Chapter 1

The moon was full when Aidan hit the water at 9:47 p.m., and I was already moving before his knees buckled.

Eleven years of reflex. My body did it without asking me.

I slid down the silver-edged rocks at the shoreline, palms tearing open on the sharp bits of ore the lake was famous for, and I dove. The cold slammed into my chest like a fist. My wolfsbane-thin arms found his shoulders under the surface—he was already sinking, his fractured aura sputtering, his wolf flickering behind his skin the way a bad bulb flickers before it dies.

Two hundred wolves lined the bank, and not one of them was in the water with me.

I dragged him up. He was heavier than any Alpha had a right to be. My left shoulder—the arrow scar—burned like it always did when I asked too much of it. I got his head above the surface. I got his back onto the flat stone. I got my mouth close to his ear and said his name, low, the way I had said it a thousand times through a thousand nights of rogue ambushes at the border.

"Aidan."

His eyes opened.

He looked at me for one breath.

And then his Alpha tone hit me full in the chest.

"Don't touch me."

It was not a request. It was a command carved into the air between us, the kind of tone that peels the skin off a lesser wolf's spine. My hands jerked back from him like I'd touched a live wire. My knees skidded on the wet rock. Behind me the lake sighed against the stones, and somewhere on the bank a wolf gasped—not for me. For him.

Hanna came down the slope in her warm amber wolf, ears forward, tail low in that practiced sunshine way she had, and she shifted mid-stride into a woman in a dry white dress and knelt where I had just been. She cradled his head into her lap. He breathed her in. His hand—the hand I had pulled out of the water—reached for hers.

Her scent hit the air around him and layered over his skin: something floral, something wrong, something almost right in a way that made my throat close. Not her scent. A borrowed thing. A stolen thing. Even weakened by wolfsbane I could taste the seams in it, chemical, hand-mixed, but Aidan drank it down like water.

I slipped backward into the shallows.

My palms were bleeding into the lake. Ribbons of red curled off my fingers and disappeared. I stood in water up to my thighs and waited for someone—anyone—to offer a hand.

No one did.

I walked out alone.

---

The path back to the den was pine needles and wet moonlight and my own dripping footprints. I made it maybe fifty yards before it happened.

Something inside my ribs pressed outward.

Not a voice. Not a thought. A pulse of heat, huge and white, shoving from the inside of my sternum as if a fist had punched me from within my own chest. I stopped mid-step. My hand flew up to my breastbone. I stood there in the dark, dripping lake water, and I felt—for the first time in eleven years of monthly tincture—my wolf.

Furious.

Silent, wordless, and furious.

The pulse subsided as fast as it came. My ribs settled. My breath came back. I lowered my hand. Somewhere far behind me I could still hear the pack murmuring around their Alpha and the she-wolf who was not me.

I kept walking.

---

At the formal feast, I found Hanna sitting in my chair.

The Alpha's table. Third seat from the head. Assigned to the Bonded Guardian for eleven consecutive years. She was laughing at something Aidan had said, her fingers resting on his wrist, and he was looking at her the way I had spent a decade waiting to be looked at.

He saw me. He did not correct it.

I took a seat at the end of the warriors' bench. Three wolves shuffled down. The fourth pretended he had already been that far away. I ate what was in front of me. I did not taste it.

---

The stripping came in daylight, the way these things do.

Border patrol briefings, first. "Restructured security priorities." Supply inventory and pack logistics, the roster read. When I found Aidan in the corridor and tried to tell him about the scent traces I'd picked up on the eastern perimeter—Hanna's herb compounds, bleeding into the trees where they shouldn't be—he cut me off before I finished the sentence.

"Your role is protection, not analysis." The Alpha tone laced through it like a wire. "If you can't separate personal feeling from duty, I'll find someone who can."

He walked past me.

I stood in the corridor for three full seconds without moving. And the thing in my chest surged again—harder this time, a second white pulse pressing against the underside of my ribs like it wanted out. I swallowed it. I did not raise the scent anomaly again.

---

Elder Nicolas found me in the storeroom that evening, counting silver-wrapped arrows I would no longer be permitted to carry.

He closed the door behind him. He is a quiet man. He waited until I looked up.

"Diana," he said—he always started with my name, as if reminding the room I had one—"the pack you serve is not what you believe it to be. There are debts older than your oath, and Ironveil has never paid them."

My hand stopped on the ledger.

"I knew your mother."

My breath caught. One second. Only one. Then I set the pen down and made my face still again.

"My oath does not expire," I said, "because the man I swore it to has become cruel."

He studied me a long time.

"I am preparing something," he said finally. "If the time comes, trust the vault beneath my old den. It will open for you."

He left before I could ask what was in it.

I stood alone in the storeroom with my fingers pressed—without meaning to—against the thin scar on my left shoulder. Outside, through the slatted window, I could hear Hanna laughing on the porch, and under her laughter, faint as a bruise, the eastern wind carried that wrong-sweet smell of her stolen herbs deeper into our woods.
