Chapter 2

The Beta arrived before dawn.

I heard the car pull up to the safehouse while the sky was still dark, that flat pre-morning black that holds no stars. Kai was asleep in the second bedroom. I'd been sitting at the kitchen table for three hours, the Luna Accord spread in front of me, reading the same clauses over and over until the words stopped making sense and became just shapes on parchment.

The knock was soft. Two taps, a pause, two more. Our old signal from back when we used to coordinate border patrols without alerting the younger wolves.

I opened the door.

The Beta stood on the porch with a leather case under one arm and exhaustion written across their face. They didn't wait for an invitation. They stepped inside, set the case on the table, and opened it.

"Duplicates," they said. "Every financial record from the last eighteen months. I kept copies in a separate location. Elijah never knew."

I stared at the neat stacks of ledgers and printouts. My hands were steady when I reached for the first folder. That surprised me. I'd expected them to shake.

"Walk me through it," I said.

The Beta pulled out a chair and sat. They didn't ask if I was all right. They didn't offer condolences. They gave me exactly what I needed: information.

"Thirty warriors," they began, flipping open the top ledger. "Reassigned to 'border patrol rotations' over the last year. I cross-referenced the assignments with actual threat reports. There were none. No rogue activity. No territorial disputes. Nothing that would justify pulling that many Deltas off regular duty."

I leaned over the page. The entries were in Elijah's handwriting. Neat, confident strokes. My throat tightened.

"Where did they go?"

"Ashvale territory." The Beta pulled out a second folder. "Supply shipments. Wolfsbane reserves. We should have six months' worth in storage. We have three weeks."

The number hit me like a fist. Three weeks. If another pack moved on us—if rogues organized an attack—we'd be defenseless before the month was out.

"He routed it through intermediary channels," the Beta continued. "Made it look like standard alliance gifts. But the quantities don't match. And the timing—" They slid a third document across the table. "Every major transfer corresponds with a visit from Chloe Dunn."

I studied the timeline. The dates lined up perfectly. Too perfectly. This wasn't impulse. This wasn't a man making mistakes because he was infatuated. This was systematic. Planned.

This was treason.

I sat back in my chair. The kitchen was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator and the faint sound of Kai's breathing from the other room. Outside, the sky was starting to lighten—not sunrise yet, just the barest gray creeping in at the edges.

"Seal these with a notary," I said. "Today. And make a second set of copies."

The Beta nodded. "Already arranged. The notary opens at eight."

I looked at them. Really looked. They had dark circles under their eyes and their shirt was wrinkled, like they'd been up all night pulling records. They probably had been.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

They met my eyes. "He built this pack on your work. We all know it. Some of us are just slower to say it out loud."

They left before full sunrise, the leather case tucked back under their arm. I stayed at the table, staring at the ledgers.

Inside my chest, Seraph stirred. Not words yet. Just a low, steady growl—like an engine warming up after years of sitting cold.

---

Rowan arrived at midmorning.

I heard her footsteps on the porch—slower than the Beta's, heavier. She knocked once and waited. When I opened the door, she was holding a wooden box about the size of a book.

"I brought you something," she said.

I stepped aside to let her in. She set the box on the table, right next to the financial records, and opened it carefully. Inside, wrapped in cloth, was a piece of parchment.

The Luna Accord. Her copy.

I'd seen it once before, ten years ago, when Elijah signed it in front of my adoptive father and the assembled elders. Blood-drop seal at the bottom. Witnessed signatures along the margin. Every clause written in formal script that left no room for interpretation.

"He tried to find this last night," Rowan said. "Came to my house after the ceremony. Said he needed to 'review the original terms.' I told him I'd misplaced it years ago."

I looked up at her. "You lied to your Alpha."

"I lied to a man who broke a blood-sealed vow in front of three hundred witnesses." Her voice was calm. "There's a difference."

I ran my fingers along the edge of the parchment. The paper was old, yellowed at the corners, but the ink was still dark. Still binding.

"Under Lycan Council law," Rowan continued, "a blood-sealed Accord can't be voided by Alpha authority alone. Elijah can claim it's void all he wants. The Council won't agree."

I felt something shift in my chest. Not hope—not yet. But something sharper. Clearer.

"How many elders share your position?"

"Three, besides me. They won't speak publicly until you move first. But they'll stand with you when you do."

I met her eyes. "How quickly can they convene?"

Rowan's mouth curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "As quickly as you ask."

She left the Accord on the table. When the door closed behind her, I stood there for a long moment, staring at the two pieces of evidence side by side: the financial records that proved treason, and the blood-sealed contract that gave me the legal standing to act on it.

Seraph growled again, louder this time. Still not words. But I felt her meaning.

*Now.*

---

That evening, Kai sat beside me at the table while I reviewed legal precedents the Beta had pulled from Council archives. He had his small notebook open in front of him, the one where he kept his running tally of pack business. He wasn't writing. Just sitting there, flipping the pencil between his fingers.

I could feel his restlessness. It hummed in the air between us—something electric and unfamiliar. Pre-shift sensations, probably. His wolf getting ready to wake up.

He didn't say anything about it.

I was halfway through a case file on inter-pack resource theft when he set the pencil down. The small sound made me look up.

He was staring at his hands. His jaw was tight.

"Kai?"

He took a breath. Then he said, very quietly: "My wolf only answers to you, Mom."

My hand stilled on the parchment.

I looked at him—really looked at him. His face was pale, his shoulders tense. He'd been carrying this. Holding it in. Trying not to add to my burden.

I pushed the papers aside and pulled him close.

He let me. He pressed his face against my shoulder and I held him, one hand on the back of his head, the other around his shoulders. He didn't cry. Neither did I. We just sat there, breathing together, while the kitchen light hummed overhead and the legal precedents lay forgotten on the table.

When I finally let him go, I felt steadier than I had all day.

Inside my chest, Seraph radiated something that wasn't quite a word yet. But it felt warm. Protective. Like she was wrapping herself around both of us.

Kai looked at me. His eyes were clear.

"What happens now?" he asked.

I glanced at the Accord. At the financial records. At the case files.

"Now," I said, "we build the case."
