Chapter 13

CHAPTER 13 - THE WOLF WITHIN The forest grew darker as Lyria, Aiden, and the crater wolf made their way from the Enchanted Lake. The calm they'd felt there dissolved with every step, replaced by a thick, tense quiet. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath. Lyria sensed something shifting inside her-something deeper than the silver flame. Her instincts buzzed, sharper and louder than usual. Each sound in the forest seemed magnified. Each scent clearer. Aiden noticed. "You, okay?" "I... don't know," Lyria admitted, rubbing her arms. "Something feels different." The crater wolf glanced back at her. "The lake awakened your instincts," it explained. "Your wolf side grows stronger with each surge of your flame." "My wolf side?" Lyria whispered. "You carry two beings," the wolf said. "Human heart. Wolf soul. Neither can be ignored." Lyria bit her lip. "But I've always been able to control it before..." "That was before the flame awakened," the wolf replied. Aiden slowed his pace to walk beside her. "We'll figure it out. You won't face it alone." She offered him a small nod-grateful, but still uneasy. A Growing Storm Hours passed. The forest thickened until the sky disappeared behind layers of silver foliage. Strange lights flickered between the trees. Lyria's senses kept sharpening-almost painfully. She could hear water trickling a mile away. She could smell the exact moment a squirrel darted across a branch. She could feel Aiden's heartbeat when he walked close. It was overwhelming. Aiden noticed her flinch. "Lyria?" "I'm fine," she said too quickly. The crater wolf stopped suddenly. "You are not fine," it said. "Your wolf is rising faster than expected." Aiden turned to Lyria, eyes full of concern. "What does that mean?" Before the wolf could answer- before Lyria could figure out the throbbing pulse in her chest- something blurred in the shadows. A shape. Fast. Silent. Aiden reached for his sword instinctively. "Did you see that?" he whispered. Lyria didn't answer. She felt it more than saw it-a hunter's presence. Heavy. Watching. Multiple sets of footsteps crept through the underbrush. Not soldiers. Not spirits. Hybrids. Half-wolf, half-human. Like her. But wrong. Twisted by dark magic. Lyria's wolf senses screamed. "They're circling us," she whispered. The crater wolf bared its teeth. "Corrupted ones." Aiden drew his sword. "What do they want?" The crater wolf answered grimly: "Her." Losing Control The hybrids lunged first-darting from the shadows with sharp claws and glowing red eyes. Aiden swung his sword, blocking one as it leapt toward him. "Get behind me!" he called to Lyria. But Lyria couldn't move. Her wolf surged-wild and electric-rushing up with more force than she'd ever felt. The silver flame flared in her palms without her calling it. A hybrid wolf leapt toward her. Lyria reacted on instinct. She swung her arm- and a blast of silver fire erupted from her hand, sending the creature crashing into a tree. Aiden stared. "Lyria-!" But she didn't hear him anymore. Her heartbeat thundered. Her vision sharpened. Her instincts roared. She wasn't shifting-not fully. But she wasn't entirely human, either. Her wolf was taking over. Another hybrid lunged. This time, Lyria moved before she could think. She dodged with inhuman speed. She snarled-an actual wolf snarl, tearing from her throat. Aiden froze, stunned. "Lyria-stop! Stay with me!" She didn't stop. She launched forward, tackling one of the hybrids with terrifying strength. Her palms burned with silver flame, but instead of purifying gently... ...it seared. Lyria gasped as she felt control slipping. "Lyria!" Aiden shouted, voice breaking through the haze. She whipped around toward the sound-eyes glowing silver, breath ragged. Aiden's expression softened instantly. "It's me," he whispered. "You're safe. Come back." Her wolf hesitated-caught between instinct and recognition. The crater wolf stepped between them. "Silver One," it said gently, "your wolf is not your enemy." But Lyria couldn't stop trembling. "I-I'm losing control..." Aiden slowly lowered his sword and stepped closer. "You're not hurting me. You never will." Lyria's breath shook. She pressed her hands to her skull. "I can't- Aiden, I can't control it!" The silver flame surged wildly, spiraling around her like a storm. Aiden reached for her. "Lyria... look at me." She forced her eyes up. The chaos inside her slowed. Aiden offered both hands, palms open-unafraid. "You're stronger than the wolf. Stronger than the flame." Lyria's breathing steadied slightly. "I'm right here," Aiden said softly. "I won't let anything happen to you." Something inside her clicked- like a door unlocking- and the bond pulsed. Warmth washed over her. The flame quieted. Her wolf receded to a manageable rhythm. Lyria collapsed to her knees, chest heaving. Aiden caught her. "Easy... I've got you." She clung to him, shaking. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't mean to lose control." "You didn't," Aiden said gently. "You found it again. And that's what matters." The crater wolf nodded gravely. "This is only the beginning," it said. "Your wolf grows stronger because your bond grows deeper." Lyria swallowed, voice trembling. "What if next time I can't control it?" Aiden met her eyes-steady, sure. "Then I'll help you. Every time." Something warm threaded through Lyria's chest-fear mixed with relief. The crater wolf turned toward the shadows. "We must reach the Oracle soon," it warned. "Before Seraphina twists more creatures against you." Aiden helped Lyria stand, keeping a supportive hand on her back. Together-wounded, shaken, but still moving forward-they followed the wolf deeper into the forest. And with every step, Lyria felt the truth: Her wolf wasn't the only thing growing stronger. So was the bond-and the danger that came with it.

Ex-Wife, Please Have Some Self-Respect

I was driving through a rainstorm in upstate New York, pushing my old Volvo to the limit just to pick up a Dior gown for my wife, Catarina. She needed it for a gala tonight, where she planned to spend the evening standing next to the man she actually loved, Atticus Deleon. The truck hit me head-on, crossing the center line and sending my car rolling down an embankment in a shriek of twisted metal and shattered glass. As the steering column crushed my chest, my brain didn't see a white light; it was pried open by a digital tsunami, flooding my mind with the "Quantum Archive"-billions of data points on surgery, high-frequency trading, and combat. I woke up in the ICU with three broken ribs and a concussion, but the only thing waiting for me was a screaming voicemail from my wife's assistant. "Jorden, where the hell are you? Catarina has been waiting for thirty minutes! You are so incompetent it's actually impressive." There was no "Are you okay?" or "Are you alive?"-only fury over a ruined dress and a missing tie. While I was being resuscitated, my wife was on Instagram, singing "Endless Love" with Atticus and laughing at my "tantrum." She even called the family lawyer to freeze my credit cards, wanting to make sure I couldn't even buy a coffee without her permission. For three years, I had been the "useful husband," the doormat who apologized whenever she stepped on my toes. But the accident had overwritten my desperation with cold, hard logic, and I realized I had almost died for a woman who viewed me as a liability with a negative return on investment. When Catarina finally stormed into my hospital room to demand an apology for ruining her night, I didn't look at her with the usual puppy-dog eyes. I looked at her with ice in my veins and handed her a manila envelope I had drafted myself. "Sign the divorce papers, Ms. Evans. I'm done being your canary."

He stepped in, close enough that she had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. "This is just a contract." "Then why does it bother me?" His hand hovered near her waist, not touching-yet. "It shouldn't." Her breath faltered. His gaze darkened, "And yet it does."
