Chapter 3

I gave myself twelve minutes.

That was the deal I made with myself in the florist's parking lot, before I started the car. Twelve minutes in the nursing home parking lot to fall apart, and then I was done. I pulled in, cut the engine, and let it happen — the kind of crying that doesn't make any sound, just pressure behind the eyes and a tightness in the chest that has nowhere to go. My wolf was still in that small, dark, quiet place she'd retreated to. I didn't try to reach her.

Pale lilies. Months of this.

I pressed the heels of my hands against my eyes and breathed.

The chamomile tea was on the passenger seat, still warm in its paper cup. I'd picked it up from the diner on the way — the same diner, the same order, every week without exception. My mother doesn't know what it is anymore. She doesn't know who brings it. But she drinks it, and the nurses say she's calmer on the days I come, and that has to be enough. That has always been enough.

At twelve minutes exactly, I wiped my face with the back of my hand, checked the mirror once, and got out of the car.

---

My mother was having a good day, which meant she was having a sharp day. She looked at me when I came in and said, with complete authority, 'You're late.'

'I know,' I said. 'I'm sorry.'

'The other girl was here earlier.' She accepted the tea without looking at it, both hands wrapped around the cup. 'The pretty one. I didn't like her.'

I went very still.

'What did she look like?' I asked, keeping my voice easy.

My mother considered this with the focused seriousness she brings to everything on her good days. 'Too put-together,' she said finally. 'The kind of put-together that means something's wrong underneath.' She took a sip of tea. 'I told her to empty my bedpan.'

I sat down in the chair beside her bed.

'Did she?' I asked.

'She left.' My mother sounded satisfied. 'Good riddance.'

I stayed for an hour. I held her hand. I listened to her talk about a garden she used to have, a dog she'd loved before I was born, a dress she'd worn to a dance when she was nineteen. The fog came back in slowly, the way it always does, and by the time I left she was looking at me with those soft, unfocused eyes again, not quite sure who I was.

'You're a nice girl,' she told me at the door.

'Thank you,' I said. 'So are you.'

I didn't cry again until I was back in the car. That one I hadn't budgeted for, so I gave it five minutes and called it even.

---

Over the next three days, I learned Enzo's pattern.

Pack training in the morning — the GPS dot moving in tight loops across the eastern grounds, the way it always did on drill days. The florist on Clement Street in the afternoon, regular as a standing appointment. Then either the pack house on the north end of the territory or the human town, depending on the day.

I cross-referenced the hotel address — the Harrow, the waterfront location where I'd watched him walk through the glass doors — against every Moonveil satellite location I could find through pack channels. Nothing matched. The booking was private. Cash. No trail.

I added it to the Records folder and kept watching.

On the fourth day, the dot moved to an address I recognized: the Meridian, an outdoor shopping center on the edge of the human town, the kind of place with string lights and a wine bar and restaurants that charge forty dollars for pasta. I'd been there twice with Enzo, early in our mating, when we were still learning each other's tastes and everything felt like a discovery.

I was in my car before I'd made a conscious decision to move.

---

I found them through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a corner restaurant called Alora.

I didn't go inside. I didn't need to. The windows were generous and the lighting was warm and I could see the corner table clearly from the walkway outside — Enzo with his back to the wall, the way Alphas always sit, and Lorelei across from him, leaning forward with her elbows on the table and her dark hair loose tonight, different from the pinned-back precision of the nursing home.

I stood at an angle, half-behind a planter box, and I breathed.

His scent reached me even through the glass — faint, the way it had been for weeks, that cedar-and-smoke signature I'd been able to track from across a room for seven years now barely registering at this distance. Underneath it, threaded through it, Lorelei's floral-sharp scent. The same one I'd been finding on his collar. The same one that had been living in my car on the drive home from the nursing home, clinging to the memory of an unmarked vial.

I watched them.

Lorelei was talking. Her hands moved when she spoke — precise, emphatic gestures, the kind that go with words like protocol and timeline and we don't have much time. Enzo's jaw was tight. His hands were flat on the table, not reaching for anything, not touching her. His eyes were on her face with an expression I recognized — the one he gets when he's listening to something he doesn't want to hear but has already decided he has to.

They were not touching.

I waited for the moment I'd been bracing for — a hand across the table, a look that lasted too long, the particular body language of two people who have been intimate and are pretending they haven't. I waited for the thing that would make this simple.

It didn't come.

Lorelei spoke. Enzo listened. His jaw worked once, like he was swallowing something back. He said something short — I couldn't read his lips through the glass — and she sat back slightly, her expression shifting into something I couldn't name from this distance. Not satisfaction. Not relief. Something more complicated than either.

They left together through the restaurant's front door and parted on the walkway outside.

No embrace. No touch. No pause, no backward glance, no lingering in each other's scent the way mated wolves do, the way any two wolves do when they don't want to leave. Lorelei walked toward the parking structure. Enzo walked toward the lot where he'd left the SUV. Two people going in two directions, as clean and final as a door closing.

I stood behind the planter box and watched him go.

I had come here expecting proof of an affair. Something I could name, something I could hold up and say this, this is the thing, this is what it is. Instead I had a corner table and a tight jaw and two people who had not touched each other once in the forty minutes I'd been watching.

I didn't know what to do with that.

Certainty, I could have worked with. Certainty has edges. You can build something on the edges of certainty — anger, action, a decision made and held.

This was something else. This was Enzo's wolf going quiet for weeks, his scent fading like a candle burning low, his body losing weight in ways that no Alpha's body should. This was Lorelei Burke with her medical precision and her Moonveil backing and her unmarked vials, leaning across a restaurant table with the urgency of someone running out of time.

This was a question I didn't have an answer to yet.

I pressed two fingers to the mate mark on my neck — already doing it before I caught myself — and I stood in the string-lit walkway of the Meridian while the human town moved around me, indifferent and unhurried, and I tried to figure out what I was actually looking at.

I couldn't.

Not yet.

But I was going to.
