Chapter 2

I drove for three hours before I stopped. The diner sat at the edge of a state route, its neon sign flickering weakly against the dark. The parking lot was empty except for a semi-truck with its lights off. I pulled in, cut the engine, and sat with my hands on the wheel.

Seraphine was awake. She had been awake since the stone. She did not speak, but I felt her presence like a low hum beneath my ribs — steady, certain, no longer waiting for permission.

I took out my phone. The screen was bright in the dark of the car. I scrolled to the contact I had not deleted in five years, the one I had told myself I was keeping for professional courtesy, for networking, for reasons that were easier than the truth.

Callum Rodriguez. Lycan Prince. Pacific Court. The last person who had looked at me during training and said, "You're better than this," in a tone that made it clear he was not talking about the drill.

I pressed call.

It rang once. Then his voice, low and unhurried. "Waverly."

Not a question. He knew it was me. Of course he did.

I opened my mouth and found that the words I had rehearsed for the last three hours were gone. What came out instead was simpler, stripped of everything I had been carrying.

"I'd like to request reinstatement to the Royal Guard."

Silence. Not hesitation — something else. The pause of a man who would not perform surprise because he had none to perform.

"I've been waiting for this call," he said.

My throat tightened. I did not let it show in my voice. "When can I start?"

"Tomorrow, if you can make Seattle by noon." His tone shifted, became something fractionally warmer without losing its precision. "Your position was never filled."

I looked out the windshield at the empty lot, the dark trees beyond. "Why?"

"Because I don't fill positions for wolves I expect to return."

I closed my eyes. Seraphine moved again, a slow stretch inside my chest, the way a wolf moves when it recognizes home.

"I'll be there," I said.

"Good." A pause. "Waverly."

"Yes?"

"You don't owe anyone an explanation. Not me. Not them. Understood?"

I nodded, then realized he could not see it. "Understood."

The line went quiet, but he did not hang up. I could hear him breathing on the other end, steady and even, and for reasons I did not examine, I did not hang up either.

Finally, he spoke again. "Drive safe."

The call ended.

I set the phone down on the passenger seat and let my head fall back against the headrest. Inside me, the place where the bond had been was raw and empty, a wound that had not yet begun to scar. But beneath it, deeper, Seraphine was awake. Fully, completely awake.

I started the car and pulled back onto the highway.

***

The banquet was Elena's idea. My mother had insisted on it with the particular stubbornness of a she-wolf who had spent five years watching her daughter explain away fifty-six ceremonies and who now, finally, had something she could control.

"A proper farewell," she had said on the phone, her voice tight. "You are leaving with dignity, Waverly. The pack will see that."

I had not argued. Arguing required energy I no longer had for Ironridge.

The venue was neutral territory — a restored barn on the edge of the regional pack commons, strung with lights and filled with wolves from three neighboring packs. It was the kind of gathering meant to smooth over tension, to perform civility, to let everyone leave feeling that things had been handled appropriately.

I wore black. Simple, long-sleeved, nothing that required adjustment. I arrived alone.

The room went quiet when I entered, then resumed its noise at a slightly lower volume. I felt the weight of eyes that did not quite meet mine. Pity, I had learned, had a particular texture. It sat heavy in a room.

I took a seat near the back, away from the main tables. A server brought me water I did not drink. I folded my hands in my lap and waited for it to be over.

Then the door opened again, and Nikolas walked in.

Jasmine was on his arm.

She wore red — a dress cut low enough to make her look fragile, delicate, like something that needed careful handling. Her hair was loose over her shoulders. She looked up at Nikolas with wide eyes as he guided her into the room, his hand possessive at the small of her back.

He had not been invited.

The room did not go quiet this time. It went still. There is a difference. Quiet is the absence of sound. Stillness is the presence of held breath.

Nikolas scanned the room until his eyes found me. He smiled. It was not a kind smile.

He walked directly to the center of the room, Jasmine trailing slightly behind, and when he spoke, his voice carried the easy Alpha authority I had once mistaken for strength.

"Well," he said, addressing no one and everyone. "I see the theatrics are still going strong."

A few wolves shifted uncomfortably. No one laughed.

Jasmine tilted her head, her lips curving into something soft and pitying. "It's sad, really," she said, her voice just loud enough to reach the nearest tables. "When a she-wolf gets desperate enough to throw a tantrum and call it a rejection."

Nikolas's smile widened. "She'll be back. They always come back."

I looked at him. I did not blink. I did not speak. I simply looked.

The discomfort in the room thickened. Marcus Webb, standing near the bar, had gone the color of old snow. A Beta from the northern pack cleared his throat and found somewhere else to be.

Nikolas opened his mouth to continue.

The door opened.

The air changed.

Every wolf in the room felt it at once — a pressure that was not physical but undeniable, a weight that pressed down from above and made breathing require intention. Heads turned. Conversations stopped mid-word.

Callum Rodriguez stepped into the banquet hall.

He was not in ceremonial dress. He wore dark field gear, the kind the Royal Guard used on active missions, and he moved with the unhurried precision of someone who had never needed to announce himself. But it was not the clothes or the movement that made the room drop into submission.

It was the aura.

Lycan Prince. Full authority. Unshielded.

I watched it happen in real time. The Alphas in the room — wolves whose dominance was absolute within their own packs — went rigid. Their heads lowered. Their necks exposed. One Beta near the front actually stepped backward without choosing to, his wolf overriding conscious thought.

Nikolas's aura collapsed like wet paper.

His eyes went wide. His mouth opened. Nothing came out.

Callum's gaze swept the room once, then settled on me. He did not smile. He simply looked at me the way he had always looked at me — clearly, without performance, like I was exactly what I was and that was enough.

Then he turned his attention to Nikolas.

"Alpha Bishop," Callum said. His voice was quiet. It did not need volume. "You are addressing a ranked member of the Lycan Royal Guard. I suggest you reconsider your tone."

Nikolas stared. "She's — she's not —"

"Waverly Stevens," Callum continued, his words precise and unyielding, "is Lycan-blooded. Confirmed lineage. Royal Guard reinstatement as of today. Classified Pacific Court status." He paused. "You did not know."

It was not a question.

Nikolas's face did something I had never seen it do. It emptied.

Jasmine, still clinging to his arm, made a small, choked sound. Her wolf — never genuinely integrated, never trained for this kind of pressure — broke. She collapsed. Not gracefully. Not with control. She simply fell, her knees hitting the floor, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the Lycan aura pressed down on a wolf that had no framework to withstand it.

No one moved to help her.

I stood. I buttoned my coat. I walked past Nikolas without looking at him, past Jasmine on the floor, past the frozen wolves who had spent five years watching me wait.

Callum stepped aside to let me through.

I walked into the rain, and I did not look back.
