Chapter 5

The morning light came through the bedroom window soft and golden. Hudson was still asleep beside me, one arm thrown across the pillow. I slipped out of bed without waking him and went downstairs to make coffee.

I brought it to him on a tray. Two cups. His black, mine with cream. A small plate of the pastries he liked. When I set it on the nightstand, he stirred and opened his eyes.

"Morning," he murmured. Reached for my hand.

I let him take it. Sat on the edge of the bed. Smiled.

"I was thinking," I said quietly. "About the pack. About moving forward."

He sat up slightly. "Yeah?"

I handed him his coffee. Watched him take the first sip. "You've been working so hard to stabilize things. The Silverfang alliance—it's a real achievement, Hudson. The pack should see that. They should see you strong."

His expression shifted. Interest. Pride.

"What are you suggesting?"

I let the idea form slowly, like I was thinking it through as I spoke. "A formal Pack Tribunal. Not for discipline—for celebration. To honor the alliance. Show the neighboring packs that Ironveil is stronger than ever." I paused. "And that we are too."

He set the cup down. Looked at me with something that might have been genuine warmth. "That's... actually a good idea."

"You could invite the allied Alphas. Regional leaders. Make it a real display of strength." I tilted my head slightly. "Maybe even extend an invitation to the Lycan Council. As a gesture of respect."

His eyes lit up. I watched it happen—the ego responding, the vision expanding in his mind.

"A Lycan Council presence would be significant," he said slowly. "It would show that Ironveil operates at that level."

"Exactly," I said. Squeezed his hand. "This could be the moment that defines your legacy, Hudson. Not the difficulties. The triumph."

He pulled me closer. Kissed my forehead. "You're right. We'll do it. I'll start the invitations today."

I leaned into him. Let him hold me. My thumb pressed against the inside of my wrist where he couldn't see it.

"I'm proud of you," I whispered.

He believed me.

---

By afternoon, Hudson had taken over the planning completely. He sat in his office with Isaac, drafting the guest list, expanding it with every name. Alpha Dorian Ashveil from Silverfang. Three neighboring pack leaders. The regional council representative.

"We should make this bigger," he said, leaning back in his chair. "Show them what Ironveil really is."

Isaac nodded. "The hall can accommodate up to two hundred if we use the full space."

"Do it," Hudson said. "And send a formal invitation to the Lycan Council. Request Prince Nighthollow as the delegation lead."

I was passing through the hallway when I heard it. I kept walking. Didn't pause. Didn't react.

In my study, I opened the encrypted channel to Caelan. Typed three words: *He invited you.*

The response came fast. *Confirmed. I'll attend.*

Then, ten seconds later: *The Lycan King will accompany me.*

I stared at the screen. Read it again. My heart didn't speed up. It slowed. Settled into something cold and certain.

I typed back: *Perfect.*

---

Hudson received the Lycan King's acceptance two days later. He was in the dining room when the message came through. He stood up so fast his chair scraped the floor.

"The King himself," he said, almost breathless. "Tessa—the Lycan King is coming to Ironveil."

I looked up from my tea. Let my eyes widen. "Hudson, that's incredible."

"This is exactly what we needed." He paced. "This puts us on the map. This changes everything."

I stood. Crossed to him. Put my hand on his arm. "You've earned this," I said softly. "All of it."

He kissed me. Hard. Certain.

I kissed him back.

---

The sound system installation happened at midnight three days before the Tribunal. I told the pack house night staff I was overseeing the setup personally—Luna's attention to detail, making sure everything was perfect for such an important event. They didn't question it.

I tested the speakers three times. Checked the acoustics from every corner of the hall. The clarity was flawless. Every word would carry.

Behind the podium, I installed a secondary activation switch. Small. Recessed into the lower panel where no one would see it unless they knew to look. I tested it twice. The connection was clean.

When I finished, I stood alone in the empty hall. The chairs were arranged in perfect rows. The banners were hung. The stage was set.

I walked out and locked the doors behind me.

---

Two days before the Tribunal, Rory found me in the corridor outside the archives. Hudson was in a meeting with Isaac. The hallway was empty.

She didn't bother with pleasantries.

"Tessa," she said. Her voice was flat. "We should talk."

I stopped. Turned to face her. "Of course."

She crossed her arms. Looked at me with that same condescending expression she'd worn for five years. "I think you need to be realistic about your position here."

I waited.

"Hudson needs a proper heir," she continued. "You can't give him one. Maren can. Maren has. The pack needs stability, and that means accepting what's actually best for Ironveil." She tilted her head. "Your continued role as Luna is... a courtesy. One that could be reconsidered."

I let her words settle. Watched her face. She was so certain. So comfortable.

"Thank you for being honest with me, Rory," I said quietly.

Her expression flickered. Confusion. She'd expected tears. Anger. Collapse.

I gave her nothing.

I walked past her down the corridor. Didn't look back.

Behind me, I heard her exhale—frustrated, unsatisfied, vaguely unsettled.

That night, I described the conversation to Caelan word for word. He listened in silence. When I finished, he said only: "Noted."

---

The night before the Tribunal, I sat alone in my study. The cipher journal was open on the desk. The evidence files were stacked beside it. The recording from the coastal safe house was queued on my phone. The scent-lineage analysis. The healer records. The financial documents.

Every piece in order. Every contingency accounted for.

I closed the journal. Sat in the silence. My wolf stirred—not restless, not grieving. Ready.

I thought of the pup I lost. Let myself see it clearly. The grief was still there. It would always be there. But it wasn't a wound anymore.

It was fuel.

I stood. Turned off the light. Went to bed.

I slept.

In the morning, I dressed in silver.

The gown was simple. Elegant. The fabric caught the light when I moved. I pinned my hair back. Applied minimal makeup. Looked at myself in the mirror.

The woman looking back was calm. Composed. Unshakable.

I went downstairs. Hudson was already in the hall, greeting early arrivals. He saw me and smiled.

"You look beautiful," he said.

I walked to his side. Took his hand. "Thank you."

The guests began to arrive. Alpha Dorian Ashveil. The regional pack leaders. Rival Alphas I recognized from territorial summits. The hall filled. Two hundred wolves. Maybe more.

Then the Lycan Council delegation entered.

Prince Caelan Nighthollow walked in first. His expression was neutral. Professional. Our eyes met for half a second. He gave no acknowledgment.

Behind him, the Lycan King.

The room went silent. Every wolf in the hall lowered their eyes. Hudson stepped forward, bowing his head in respect.

The King's gaze swept the room. Paused on me. Moved on.

I felt my wolf stir. Deep. Insistent.

The ceremony began. Hudson took the podium. Spoke about alliances. About Ironveil's strength. About the future.

I stood at the side of the stage. Hands folded. Expression serene.

Waiting.

Hudson's speech built toward its conclusion. He gestured broadly. "And so, with the support of our allies and the recognition of the Lycan Council, Ironveil enters a new era—"

I stepped forward.

The movement was small. Deliberate. Every eye in the room tracked it.

I reached the podium. Hudson paused. Looked at me. Confusion flickered across his face.

I pressed the hidden switch.

The speakers crackled to life.

Hudson's voice filled the hall. Recorded. Unmistakable.

*"The wolfsbane was necessary. Her wolf was emerging. I couldn't allow that. The pup was—collateral."*

The room froze.

Hudson's face went white. He opened his mouth. No sound came.

I turned to face the assembled wolves. My voice was steady. Clear.

"Five years ago," I said, "Alpha Hudson Barnes poisoned me with concentrated wolfsbane. He murdered our unborn child. He suppressed my wolf to prevent my bloodline from awakening."

I pulled the healer records from inside my gown. Held them up.

"This is the sealed medical file documenting the crime. Signed by the Ironveil healer under Alpha directive."

I set the file on the podium. Looked directly at the Lycan King.

"I invoke Lycan Council authority," I said. "And I demand formal bloodline-scent recognition of the child Alpha Barnes claims as his heir."

The hall erupted. Voices. Movement. Shock rippling through the crowd.

The Lycan King stepped forward. His expression was unreadable. He looked at Hudson. Then at me.

"Bring the child," he said.

Margaret stood frozen near the back. Maren was beside her, holding the baby. Her face was pale. Stricken.

The King walked toward them. The crowd parted.

He reached Maren. Looked down at the baby in her arms.

Then he lifted the child. Brought him close. Inhaled.

The silence was absolute.

The Lycan King's expression shifted. Shock. Recognition.

He opened his mouth to speak.
