Chapter 2

The bracelet sat in my jewelry box for three days before I touched it.

I'd walked past the dresser maybe a dozen times. Opened the drawer once. Looked at the tangle of necklaces and earrings I hadn't worn in years. Closed it again.

On the fourth day, I pulled it out.

It was ugly, honestly. Cloudy green stone, worn brass clasp, the kind of thing you'd find at an estate sale for twenty dollars. My grandmother had given it to me when I was sixteen. She'd called it jade. I'd never bothered to check.

I turned it over in my hands. The metal was tarnished. The stone had a crack running through one side that caught the light wrong.

I set it on the dresser and opened my laptop.

The email took me fifteen minutes to write. I kept it light. Conversational. I'd met the editor—a woman named Claudia—at a charity auction six months ago. We'd talked about her magazine's coverage of local artisans. She'd given me her card. I'd kept it.

I pitched her a feature on Pacific Northwest family heirlooms. Stories passed down through generations. Objects that carried history. I mentioned the bracelet specifically. Described it as a rare antique jade piece, three generations old, with exceptional translucency and documented provenance.

I did not mention that the provenance was a handwritten note from my grandmother that said "To Esme, with love."

I hit send before I could second-guess myself.

Claudia responded within two hours. She loved the idea. Could we schedule a shoot?

Six weeks later, the magazine arrived in our mailbox.

I was at the kitchen table when I opened it. Grayson was across from me, eating scrambled eggs and scrolling through his phone. He didn't look up.

The bracelet was on page forty-three. Professional lighting. Black velvet backdrop. The photographer had done something with the angle that made the stone look almost luminous. The copy described its "exceptional translucency" and "rich cultural heritage." There was a sidebar about jade appraisal and the importance of preserving family heirlooms.

I set the magazine on the table, open to the page.

Grayson glanced over. His eyes caught on the image. He set down his fork.

"That's yours?" he said.

"My grandmother's," I said. "She gave it to me when I was a kid."

He picked up the magazine. Studied the photo. I watched his face. Watched the exact moment the calculation started.

"Huh," he said. "You ever get this appraised?"

"Not officially," I said. "I've been meaning to."

"You should." He tapped the page. "If it's in a magazine like this, it's probably worth something."

"Maybe," I said.

He went back to his eggs. But his eyes kept drifting to the photo.

I drank my coffee and said nothing.

***

Victor Huang's office was in a narrow brick building downtown, sandwiched between a tailor and a wine shop. I'd met him four months ago at a design industry event. We'd talked about his work. He'd mentioned his appraisal business. I'd asked questions. Remembered his answers.

I'd called him two weeks after the magazine feature came out.

His office smelled like old paper and furniture polish. He was a small, precise man in his sixties with reading glasses on a chain around his neck. He gestured to a chair across from his desk.

"Ms. Porter," he said. "Good to see you again."

I set the bracelet on the velvet mat between us.

He picked it up. Turned it over. Held it to the light. He pulled a loupe from his desk drawer and examined the stone for a long time without speaking.

"Interesting piece," he said finally.

I'd brought the magazine feature. The handwritten note from my grandmother. A photograph of her wearing it at her wedding in 1952. I'd had the photo restored and printed on archival paper.

Victor reviewed everything. Made notes. Asked questions about my grandmother's background. I answered carefully. Truthfully, where it mattered. Vaguely, where it didn't.

He worked for over an hour. When he finished, he typed the final appraisal on his letterhead and slid it across the desk.

One million, two hundred thousand dollars.

I read the number twice. My face stayed perfectly still.

"Thank you," I said.

"Of course." He handed me the bracelet. "I'd recommend insuring this immediately. A piece of this value—"

"I will," I said.

I stopped at a coffee shop on the way home. Ordered a latte I didn't drink. Filled out the insurance application on my phone. Uploaded Victor's appraisal. Submitted the paperwork.

The policy was approved in forty-eight hours.

I printed the documents. Filed them in a folder. Left the folder on my bedside table where Grayson would see it when he came to bed.

Then I put the bracelet back in my jewelry box. Closed the drawer. Walked downstairs.

Grayson was in his office. I could hear him on the phone. His voice was low. Warm. The voice he used when he was talking to her.

I stood in the hallway and listened.

"...just need a little more time," he was saying. "It's all coming together. I promise."

I walked into the kitchen. Poured myself a glass of water. Drank it slowly.

The bracelet was worth two hundred dollars. Maybe less.

But the appraisal was real. The insurance policy was real. The magazine feature was real.

And Grayson's greed was real.

I set the glass in the sink and looked out the window at nothing in particular.

Everything was ready.

Now I just had to wait.
