Chapter 3

Jase found me in the supply depot three days after Corran Vale walked out.

I was counting inventory. Wolfsbane tea, silver-laced rope, the small glass vials of scent suppressant we kept for border patrols. My clipboard was balanced on a stack of crates. My handwriting was neat. Precise. The same handwriting that had built every alliance file in the records room.

He stood in the doorway for a moment before he spoke. "Vienna."

I did not look up. "Beta."

"I need you to see something."

I set down my pen. I turned. His face was carefully neutral, but his jaw was tight. He was holding a folder.

"The secondary archive," he said quietly. "I pulled the original Thornridge files. Cross-referenced them against the current versions."

I waited.

"The alterations were made weeks after your demotion. After you lost archive access entirely." He opened the folder. Showed me the timestamp logs. The scent-seal signatures. The version histories that told the story I already knew. "You couldn't have done this."

I looked at the documents. At the proof laid out in black ink and wax residue. At the evidence that should have mattered.

"Does he know?" I asked.

Jase's silence was answer enough.

"I prepared a report," he said finally. "I submitted it yesterday morning."

"And?"

"He hasn't read it. He's with Leanna."

I nodded. I picked up my pen. I went back to counting inventory.

Jase stood there for another moment. Then he left without another word.

The wolfsbane tea smelled bitter. I made a note on my clipboard. Fifty-three vials. Down two from last week.

That evening I was pushing a supply cart through the west corridor when I heard voices ahead. Urgent. Female. Leanna's voice, pitched just loud enough to carry.

"Maddox, please—I need you—"

I slowed. The cart's wheels made a soft squeak on the polished floor.

Ahead, Maddox's door was open. Leanna stood in the threshold, one hand pressed to her stomach, her face flushed. She was wearing something thin and pale. Her scent bloomed thick through the hallway—jasmine and vanilla and something hot underneath, unmistakable.

A fabricated heat.

I had seen it done before. Certain herbs could mimic the scent signature. Certain teas could trigger the physical symptoms. It was not illegal. It was just... tactical.

Maddox stepped into the doorway. His face was tight. Concerned. His wolf would be going feral with the need to respond, to protect, to claim. Fated mates did that. Biology overrode everything else.

"Inside," he said, his voice rough. He guided her back into his quarters. The door closed behind them.

Half the pack house had heard. Wolves lingered in doorways, watching. Whispering. Confirming what everyone already knew: Leanna was his real mate. Vienna had been the mistake.

I stood there with my hands on the supply cart. The dead mark on my neck stayed cold. No phantom warmth. No echo of a bond that had ever been real.

I pushed the cart forward. The wheels squeaked. I kept walking.

Behind me, someone laughed softly. I did not turn around.

The summons came the next morning.

I was in the east wing when Genesis found me. Her face was pale. "Maddox wants you in the common room. Now."

I set down the mop. I wiped my hands on my jeans. "Did he say why?"

"No. But Jase is there. And the Gamma. And Leanna."

I nodded. I followed her down the corridor.

The common room was full. Not the entire pack, but enough. Senior wolves lined the walls. Jase stood to the left of the platform, his face unreadable. The Gamma—Rhett, a man I had trained in border tactics two summers ago—stood on the right.

Maddox sat in the Alpha's chair. Leanna stood beside him, one hand resting lightly on the back of his seat.

I walked to the center of the room. I stopped. I waited.

Maddox looked at me. His eyes were hard. "The Thornridge treaty has been suspended. Alliance documents were tampered with. Files altered. Scent-seals broken."

I said nothing.

"You had access to those files," he continued. "You managed that alliance for two years. You knew every detail."

"I did," I said evenly.

"And after the rejection, you were angry."

It was not a question. I did not answer it.

Leanna's voice was soft. Careful. "Maddox, I know this is hard. But we have to consider—"

"I didn't alter the files," I said.

Maddox leaned forward. "Then explain how they were changed."

"I can't. I lost archive access when I was demoted. The timestamps prove that."

"Timestamps can be faked."

"Not scent-seals. Not version logs in the secondary archive."

His jaw tightened. "You're saying someone else did this."

"I'm saying I didn't."

"Who, then? Who else would have reason to sabotage an alliance I built?"

I looked at him. At the man who had marked me and whispered another woman's name. At the Alpha who had stripped my rank and handed my quarters to the woman now standing beside his chair.

I said nothing.

Maddox stood. His aura pulsed outward, a wave of dominance that made every wolf in the room tense. "Confess."

I met his eyes. "I have nothing to confess."

His voice dropped. Deepened. The Alpha tone slammed into the room like a physical force.

"Confess."

It hit me in the chest. My knees buckled. I went down hard, palms flat on the floor, my spine bowing under the weight of a command I could not resist. My jaw locked. My throat closed. I could not speak. Could not move. Could not do anything but kneel there with my head forced down and my body screaming against the pressure.

The room was silent.

Jase's voice, quiet and flat: "Alpha, the report—"

"Not now," Maddox said.

At the door, Genesis struggled against two Delta wolves holding her back. Her face was white. Her eyes were on me.

Maddox took a step closer. His boots stopped inches from my hands. "I gave you everything. I marked you. I trusted you. And you repay me with jealousy and sabotage."

I could not answer. The Alpha tone held me pinned like a butterfly under glass.

Inside my chest, where my wolf had been silent for days, something stirred.

Not a flicker. Not a breath.

A crack.
