Chapter 4

Rowan arrived that evening without being summoned.

I heard his footsteps in the corridor—measured, deliberate, different from the guards' rotation rhythm. The door opened. He stepped inside and closed it behind him with a quiet click that felt final.

He didn't pretend this was official business. No formal greeting. No Alpha's errand. He just stood there with his shoulders tight and his hands loose at his sides, holding himself like a man who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

"Luna," he said quietly.

I waited. My fingers were pressed against the scar on my neck—the old habit, except now there was only hollow tissue where the mark used to be. I didn't move my hand. Let him see it.

Rowan's eyes tracked the gesture. His jaw tightened. When he spoke again, his voice was lower, rougher around the edges.

"I tried to reach the Alpha through the pack mind-link during the corridor attack."

I went very still.

"I heard Dara screaming from two floors above," he continued. "Heard the rogues. I tried to alert Lennox immediately." He paused. His hands flexed once at his sides. "I received no response."

The air in the room felt thin. I kept my breathing even, my expression neutral, but something cold and precise was sliding into place behind my ribs.

"You heard me," I said. Not a question.

Rowan's eyes met mine for the first time since he'd entered. "The entire west wing heard you, Luna. You screamed through the bond. We all felt it."

I let the silence stretch. Counted three seconds. Then I asked, very quietly: "And the Alpha?"

"Silent," Rowan said. "Completely silent. His mind-link was open—I could feel the connection—but he didn't respond. Not to me. Not to anyone."

I pressed my fingers harder against the scar. The tissue was numb, dead nerve endings that would never carry sensation again. "You've been carrying this for weeks."

"Yes."

"Why are you telling me now?"

Rowan was quiet for a moment. When he answered, his voice had lost its careful modulation. It was just tired. "Because I watched you stand at his left for ten years. I watched you manage every political crisis this pack has faced. And I watched him force you to bare your neck to Megan Fisher at your own birthday banquet." He paused. "And then I heard you screaming, and I heard him do nothing."

I looked at him. Beta Rowan Ashby. Eight years as Lennox's second-in-command. Loyal, competent, the kind of wolf who followed orders without question because the hierarchy was the hierarchy and Alphas were Alphas.

Except he was standing in my room without permission, telling me things that could end his career.

I shifted forward slightly on the cot. Kept my voice level. "What do you need from me, Rowan?"

He blinked. Like the question had surprised him. "I'm not here for—"

"Yes, you are," I said. "You didn't come here to confess. You came here because you've made a decision and you need to know what happens next."

Rowan's shoulders dropped half an inch. The tension bled out of him all at once, replaced by something that looked like relief.

I asked the only question that mattered: "Are you willing to say that to the Lycan Council?"

His wolf went quiet in his chest. I could feel it—the sudden stillness of an animal that has just realized the ground beneath it has shifted. He stood there for a long moment, his breathing careful and measured.

Then he nodded once.

I felt something crack open in my chest. Not my wolf—she was still silent, still waiting. But something else. The first real confirmation that I wasn't walking into the tribunal alone.

"Then go back to your post," I said quietly. "Don't change anything. Don't let him know you've been here."

Rowan's eyes searched my face. "What are you planning?"

I didn't answer. Just looked at him until he understood that I wasn't going to.

He nodded again. Turned toward the door. Then stopped with his hand on the handle and looked back.

"He needed you," Rowan said. "His bloodline was always fragile. Everyone knew it. But you—" He gestured vaguely at the space between us. "You held the pack together. You held him together. And he—"

He didn't finish. Didn't need to.

I said, very quietly: "I know."

Rowan left. The door clicked shut behind him.

I sat in the silence and pressed two fingers against the hollow scar on my neck. Counted down. Eleven days until my wolf either woke or died. Thirteen until the Council arrived.

And now I had the Alpha's own Beta willing to testify that Lennox had heard me screaming and done nothing.

I lay back on the cot and stared at the ceiling. My hands were shaking slightly—not from fear, but from the effort of holding myself together while the pieces finally started falling into place.

Lennox thought he had two weeks to cement Avery's position and bury the branding under external-threat paperwork.

He had no idea the tribunal was already in motion. And he had no idea his own second-in-command had just handed me the one piece of testimony that would make his cover-up irreparable.

I closed my eyes. Let myself feel it for just a moment—the cold, precise weight of certainty settling into my bones.

Then I set it aside. Because certainty wasn't a tool yet.

But it would be.
