Chapter 4

I woke on the ninth day and knew something had changed.

The safe house was silent. Early light came through the window in pale strips, dust floating in the beams. I lay on the floor where I'd collapsed the night before, still half-dressed, my spine aching from another failed shift.

Except this time, the ache felt different.

I sat up slowly. Pressed my palms flat against the floorboards. My wolf stirred inside me — not the violent surge of the past week, but something deeper. Steadier. Like she'd finally settled into the space she was meant to occupy.

I stood. Walked to the window. The trees outside were sharp and clear, every leaf distinct. I could hear a bird three hundred yards away. I could smell the creek beyond the tree line, and the deer that had passed through an hour ago, and something else — something wild and old that I realized, after a moment, was me.

My wolf pressed against my ribs. Not a question this time. An invitation.

I walked outside barefoot. The grass was cold and wet. The sun hadn't cleared the trees yet. I stood in the clearing behind the safe house and let her come up.

The shift was clean.

No trembling. No loss of control. Just bone sliding into new alignment, fur rippling down my spine, my vision sharpening until I could see the individual threads of a spiderweb twenty feet away. My wolf rose beneath me like water filling a space that had always been hollow, and when I looked down at my paws — massive, silver, claws sunk deep into the soft earth — I felt something crack open in my chest that wasn't grief.

It was fury.

I ran.

I didn't plan it. I just moved. The safe house territory was unclaimed land, a narrow strip between pack borders, and I crossed it at full speed. Trees blurred past. The ground disappeared under my paws. My wolf's aura stretched out ahead of me like a wave, and I felt every small animal within a quarter mile freeze and flatten.

This was what I should have been.

Not the small, muted thing I'd carried for four years. Not the wolf that surfaced shyly, like she was apologizing for taking up space. This. This enormous, undeniable presence that made the forest itself go quiet.

I ran until my lungs burned. Until the sun cleared the trees and the cold morning air turned sharp in my throat. Then I stopped at the creek, sides heaving, and looked at my reflection in the water.

Silver fur. Eyes like winter light. A wolf twice the size of any Delta I'd ever seen.

Four years.

Four years of evening tea and Eleanor's folded hands and Cassius looking at me like I was something fragile he'd chosen to protect. Four years of believing my wolf was weak because she barely surfaced. Four years of not knowing that every time I reached for her, there was wolfsbane in my blood keeping her down.

I shifted back. Knelt by the creek in human form, naked and shaking, my hands pressed against the cold stone.

I wasn't twenty anymore. I would never get those years back.

The grief tried to rise. I shoved it down. There would be time for grief later. Right now, I had work to do.

I walked back to the safe house. Wren was waiting on the porch, two mugs of coffee in her hands. She looked at me — still naked, covered in dirt and scratches from the underbrush — and held one out without comment.

I took it. Drank. The coffee was bitter and perfect.

"You ran the perimeter," Wren said. Not a question.

"I needed to know what I could do."

"And?"

I looked at her. "I could've done this four years ago. If they'd let me."

Wren's mouth thinned. She nodded once, sharp and certain. Then she set her mug down and pulled a folder from the bag at her feet.

"There's more," she said.

I went inside. Got dressed. Came back out and sat across from her at the small porch table.

Wren opened the folder. Inside were financial records — Ashborne pack accounts, highlighted in yellow.

"Bryson has been diverting pack resources to Nova's contacts for over a year," she said. Her voice was flat. Professional. "Falsified training allocation records. Funds transferred to neutral-territory accounts that trace back to the same rogue healer who supplied the wolfsbane."

She slid another document across. Scent-marking logs, documented by the bonded intermediary.

"He's been meeting her," Wren continued. "Not full mating sessions. But enough bond-adjacent contact to constitute a formal violation under pack law. Enough that his wolf recognizes her scent before it recognizes mine."

I looked at the logs. At the dates. At the careful, methodical pattern of a man who thought he was being discreet.

"Your case alone—" I started.

Wren cut me off. "Would be buried by the Ashborne hierarchy within a week. I'm a Beta female accusing her mate of bond violations. Without corroboration, without a high-profile anchor, it's my word against his. And his family has been Ashborne leadership for three generations."

She leaned forward. Her eyes were hard.

"Combined with yours," she said, "it cannot be ignored."

I looked at the evidence spread between us. Wolfsbane procurement. Fund transfers. Scent-marking violations. Two packs. Two conspiracies. One architect.

Eleanor.

"Then we file together," I said.

Wren exhaled. It was the first time I'd seen her composure crack, just slightly — a brief, visible relief.

"Together," she agreed.

We spent the rest of the morning building the combined case. Cross-referencing dates. Matching fund transfers to procurement orders. Documenting every point where the Ironveil and Ashborne conspiracies intersected.

By noon, we had a timeline that was undeniable.

By evening, we had a target.

I pulled up the Lycan Council's public schedule on Wren's phone. Dominic Voss was attending a neutral territory summit in three days — a standard diplomatic session, open to allied pack observers.

"He'll be there," I said.

Wren looked at the schedule. Then at me. "You're going to approach him directly."

"I'm not waiting for an appointment."

"Rachel." Wren's voice was careful. "You'll be walking into a room full of allied Alphas. If you approach the Lycan Prince without protocol—"

"I'm not asking for mercy," I said. "I'm filing a formal claim. Mate-bond violation. Biological sabotage. Two packs implicated. I have the evidence. I have the bloodline. And I have the standing."

I looked at her.

"I'm not a refugee, Wren. I'm a claimant."

Wren held my gaze for a long moment. Then she smiled — sharp and cold and satisfied.

"Then let's make sure he knows it," she said.

We packed the dossier. Territorial maps. Procurement records. Fund transfers. Scent-marking logs. Eleanor's transcribed voice. Every piece of evidence we'd built over the past nine days, organized and indexed and undeniable.

Three days.

I looked out the window at the trees, at the territory I'd run this morning at full speed. My wolf stirred inside me, steady and sure.

Let them try to bury this.

Let them try.
