Chapter 2

Grandfather blew out the lamp.

The cabin vanished into darkness.

Another step sounded outside, slow and deliberate. Not an animal. A man testing each board of the porch with his weight.

Lucian pushed himself upright on the cot.

“You’ll tear the stitches,” I whispered.

“Better mine than your throat.”

He swung his feet to the floor. His face had gone gray, but his hand was steady when he drew the narrow blade hidden inside his boot.

Grandfather took position beside the door with the shotgun. I reached for the small clay jar on the medicine shelf.

Three knocks struck the wood.

“Ridge patrol,” a man called. “Open up.”

“There is no ridge patrol in neutral territory,” Grandfather answered.

Silence.

Then the latch lifted from the outside.

I threw the jar into the hearth.

Dried pepperroot burst across the coals. A choking cloud billowed through the room just as the door slammed inward. The intruder stumbled through wearing dark leather and a scarf over his face. His eyes watered instantly.

Lucian hit him before Grandfather could fire.

They crashed against the table. The intruder raked claws across Lucian’s bandage, reopening the wound, but Lucian trapped the man’s wrist and drove the boot knife through his sleeve into the tabletop.

“Who hired you?” Lucian demanded.

The man snarled, twisted free of his coat, and dove through the open door. Grandfather fired over his shoulder. Buckshot shredded the porch rail as the intruder shifted midstride and disappeared into the trees on four gray legs.

Lucian made it one step after him.

Then his knees gave out.

I caught him under the arm. “Brilliant. You saved us the trouble of changing a clean bandage.”

“He saw my face.”

“He already knew you were here.” I forced him back onto the cot. “Sit down.”

For once, he obeyed.

At first light, we found blood on the porch, a torn strip of black leather, and no body. There was no crest on the coat. The stitching, however, was military—tight, waxed, built for hard use.

Lucian studied it for a long moment.

“Your attacker?” I asked.

“One of them.”

“Who are they?”

His jaw hardened. “Men who will kill anyone they think helped me.”

Grandfather shoved the ruined door back onto its hinges. “Then you leave today.”

“He can barely stand,” I said.

“I can stand.” Lucian rose, proved the claim for nearly three seconds, and caught the table before he fell.

Grandfather pointed at him. “Tomorrow.”

Lucian looked as if he wanted to argue, but blood had already begun to seep through the fresh linen.

He stayed three more days.

He treated the time like a debt accumulating interest.

By noon on the first day, he had repaired the broken latch. The next morning, I woke to the thud of an axe and found him at the woodpile, bare-chested despite the cold, splitting pine with his ribs tightly bound.

“Put it down,” I said.

“Three logs.”

“Now.”

He lowered the axe.

That was how it went. Lucian spoke little, noticed everything, and refused to be idle. He patched two roof shingles, hauled water, reset a leaning fence post, and sharpened every blade in the cabin. When Grandfather complained, Lucian found work farther from the windows.

“He behaves like a man preparing to vanish,” Grandfather muttered on the third evening.

Lucian sat across the room, cleaning mud from his boots. “I can hear you.”

“Good. Saves me repeating myself.”

I hid a smile in my cup.

At supper, Grandfather pushed a heel of bread toward him. “You have family?”

“A sister.” Lucian’s expression softened by a fraction. “Valerie.”

“Parents?”

“Dead since I was five.”

“I’m sorry,” I said.

He met my eyes. “So am I.”

No performance. No plea for sympathy. Jason had used his supposed amnesia like a leash, drawing comfort from me whenever I asked a question he didn’t want to answer. Lucian guarded his history, but at least he didn’t pretend it was gone.

Later, I changed his dressing beside the hearth. The wound had closed to an angry red seam. His back bore older scars—claw marks, a knife cut, the pale ring left by a garrote.

“You collect enemies,” I said.

“Occupational hazard.”

“And what is your occupation?”

He glanced over his shoulder. “Staying alive.”

“That answer might impress someone less suspicious.”

A brief smile touched his mouth and disappeared. “You should be suspicious.”

I spread comfrey salve along the stitches. His muscles tightened beneath my fingertips.

“Does that hurt?”

“No.”

“Then stop trying to turn your spine into a steel rod.”

“I’m trying not to move.”

The heat of him soaked through my palm. For a moment, the room seemed too small—the low fire, his clean pine scent, the quiet rasp of his breathing.

I stepped back first.

“You’re healing fast,” I said. “You can travel tomorrow.”

His gaze lingered on me. “I know.”

At dawn, a coded pulse sounded from the iron pendant on the table: two short vibrations, a pause, then three more. Lucian closed his fist around it.

“My people,” he said. “They’re close.”

Grandfather leaned against his walking stick. “You have people now?”

“I always did.”

The admission should have angered me. Instead, I remembered him on the table, silver beside his lung and a killer at our door. Whatever rank he held had not protected him.

Lucian fastened his coat and set a small purse on the table.

Grandfather slid it back. “No.”

“It covers the medicine.”

“We don’t sell mercy.”

“Then take my crest.” Lucian removed the twin-hawk pendant. “Show it at the Iron Ridge post if you ever need protection.”

“We don’t want a favor that turns into a chain.”

Lucian looked at him for a long moment, then put the pendant away. “Understood.”

I walked him to the creek path. Frost silvered the grass, and mist wound between the pines.

“Use the eastern trail,” I said. “Bloodfang watches the north road.”

“Freya.”

Something in his tone stopped me.

He reached for my wrist, then seemed to remember how he had grabbed me the first night. His hand fell before touching me.

“I will come back when it is safe.”

The promise struck an old bruise.

“Don’t ask me to wait.”

“I wasn’t going to.” His eyes held mine. “Live your life. Lock your door. If danger comes before I do, use the pendant at the Iron Ridge post.”

“That sounds dangerously close to concern.”

“It is.”

He turned and disappeared into the morning fog.

I told myself the clearing felt larger without him, not emptier.

I almost believed it.

Near sunset, three black trucks climbed the ridge road and stopped outside our gate. Bloodfang crests gleamed on the doors.

Jason Caldwell stepped from the lead vehicle wearing a tailored charcoal coat and the smile of a man who had never heard the word no.
