Chapter 8

POV: Wren

Another month passed before I returned to the gates.

The exiles behind me filled the frozen plain. They had come from caves, ruined villages, prison mines, and camps the Council had tried to erase. Nearly three thousand wolves now marched beneath my Blood Moon. Not soldiers when I found them. Survivors. I had taught them formations, supply lines, and how to break silver wards without sacrificing the wolf who touched them first.

They had taught me what Alaric's law had cost.

Liam stood on the rampart above the main gate. I remembered him from the night of my exile. He had watched the guards throw me into the snow and kept his face blank.

Now his bow shook in his hand.

"Open the gates," I called.

"Wren, I have orders."

"So did the hunters who killed Chloe and Ben. Choose better."

A younger guard fired.

The silver arrow crossed half the distance before my mist swallowed it. Metal became ash. The ash blew back across the wall and coated the archer's face.

Liam struck the bow from the boy's hands. Then he looked down at me.

"If I open them, Marrok will execute my family."

"If you don't, there will be no wall left to protect them."

He closed his eyes.

The gate mechanism groaned. Chains moved inside the towers, but the doors opened only a foot before a second ward flared across them. Marrok's work. A seal keyed to the Council rather than the High Alpha.

I lifted my palm.

The ward split.

The gates did not swing open. They exploded inward, iron and silver tearing from the stone in two massive sheets. My army roared. I raised one hand, and the sound stopped.

"No civilians," I said. "No pups. No homes. Anyone who drops a weapon lives. We came for the Council."

The order passed through the ranks.

I walked into the courtyard alone.

It looked smaller than memory. The fountain where I had played as a child still ran. My tower window was dark. The medical bay stood across the yard, and for one brutal instant I felt Alaric's hand around my wrist, spreading salve over the burn while pretending his pulse was not racing.

I cut the memory off.

The great hall doors opened.

Marrok emerged with six Elders and a line of guards. Sarah stood among the nobles behind them in white, still dressed like a Luna waiting for a crown.

"Devourer," Marrok shouted. "By authority of the Council, stand down."

I laughed.

"You sent men into the wasteland wearing Alaric's crest. You murdered exiles who never threatened this pack. Your authority ended in a cave full of bodies."

"Archers!"

A dozen arrows rose.

I let them come.

The Devourer opened her mouth inside me. Every arrow turned black, reversed, and buried itself in the flagstones at the archers' feet. My mist wrapped their wrists and stripped the weapons away without taking their lives.

"Anyone else?"

No one moved.

I pressed my power down.

Marrok and the Elders hit their knees. The nobles followed. Sarah gasped as her white skirts sank into the dust. Guards backed away from their swords.

I stopped in front of Marrok.

"I could eat your soul."

His lips peeled back. "Monster."

"You made the word sound like an invitation."

I crouched, close enough to hear his heart stagger. "But death would let you miss what comes next. You are going to watch the wolves you discarded walk through these doors. You are going to hear every name your hunters erased. Then you are going to answer for them."

He tried to spit at me. The mist closed around his throat before he could.

Still, the victory felt hollow.

Alaric was not there.

I had imagined this moment through every freezing night. I had pictured him meeting me with a sword, with an apology, with that unbearable hunger he always buried beneath duty. I had promised myself I wanted only his defeat.

My body knew I was lying.

A side door opened.

Alaric stepped into the torchlight.

He wore black military dress. His white-blond hair was tied back. His face was the same controlled mask that had watched me bleed on the great hall floor.

His eyes were not.

They looked ruined. A month of sleeplessness lived beneath them. His cheeks were sharper. The man who had once seemed carved from winter now looked like winter had eaten him alive.

He drew his silver sword.

The same blade that had removed my crest.

"Wren."

My name broke in his mouth.

I crossed the hall before the torch flames moved. The Devourer carried me through the kneeling crowd until I stood close enough to smell snow, pine, and the grief he had tried to hide from the world.

My hand closed beneath his jaw.

"Hello, Guardian."

His breath caught.

"The stray survived," I said. "The curse learned to command an army. And the monster you threw away has come home."

"You should not have come back."

The words hurt more than the wasteland cold.

I smiled anyway. "Still protecting me with cruelty? You need a new trick."

His free hand caught my hip. The movement was instinctive, possessive, and immediately regretted. His fingers tightened once before he tried to pull away.

I did not let him.

I seized his sword hand and turned the point toward my chest. The blade rested over my heart. I wore white because I wanted him to see every drop if he chose the pack again.

"Wren, stop."

"No." I pressed forward until the tip broke skin. "You do not get to exile me twice. You do not get to hide behind Marrok, the Council, or the terrified wolves watching us."

His hand began to shake.

"Tell them why you cut me loose," I whispered. "Tell them why you drank poison. Tell them why the Blood Pool burned your back for years."

"Please."

"Say you love me."

The hall fell silent.

I pushed the sword deeper. Warm blood slid beneath the white fabric.

"Say it in front of your pack, Alaric. Or finish what you started."

His gold eyes filled with something he had denied me for six years.

He opened his mouth.

I rushed to the precinct, trembling as I swiped my father’s emergency credit card for five thousand dollars, only to watch Liam walk out and head straight for another woman. He had landed in a cell because he’d started a brawl to protect Jade—a girl with pink hair and a jagged attitude—while I was just the "best friend" he called to clean up his mess. In the backseat of the cab I paid for, I watched the man I loved pull her into his lap, treating me like an invisible chauffeur. When I finally demanded the truth, he didn't apologize; he reminded me that our families were tied by a multi-million dollar merger and that I was "like a sister" to him. My own mother echoed his coldness, telling me to stop being dramatic because our family was secretly bankrupt and we needed the Sterling money to survive. I spent years being his "good girl," even recording a fake video for the press claiming he was a hero who fought to defend my honor. But the illusion shattered when I saw the photos of him with Jade on my birthday—the same night he told me he was working late to secure our future. "I love you, Zoe. Like I love my dog. You’re loyal, but you’re boring." I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was his shield. He used the trauma of the day he "saved" my life to keep me in his debt, never realizing that the chains of gratitude had finally snapped. As the Sterling empire began to crumble under a sudden leak of scandals, I didn't run back to Liam. Instead, I looked at the encrypted message from his dangerous, outcast brother, Julian, who had been waiting in the shadows. He didn't just offer me a way out; he offered to buy my family's debt and claim me as the collateral.
