Chapter 1

The morning sun filtered through the trees as I led the pack training session, my body moving on autopilot. I'd barely slept, my wolf restless and agitated all night. Hudson had come to bed late again, claiming Alpha duties kept him busy. The excuse was becoming as worn as my patience.

"Luna Maddie, are you okay?" Delta Jessica asked, concern etching her features as she watched me stumble through the demonstration.

"I'm fine," I lied, forcing a smile. "Just a little tired."

My wolf whimpered inside me. *Liar. We are exhausted. We are carrying the weight of a failing Alpha.*

I pushed her voice away, focusing on the pack members watching me. With Hudson increasingly absent from leadership duties, I'd been compensating, taking on more responsibilities than ever before. The Silver Moon Pack needed stability, and I was determined to provide it.

"Let's try the defensive formation again," I called out, stepping forward.

Three steps in, the world tilted sideways. My knees buckled beneath me as darkness crept in from the edges of my vision. The last thing I heard was the collective gasp of the pack as I collapsed onto the training field.

---

I awoke to the sterile scent of the pack infirmary and Dr. Sarah Mitchell's concerned face hovering above me.

"Luna Maddie," she said softly, her eyes filled with something I couldn't quite identify. "You gave everyone quite a scare."

"I'm sorry," I murmured, trying to sit up. "I don't know what happened."

Sarah gently pressed me back against the pillows. "You've been pushing yourself too hard. Your body needs rest."

My wolf stirred anxiously. *Something's wrong. Something's different.*

"Sarah," I whispered, suddenly afraid. "What's going on?"

The doctor's expression shifted, and she reached for my hand. "Luna Maddie, after all this time... you're pregnant."

The words hung in the air between us. Pregnant. After years of trying, of disappointment, of wondering if something was wrong with me or my bond with Hudson.

"The future Alpha heir?" I whispered, hardly daring to believe it.

Sarah nodded, her smile widening. "Strong heartbeat, about eight weeks along. You must have conceived right after the full moon ceremony."

Joy bloomed in my chest, warm and bright. This was it—the miracle we'd been waiting for. Hudson would be overjoyed. This baby would fix everything, heal the growing distance between us.

"Does Hudson know?" Sarah asked.

"No," I said, already swinging my legs over the side of the bed. "I want to tell him myself."

---

I practically floated down the hallway toward Hudson's office, my hand resting protectively over my still-flat stomach. My wolf, usually so restless lately, had settled into a contented purr.

*Our pup will make everything right again,* she whispered in my mind.

As I approached Hudson's door, however, she suddenly went rigid.

*Wrong. Something is wrong.*

I paused, inhaling deeply. The scent hit me like a physical blow—vanilla and sex, Ashlynn's arousal mixed with Hudson's distinctive musk.

"No," I whispered, my hand freezing mid-knock.

Before I could retreat, the door swung open. Hudson stood there, his shirt hastily buttoned, hair disheveled. Behind him, Ashlynn smoothed her skirt, her lips swollen and her eyes gleaming with triumph.

"Maddie," Hudson said, his voice too controlled. "What are you doing here?"

I couldn't speak. My throat closed up as my eyes darted between them.

"I—" I finally managed. "I have news."

Ashlynn stepped forward, her scent overwhelming in the confined space. "Alpha Hudson was just receiving some medication for an old scar. I was applying a poultice."

"On his chest?" I asked, my voice barely audible as I noticed the open collar of his shirt.

Hudson's expression hardened. "Enough, Maddie." His Alpha tone vibrated through the room, making me flinch. "You're being hormonal and paranoid. Ashlynn is my aide. She was helping me with a medical issue."

"But the scent—"

"Is nothing," he cut me off. "You're imagining things because you're tired and emotional. Maybe you should rest."

---

I fled to our chambers, tears blurring my vision. How could he lie so blatantly? My wolf howled in anguish.

*He betrays us. He betrays our bond.*

I curled up on our bed, one hand protectively covering my stomach. "I'll protect you," I whispered to my unborn pup. "I promise."

Suddenly, a sharp pain lanced through my mind. I gasped as a foreign presence invaded my thoughts—a mind-link I hadn't authorized.

Images flooded my consciousness: Hudson's office, but not as I'd seen it moments ago. This was earlier. Hudson pressing Ashlynn against his desk, his mouth on her neck. Her fingers tangled in his hair as she moaned his name.

"Again," she begged. "Call me yours again."

"Purr for me, Ashlynn," Hudson growled, his voice thick with desire. "You're mine. My chosen one."

The memory shifted, and I was back in the present, but the violation continued. Ashlynn's voice slithered through my mind.

*He may be your Alpha by law, but he is my man by choice. You are just the figurehead.*

I screamed, clutching my head as the mind-link severed, leaving me shaking and nauseous.

"She's lying," I whispered to my wolf. "She has to be lying."

But deep down, I knew the truth. The amnesia excuse was just that—an excuse. The affair wasn't a momentary weakness or a mistake born of confusion.

It was active. Malicious. And deeper than I could have imagined.
