Chapter 2

I found it at 3:47 a.m., buried in the third volume of pack-law archives that hadn't been opened in decades.

The Luna Accord.

My eyes burned from hours of reading by lamplight, but the words on the page were suddenly sharp and clear. I read them once. Twice. A third time to be sure I wasn't hallucinating from exhaustion and rage.

*Any marked, bonded Luna of recognized standing may invoke formal Pack Tribunal before dissolution proceedings. Said invocation supersedes Alpha authority in matters of bond severance and requires assembly of both parties' ranked witnesses. Invocation must be spoken aloud before assembled pack. Alpha tone holds no force during Tribunal proceedings.*

I pressed my thumb against the Luna mark on my neck. It throbbed where Hudson's claws had cracked it, but the bond was still active. Still marked. That made me eligible.

The provision was ancient—written back when Lunas held real power, before centuries of Alphas had slowly eroded the title into decoration. Most modern packs didn't even know it existed. Hudson certainly didn't, or he would never have given me until morning.

I copied the invocation language by hand. The formal phrasing had to be exact. One word wrong and it wouldn't hold.

Then I identified my moment: the Silverfang alliance ceremony. Four days away. Both packs' ranked wolves assembled in one hall. Hudson in full ceremonial regalia, presenting my stolen strategies as his crowning achievement. The Silverfang Alpha watching, ready to formalize the partnership.

Hudson couldn't silence me there. Not without violating pack law in front of an outside Alpha's witness. The structural trap was perfect.

I closed the archive and sat back in my chair. My wolf stirred, clearer than she'd been in years. Not howling anymore. Waiting.

I had four days to prepare. Four days to memorize every word. Four days to make sure I didn't flinch when the moment came.

I intended to use every single one.

The summons came at dawn.

A Beta-delivered note, folded with Hudson's seal. Formal. Impersonal. *My study. 8 a.m. Regarding dissolution terms.*

I read it twice and set it on my desk beside the Luna Accord invocation I'd copied in the dark hours of morning. Then I dressed carefully—not the ceremonial Luna gown, but simple day clothes that wouldn't read as either submission or defiance. I braided my hair. I did not cover the claw marks on my neck.

At exactly eight o'clock, I walked into Hudson's study.

He sat behind his desk, perfectly composed. The morning light through the windows made his office look clean and authoritative. He gestured to the chair across from him like we were having a business meeting.

"Scarlet." His voice was smooth. No trace of last night's violence. "I'm glad you came."

I sat without speaking.

He slid a document across the desk. Multiple pages, neatly formatted. I recognized the dissolution draft immediately.

"I've made this as simple as possible," he said. "Mutual separation. No fault assigned. You'll retain your personal assets and receive a settlement that reflects your years of service to the pack. All very dignified."

I picked up the document and read it. The language was careful, clinical. It framed the dissolution as a natural conclusion to a partnership that had run its course. There was no mention of Fiona. No mention of the pup. No mention of anything that had actually happened.

"The pack has already accepted the transition," Hudson continued. "Fiona's presence has been well received. The alliance announcement is scheduled for the ceremony in four days. A delayed dissolution would only create unnecessary complications."

He leaned forward slightly, his expression concerned and reasonable. "I know last night was difficult. But dragging this out won't help either of us. Sign now, leave quietly, and you'll be remembered as a Luna who served with grace. Refuse, and you'll be the obstacle everyone blames when the alliance falls apart."

I set the document down without a word.

Hudson's jaw tightened. Just barely. "Scarlet—"

"I'll consider it," I said. My voice was calm. Flat. I met his eyes directly. "You said I had until morning. I'm taking the time you offered."

Something flickered behind his gaze. Not quite alarm. Irritation, maybe. He wasn't used to me not folding immediately.

"There's nothing to consider," he said. His tone sharpened slightly. "This is the best outcome for everyone."

"Then it will still be the best outcome tomorrow." I stood. "Or the day after."

I walked out before he could respond.

His voice followed me into the hallway, controlled but edged. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

I didn't look back.

Fiona sat in my chair at lunch.

The pack's communal dining hall was full—Deltas, Gammas, lower-ranked wolves gathering for the midday meal. I stood in the doorway and watched her settle into the seat at the head table that had been mine for three years. She wore the Luna shawl again, draped casually over her shoulders like it had always belonged to her.

No one said anything.

A Delta glanced at her, then at me, then down at his plate. An Omega who had served me breakfast every morning for two years kept her eyes lowered and refilled Fiona's water glass without being asked. Beta Marcus sat two seats down, eating calmly, as though nothing unusual was happening.

Fiona caught my eye across the hall. She didn't smile. Didn't gloat. She just looked at me with the calm certainty of someone who had already won.

I turned and walked to the kitchens.

I didn't eat the meal the pack cooks had prepared. I made a simple sandwich from ingredients I'd bought myself that morning—bread from the human town, cheese I'd unwrapped in front of the vendor, vegetables I'd washed twice. I ate it standing at the counter, alone.

The Omega who usually prepped my meals watched me from across the kitchen, confused.

"Luna?" she asked quietly. "Is something wrong with the food?"

"No," I said. "Just a preference."

I didn't explain further.

That night, I felt it.

The fog in my mind—thick and suffocating for as long as I could remember—thinned. Not dramatically. Not all at once. But perceptibly.

My wolf stirred. Not the muffled, drowning sensation I'd lived with for years. Something sharper. Clearer. She pressed against the inside of my skull like she was testing a door she'd forgotten was there.

I sat on the edge of my bed and pressed both hands against my temples, breathing slowly.

The wolfsbane was clearing.

Forty-eight hours without pack-prepared food, and my body was already purging the poison Hudson had fed me for twenty-eight months.

I closed my eyes and let my wolf push forward. She was still weak—years of suppression couldn't be undone in two days—but she was there. Awake. Angry.

Waiting.

I opened the drawer beside my bed and pulled out the Luna Accord invocation I'd copied. I read it again in the dim light, mouthing the words silently.

Four days.

I just needed four more days.
