin. The bond transmitted it with biological fidelity, the way it transmitted everything. I could feel the intimacy of it through the mark, the closeness required for a scent to settle that deep. My stomach turned.

I pressed my palm against the wall to steady myself. The mark on my neck throbbed harder.

No one was looking at me. They were all looking at her.

I moved through the crowd toward Oliver. I needed to hear him say it wasn't what it looked like. I needed him to explain the sash, the scent, the way she stood beside him like she belonged there.

I paused outside a corridor near the back of the hall. Voices drifted through the open doorway—Oliver's voice, low and conversational, speaking to his Beta and Gamma.

"She's a stray Omega I marked out of guilt," Oliver said. "You think I'd have chosen her if I hadn't been half-dead in a ravine?"

The Beta laughed. The Gamma laughed.

I didn't move.

The bond pulsed. I felt Oliver's hand settle on Kinsley's waist in the adjacent room—the pressure of his palm, the warmth of his fingers. The sensation came through the mark like it was happening to my own body.

I stood in the corridor and filed it. The way I'd filed everything since I was a child. Accurate threat assessment was the only safety I'd ever had.

I walked into the room.

Oliver turned. His expression shifted—surprise, then something that looked like annoyance. The Beta and Gamma went quiet.

"Madeleine," Oliver said. "What are you doing back here?"

"I need to talk to you," I said. My voice was steady. "Privately."

He glanced at the Beta, then back at me. "We're in the middle of something."

"It's about the sash," I said. "And the scent."

His jaw tightened. "Not here."

"Then where?"

He stepped toward me. His aura thickened in the air, the Alpha presence that usually made wolves instinctively lower their eyes. I didn't lower mine.

"Madeleine," he said, his voice dropping into the Alpha tone—the command that ran through my nervous system like electricity. My body locked. My jaw clamped shut mid-breath. The question I'd been about to ask died in my throat.

He waited until I stopped trying to speak, then continued in his normal voice. "The Kinsley arrangement is pack politics. You're too low-ranked to understand it. And your jealousy is embarrassing me."

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

The command released. My body unlocked. I stood there, breathing carefully, and recognized the architecture I'd been living in. My mother's kitchen. Rebuilt in a pack house.

Inside my mind, something stirred. Not a voice. Not yet. A pressure, like a fist pressing from the inside of a closed door.

"Do you understand?" Oliver asked.

I nodded once.

He turned back to the Beta and Gamma. Dismissed.

I walked out of the room, through the banquet hall, past the tables of food no one had offered me, and out into the cold night air. The mark on my neck throbbed with every step.

I didn't cry. I hadn't cried where people could see since I was ten years old.

But the pressure behind that closed door pushed harder.

And somewhere deep inside my chest, something ancient opened one eye.
