Chapter 2

Elena's phone rang at 6:47 AM, its shrill tone cutting through the gray dawn.

Elena fumbled for it, still kneeling beside the sofa. His breathing had steadied through the night, but the fever still clung to his skin like a second layer.

"Elena, thank God." The charge nurse's voice was tight. "Multi-vehicle pile-up on the Brooklyn Bridge. We need every hand. Can you come in?"

"On my way."

She ended the call and looked at the man on her couch. Stable, for now. The wound held. The toxin was another matter—something she couldn't treat here.

Her phone buzzed again. A text from the hospital's billing department: "Patient Leo Blair: Payment deadline today. Failure to pay will result in bed reassignment."

Her stomach clenched. Leo. His surgeries, his medication, his future—all of it balanced on the thin edge of her meager resident's salary.

She scribbled a quick note—medication times, water, a warning about the toxin—and placed it on the crate beside him. Then, on instinct, she pulled out her phone and snapped a photo of his face. The wolf ring gleamed on his finger.

Just in case.

She locked the door and ran.

She'd been gone less than ten minutes when a black SUV screeched to a halt in front of her building.

Destiney Carroll stepped out, flanked by two men in dark suits. Her face—identical to Elena's in bone structure, but sharper, colder—was twisted with impatience.

"This is the address?" she snapped.

"Confirmed, Ms. Carroll."

Destiney looked up at the attic window. Her sister's window. Her sister's life. Her sister's kidneys—the only match that could save her.

Because when the twins were born, a fortune teller predicted that Elena would bring misfortune to the family. So she was abandoned at birth.

The doctors had given Destiney a year, maybe less. And Elena, her precious twin, had refused. Refused to save her own blood. Refused to give her the one thing that could keep her alive.

Fine. If Elena wouldn't come to her, Destiney would come to Elena.

She motioned to her men. "Break it down."

They didn't bother with locks. One hard shove, and the cheap door splintered open.

Destiney stepped inside, her heels clicking against the worn floorboards. The apartment was tiny, pathetic—a shoebox for a woman who had nothing and still refused to share.

Her gaze swept the room and landed on the sofa.

Her breath caught.

Keith Buchanan. She recognized him instantly—the youngest billionaire in New York, the man whose face graced every financial magazine. Unconscious, pale, bleeding on her sister's threadbare couch.

Destiney's mind raced. Elena had found him. Elena had saved him.

Of course she had. Perfect, selfless Elena. Always the hero.

Rage and jealousy burned through her chest. But beneath it, something else bloomed: possibility.

This man could change everything. His money, his power, his connections—he could fund her treatment, protect her from the family that treated her like a bargaining chip. He could give her the life she deserved.

All she had to do was take it.

She crossed to the crate and snatched Elena's note. She read it quickly—neat handwriting, medical precision. Toxin suspected. Wound sutured.

Perfect.

Destiney crumpled the note into her purse and turned to her men. "Get him to St. Andrew's. Private ambulance. And make it look like I saved him. Understood?"

They moved fast. Destiney stepped to the bathroom mirror and got to work. She mussed her hair, tore a small rip in her skirt, and dragged her nails down her forearm until thin lines of blood welled up.

Then she turned her attention to Keith. She unwound the bandage Elena had so carefully applied, loosening the stitches just enough to make the wound look messier—less professional, more panicked. She scattered gauze pads across the floor, knocked over the water glass, created chaos.

Now it looked like her work. Frantic. Desperate. Heroic.

When everything was in place, she sat on the edge of the sofa, took Keith's limp hand, and dialed the Buchanan family's emergency contact number.

When she spoke, her voice was a masterpiece of trembling, tearful vulnerability. "Hello? I... I found Mr. Keith Buchanan. He's injured... yes, it's me. I saved him..."

Miles away, at the hospital, Elena couldn't stop worrying about the man she'd left in her apartment. Had she done the right thing by saving him? Was she inviting unnecessary trouble into her life? Everything was uncertain.

"You okay, El?" Her friend and colleague, resident Chloe Hayes, touched her arm. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Elena forced a smile. "Just a rough night. Didn't get much sleep." She couldn't tell Chloe. She couldn't drag her into this mess.

Back at the apartment, a private medical team and a squad of expressionless bodyguards had already arrived. They saw the scene carefully staged: the beautiful, tear-streaked Miss Destiney Carroll, bravely keeping vigil beside the injured Mr. Buchanan.

Destiney sobbed softly as she recounted to the butler a completely fabricated story of fighting off attackers, her voice trembling with calculated courage.

The butler was deeply grateful, assuring her that the Buchanan family would forever be in her debt.

Keith was carefully transferred to a stretcher and carried out.

Destiney, now established as the "savior"—and, as she tearfully claimed, his "fiancée"—was escorted into a black luxury sedan. She cast one last glance back at the dilapidated apartment building, a triumphant sneer curling at the corners of her lips.
