Chapter 2

The penthouse looked the same when Kieran walked in.

That was the first thing he noticed. Everything exactly where it should be. The lights on their evening setting, warm and low. The western windows pulling in the last of the day. The kitchen island clear and clean.

No Evangeline.

He checked his watch. Seven-fourteen. She usually had something on the stove by now, or at least had called down to the restaurant they liked on Mercer. It was their anniversary. She made a thing of that.

He set his briefcase down and loosened his tie and walked to his study.

The papers were in the center of the desk.

Two documents. Side by side. Perfectly aligned.

He picked up the first one. Read the heading. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.

The second. Letter of Resignation, effective immediately.

He stood there for a moment with both papers in his hands.

Then he laughed.

It was a short sound, mostly air. He set the papers back down the same way you'd set down a bill you'd deal with later and pulled out his phone.

He typed without sitting:

Stop being dramatic. We'll talk when you calm down.

He sent it. He put the phone face-down on the desk. Then he went to the bar cart in the corner and poured two fingers of the bourbon he kept for good days and carried it to the window.

The city moved below him. All that light.

He drank and thought about Scarlett. She'd looked better today, color coming back, the way she laughed when he clasped the bracelet. She was grateful. She was finally here.

He thought: Evangeline will be back by morning.

He took another sip and did not read further.

---

He was wrong about the morning.

His phone started at eight-twelve. Legal.

He answered with one hand, reaching for his coffee with the other. "Boyd."

"Mr. Boyd." His general counsel's voice had a specific flatness to it that Kieran had learned over years to associate with problems that had already cleared the point of prevention. "We've received a formal resignation filing from Evangeline Hart Boyd, effective as of yesterday. Immediate cessation. She's cited irreconcilable personal circumstances. HR is — yes, we're managing the operational side, but I needed you to know before—"

"I know," Kieran said. "I saw the letter last night."

"She also filed the divorce through the courts yesterday afternoon."

A pause. Short.

"I'll call you back."

He hung up and stood in his kitchen in yesterday's shirt and looked at the counter where there was no coffee made for him, no second mug, nothing that indicated anyone else had been in this room since he poured his own.

Marcus Webb was at his office door by nine.

Marcus had been with the Boyd Group for eleven years. He was not a man who showed up at doors without calling ahead. He was not a man whose face looked the way it looked right now — careful and pale, the expression of someone who has done math they wished they hadn't.

"Marcus."

"The papers on your desk." Marcus stopped. Started again. "I think you should read them. All of it. Before you call anyone."

Kieran looked at the documents he'd pushed to the side of his desk the night before. He pulled them back to center.

He read.

The divorce agreement took him four minutes. Each clause was exact. No softness, no room to argue — every shared asset addressed, every account itemized, every shared interest in the Boyd Group's subsidiary projects carved out with a precision that told him she'd known the firm's structure better than his own attorneys did. He'd built his legal team for acquisition and contract defense. She had built this document to be airtight, and it was.

He reached for his phone. His lawyer picked up on the first ring.

"I need you to look at something."

He heard the pause after the man finished reading. That specific kind of pause.

"Kieran. There's nothing to contest here."

"There has to be something."

"There isn't. She's filed through the courts, the grounds are documented, and every asset split is — honestly, she's been precise to the point where challenging any clause would cost more than the clause itself. Whoever advised her knew what they were doing."

No one had advised her. He knew that before the call ended. Evangeline had written this herself.

He signed it. He signed it quickly, sitting at his desk while Marcus stood in the doorway watching him the way you watch something fall. Kieran kept his expression flat. He told himself this was practical. Scarlett could move into Evangeline's role at the firm. The path was clear now.

He signed his name at the bottom and felt, for one thin second, like he was getting away with something.

Marcus did not move from the doorway.

"What," Kieran said.

Marcus looked at him for a moment. Then he said, quietly: "I'm going to go pull the active project files."

He left without explaining why.

Kieran turned back to his window.

Below, the city kept moving. All that light. He finished his coffee. It had gone cold.

He did not yet know what Marcus had seen in those files. He did not yet understand that the papers he'd signed in under a minute had not cleared a path.

They had opened a floor.
