Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 p.m. on the night I was supposed to be sealed to him forever.

I felt it happen. Not metaphorically. Physically. The mark on my neck went ice-cold first—like someone had pressed a frozen coin against my skin—and then it tore. A ripping sensation deep in my chest, silver wire pulled taut and snapped. My knees buckled. I couldn't breathe.

Connor stood on the platform in front of the entire Ironvale Pack, his hand raised, his voice steady and ceremonial. "I, Connor Henderson, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Blaire Westbrook, as my mate and Luna."

The words landed like stones.

I was wearing white. Ceremonial silk, hand-stitched, the kind of gown that takes three fittings and costs more than most wolves earn in a season. I had picked it out myself. I thought he would like it.

The crowd was silent. Two hundred wolves packed into the ceremonial hall, dressed in their formal best, holding candles that flickered in the low light. They had come to witness a bonding. Instead, they were watching me get erased.

Alyssa Cole stepped forward from the front row.

She was wearing a Luna's gown. Crimson and gold, cut to her body like a second skin. Her hair was pinned up with silver clasps I recognized—they had been in the pack vault. Reserved for the Luna. She walked up the platform steps without hesitation, took her place at Connor's side, and smiled.

The mark on my neck pulsed once, cold and hollow, and then went completely numb.

I pressed my hand to my chest. My heart was still beating. That surprised me.

Connor didn't look at me. He was looking at the crowd, his shoulders squared, his Alpha aura radiating outward in controlled waves. He looked proud.

I had built that pride. Every alliance he claimed, every training rotation that cut injury rates in half, every territorial defense grid that kept Ironvale standing while other packs collapsed around us—I had designed all of it. He signed his name. I did the work.

And now he was standing in front of everyone I had protected, rejecting me for a woman who had sold our patrol routes to Shadowmere.

I straightened.

Connor's Beta—Marcus, a man I had trained personally—stepped toward me with his hand outstretched, ready to escort me out like discarded furniture. His face was carefully blank.

"Wait," I said.

My voice didn't shake. That surprised me too.

Marcus hesitated. Connor's head turned slightly, his jaw tightening.

I lifted my chin and spoke loud enough for the entire hall to hear. "I invoke the Right of Testimony."

A ripple went through the crowd. The Right of Testimony was old law—older than Connor's title, older than most of the wolves in this room. Any wolf could present evidence during a formal ceremony, and the Alpha was bound by pack law to hear it.

Connor's eyes narrowed. "Blaire—"

"You will hear me," I said. "Or you will break sacred law in front of every witness here."

His jaw clenched. But he nodded once, sharply. He had no choice.

I pulled the data chip from the hidden pocket in my gown and walked to the projection console at the side of the platform. My hands were steady. I had built this system myself. I knew exactly how it worked.

The logs appeared on the wall behind Connor. Timestamps. Data transfers. Communications between Alyssa Cole and Shadowmere operatives. Classified patrol routes—copied, encrypted, and sold.

The hall went rigid.

I turned to face the crowd. "Alyssa Cole has been selling Ironvale intelligence to Shadowmere for the past six months. Every route. Every shift rotation. Every weak point in our territorial defense. She is the reason Shadowmere knew exactly where to strike last month. She is the reason we lost three warriors."

Alyssa's face went white. Connor didn't move.

I kept going. "The evidence is time-stamped and verified. The server logs are stored in three separate encrypted locations. You can review them yourselves."

Silence.

Then Connor spoke. His voice was flat. "This changes nothing."

I stared at him.

"My decision stands," he said. He looked at me directly for the first time since speaking the vow. "She is still my chosen Luna."

The crowd shifted. Whispers started, low and urgent. Connor's father—Roland, the former Alpha—stood near the front with his arms crossed, his face unreadable.

Connor turned to Marcus. "Remove her."

Marcus stepped forward again. This time, he didn't hesitate.

I didn't fight him. There was no point. I had shown them the truth. Connor had chosen to ignore it. That told them everything they needed to know about the kind of Alpha he was.

But Connor wasn't done.

He stepped off the platform and crossed the space between us in three strides. His hand closed around my arm, his grip hard enough to bruise. His eyes were dark with rage—not at Alyssa, not at the evidence, but at me. For making him look weak. For speaking in front of his pack.

"You humiliated me," he said quietly.

Then he shifted.

Not fully. Just his hand. Claws extended, black and sharp, and he slammed me against the wall. The impact knocked the air from my lungs. His claws dug into my shoulder, and I felt the burn before I understood what he was doing.

Wolfsbane.

He was carving a sigil into my skin. A suppression mark. Designed to kill the wolf permanently.

The pain was immediate and total. It felt like molten silver poured directly into my veins, burning outward from the wound in waves that made my vision white out at the edges. My teeth clenched. My knees buckled once, but I locked them. I would not fall in front of him.

Connor leaned in close, his breath hot against my ear. "You will never shift. You will never challenge me. You are nothing."

He stepped back. Blood ran down my arm, dark and wet, soaking into the white silk of my gown.

Connor turned to face the crowd. His voice carried across the silent hall. "Blaire Westbrook is declared rogue. She is exiled from Ironvale territory effective at dawn. Any wolf who aids her will share her fate."

No one moved.

I pushed off the wall. My shoulder screamed. The wolfsbane was spreading, a cold ache that sank deeper with every heartbeat. But I walked. One step. Then another. I crossed the hall toward the doors, my head up, my spine straight.

I passed Roland Henderson. He didn't meet my eyes.

I passed Patrick Murray, Connor's second Beta. He was standing near the back, his arms crossed, his face carefully neutral. But as I walked past him, he looked at me. Just for a second. And he nodded.

I filed it away.

I walked out of the hall, through the pack-house doors, and into the cold night air. The bond-mark on my neck was ashen and numb. The wolfsbane burned. My gown was ruined.

But I was still standing.

And I still had the field notebook in my pocket.
