Chapter 2

POV: Wren

The medical bay smelled of sulfur, wet stone, and Alaric.

He had carried me there without calling for a healer. That alone told me how dangerous the scars on his back were. He would rather treat a sacred burn himself than let anyone see what the Blood Pool had done to both of us.

“Sit.”

His shirt hung in torn strips. Water dripped from his hair and darkened the floor around his boots. He crossed to a cabinet, removed a clay jar, and opened it with hands that were almost steady.

My arm was not.

The new brand burned from shoulder to elbow. Steam curled from the blisters whenever I moved. I sat on the stone bench and held the ruined sleeve away from my skin.

“Give me your arm.”

His fingers closed around my wrist. The grip was controlled, almost clinical, but his pulse hammered against my skin.

The salve was cold. His touch was not.

He spread the gray paste over the burn with slow, careful strokes. Each pass soothed the wound and sent a different kind of heat through me. I bit my cheek until I tasted blood.

“Look at me,” I said.

He kept his attention on the brand.

“Alaric.”

Nothing.

I caught his wrist and pressed his palm against my chest. My heartbeat slammed beneath the wet velvet.

“Feel that? That is what you do to me every time you enter a room. Every time you call me a duty. Every time you pretend I’m the only one burning.”

His fingers flexed once over the curve of my breast. Then he tore his hand away.

“Your back,” I said. “How long have you been going into that pool?”

“You misunderstood what you saw.”

“Those scars match mine.”

He rose so quickly that the stool behind him struck the floor.

“You don’t know what they mean.”

“I know you lied.” I stood too. Pain dragged at my arm, but anger kept me upright. “You told me I was a stray, then jumped after me without taking off your boots. You have been burning for years, and you still expect me to believe I mean nothing.”

His face closed.

I hated that mask. I hated how much I wanted to break it.

“You’re a coward,” I said. “You would rather let both of us suffer than admit you want me.”

He pinned me against the wall.

One hand caught my jaw. The other struck the marble beside my head. The crack echoed through the room.

“Do you think this is only about what I want?” His voice sounded barely human. “The Council watches you. They have watched you since the night I brought you here. If they learn what the pool revealed, they will accuse you of corrupting your guardian.”

“I didn’t corrupt you.”

“They won’t care.”

His scent filled the room, snow and pine sharpened by fury. His body held mine in place, but his grip never became cruel. Even now, even shaking with restraint, he measured his strength around me.

“They’ll call you a temptress,” he said. “A curse-bearer. They’ll put you before a purity tribunal and burn you before sunrise.”

“Then stand beside me.”

“You’ll die.”

“I’m already disappearing in that tower.” My voice cracked. “You decide where I go, who speaks to me, who can touch me. You say it is protection, but it feels like a slow burial.”

His hand softened against my jaw.

For one heartbeat, the man beneath the title looked at me.

Then his eyes dropped to my mouth.

I pressed my thighs together. His gaze followed the movement. Gold spread through his irises.

“I want you,” I whispered. “I want your scent on me so no one can pretend they do not know. I want you to stop treating love like a disease.”

“Wren.”

My name sounded like a plea.

“Claim me.”

His forehead touched mine. His breath came fast. The sharp edge of a canine grazed his lower lip as his wolf pressed toward the surface.

“I am trying to keep you alive.”

“Then let me choose what my life is worth.”

The space between our mouths vanished.

Three heavy knocks struck the iron door.

Alaric moved away before the third echo died.

“High Alpha.” Elder Marrok’s voice carried through the metal. “The Blood Pool boiled at midnight. The eastern wards recorded a forbidden surge. The Council demands an explanation.”

Alaric’s expression changed at once. Hunger disappeared behind command.

“Remain here,” he ordered.

“Do not lock me in again.”

He reached the door, then paused without turning.

“Cover the brand. Speak to no one. Until I know what the Council sensed, you do not leave this room.”

“That is still a cage.”

“It is the only one I can defend.”

The answer was so quiet I almost missed it.

He opened the door. Marrok stood beyond it in dark ceremonial robes, his narrow eyes fixed on the water dripping from Alaric’s clothes.

The Elder glanced past him and saw me.

His gaze settled on my exposed shoulder.

Alaric shifted, blocking the view.

“The pool reacted to a failed ward in the terrace railing,” he said. “I went in after her. Nothing more.”

Marrok smiled without warmth. “The pool has never boiled for broken iron.”

“I will address the Council in the great hall.”

“You will. And the girl will remain available for questioning.”

Alaric stepped into the corridor and pulled the door shut.

The lock clicked.

I stood alone with the dried salve on my arm and his unfinished kiss burning on my mouth.

Rage came first.

Then pain.

A pulse opened beneath my ribs. It was deeper than my heartbeat and far older than my body. Cold power poured through my veins. I bent over the treatment table as a growl scraped its way out of my throat.

A polished silver tray reflected my face.

My eyes had turned red.

Not amber. Not wolf-gold. Red as a blood eclipse.

My canines lengthened. A second voice moved beneath my own, vast and hungry. Memory surfaced with it: whispers behind locked doors, Alaric drawing symbols over my sleeping body, Elders calling me an extinction-born child.

I had no ordinary wolf.

Something else lived inside me.

A Devourer.

The name arrived whole, as if I had always known it.

The creature pressed against whatever had kept it sleeping for eighteen years. The door’s silver ward glowed in answer, and the power inside me reached toward it with interest.

I lifted my branded arm.

The ward went black.

“You want to save me, Alaric?” My doubled voice filled the empty room. “Then stop pushing me away.”

The red in my eyes brightened.

“Because I am done staying in the cage.”

At 3:12 AM, a call from the NYPD shattered the silence of my dorm. My childhood sweetheart and the city’s golden heir, Liam Sterling, was in custody and needed me to bail him out. I rushed to the precinct, trembling as I swiped my father’s emergency credit card for five thousand dollars, only to watch Liam walk out and head straight for another woman. He had landed in a cell because he’d started a brawl to protect Jade—a girl with pink hair and a jagged attitude—while I was just the "best friend" he called to clean up his mess. In the backseat of the cab I paid for, I watched the man I loved pull her into his lap, treating me like an invisible chauffeur. When I finally demanded the truth, he didn't apologize; he reminded me that our families were tied by a multi-million dollar merger and that I was "like a sister" to him. My own mother echoed his coldness, telling me to stop being dramatic because our family was secretly bankrupt and we needed the Sterling money to survive. I spent years being his "good girl," even recording a fake video for the press claiming he was a hero who fought to defend my honor. But the illusion shattered when I saw the photos of him with Jade on my birthday—the same night he told me he was working late to secure our future. "I love you, Zoe. Like I love my dog. You’re loyal, but you’re boring." I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was his shield. He used the trauma of the day he "saved" my life to keep me in his debt, never realizing that the chains of gratitude had finally snapped. As the Sterling empire began to crumble under a sudden leak of scandals, I didn't run back to Liam. Instead, I looked at the encrypted message from his dangerous, outcast brother, Julian, who had been waiting in the shadows.
