Chapter 5

The pack house felt smaller every day.

Elliot had assigned two warriors to shadow me—young Deltas named Garrett and Finn who followed three paces behind whenever I left the Luna quarters. He framed it as protection. 'You're still recovering,' he'd said that morning, his hand warm on my shoulder. 'I don't want you overexerting yourself.'

Through the bond I felt his satisfaction. He thought the leash was invisible.

I smiled at him. I thanked him. I let Garrett and Finn trail me to the library, to the gardens, to the small sitting room where I pretended to rest while cataloguing every word they reported back.

Lena brought me tea in the afternoons. Her hands shook less now. She'd learned to pass messages in the angle of a cup, the placement of a napkin. Yesterday's napkin had been folded twice—Jared's signal that the final relay was coming.

This morning, it arrived.

I woke before dawn. The mind-link hummed faintly, muffled by distance and the wards Elliot had placed around the pack house. I pushed through the static until I found Jared's thread.

The message was long. Detailed. Clinical.

Owen's location confirmed. Scent markers documented. Physical evidence catalogued—bruises, malnutrition, the particular pattern of neglect that a Council healer would recognize immediately. Blood-scent profile ready for verification. Coordinates precise enough for an extraction team.

And beneath it all, the formal petition. Drafted in the language of rogue tracker testimony, every accusation supported by evidence that could not be argued away. The fabricated feral episodes. The hidden child. The affair. The planned silver-branding ritual.

Jared needed my authorization to submit it through the back channels that bypassed pack jurisdiction.

I read the file once. My wolf stirred beneath my ribs, a low frequency that resonated in my bones.

I sent back two words: *Submit it.*

Then I added two more directives.

First: extract Owen from Cynthia's cabin and bring him to my parents at the safe location we'd arranged outside Shadowvale territory. Time it for when Cynthia would be at the pack house—during the ritual, when she couldn't intervene.

Second: coordinate the loyalist warriors inside Shadowvale who would block the branding chamber at the critical moment. Confirm the Lycan Council enforcers' arrival window.

Jared's acknowledgment came back without flourish. Just: *Understood.*

I closed the link. I sat very still in the pre-dawn dark and felt the pieces click into place.

Then I wrote a letter to my parents.

I explained everything. The affair. Owen. The silver-branding ritual. The evidence Jared had gathered. The Council petition already submitted. I told them to receive Owen and hold him safe until the enforcers arrived. I told them not to come to the pack house, no matter what they heard.

I folded the letter. Sealed it. When Lena arrived with breakfast, I handed it to her with instructions to deliver it to my mother personally.

Lena took it without a word. Her hands didn't shake.

---

That afternoon, Elliot called a formal pack assembly.

The main hall filled quickly. Warriors, Omegas, the pack council, visiting wolves from allied territories. I sat beside Elliot at the high table, my leg carefully positioned, my hands folded in my lap.

Elliot stood. The room quieted.

'I want to thank you all for your patience during Luna Serena's recovery,' he began. His voice was warm. Steady. 'These past weeks have been difficult for all of us. Watching her suffer—knowing my condition caused it—'

He paused. Let the grief show. The pack leaned in.

'I've consulted with healers across three territories,' he continued. 'And I've found someone who specializes in trauma recovery. Dr. Voss will arrive tomorrow to perform a healing ritual. It's an old practice, rarely used, but the results are—promising.'

He turned to me. His hand found mine. Through the bond I felt satisfaction, control, the certainty that everything was proceeding exactly as planned.

'Serena has agreed to try,' he said softly. 'For the pack. For us.'

The assembly erupted in applause. I heard murmurs of approval, relief, gratitude. Someone called out a blessing. Another wolf wiped tears from her eyes.

I smiled. I squeezed Elliot's hand. I let the gratitude show on my face—the perfect image of a Luna willing to endure anything for her mate's peace of mind.

Inside, my wolf growled.

Elliot addressed the room again. 'The ritual will take place tomorrow evening. I invite you all to attend as witnesses. To support your Luna. To see that Shadowvale takes care of its own.'

More applause. The pack council nodded approvingly. Beta Marcus stepped forward to coordinate logistics.

I sat very still. I pressed my thumb against the mark on my neck and felt through the bond the satisfaction radiating from Elliot—warm and uncomplicated, the certainty of a man who believed he had already won.

Beneath the table, my other hand rested on my stomach. The second heartbeat pulsed quietly.

The trap was set. Both of ours.

Only one of us knew both traps existed.

---

That night, I didn't sleep.

I sat at the desk in the Luna quarters and reviewed everything one last time. Jared's extraction timeline. The Council enforcers' arrival window. The loyalist warriors positioned inside the pack house. My parents, waiting at the safe location with instructions to receive Owen.

The pieces were in place. The file was submitted. The petition was already working its way through the Council's back channels.

All I had to do was survive until tomorrow evening.

I closed my eyes. I felt my wolf stir—louder now, closer to the surface than she'd been in years. The dormant thing that had slept since adolescence, waking inch by inch as the wolfsbane wore off and the danger grew sharper.

I didn't know if she would be enough. I didn't know if the awakening Jared had mentioned in his files—the explosive, uncontrollable emergence of an Alpha-bloodline wolf suppressed too long—would happen before the silver brand touched my spine.

I only knew I was out of time.

I opened my eyes. I looked at the mark on my neck in the mirror—Elliot's mark, the bond that had been a cage for five years.

Tomorrow, it would break.

One way or another.

---

The next evening arrived too quickly.

Lena helped me dress. A simple white gown, soft and ceremonial. My hair loose. No jewelry except the thin silver chain my mother had given me years ago.

I looked like a bride. Or a sacrifice.

Lena's hands trembled as she fastened the last clasp. I caught her wrist gently.

'Thank you,' I said quietly. 'For everything.'

She nodded. Her eyes were wet. She didn't say anything.

Garrett and Finn escorted me downstairs. The main hall had been cleared. In its place, a smaller chamber—one I'd never seen used before. Stone walls. Low lighting. And at the center, a flat table with restraints already attached.

The pack filled the space around it. Silent. Watching.

Elliot stood beside the table. Next to him, a man I didn't recognize—tall, gaunt, with the particular stillness of someone who had done things he could not undo. Dr. Harlan Voss, I assumed. The disgraced healer.

Elliot's eyes found mine. Through the bond I felt anticipation. Certainty. The final move of a game he thought he'd already won.

I walked forward. My leg barely ached. My wolf hummed beneath my ribs, a frequency building toward something I couldn't name yet.

I reached the table. I looked at Elliot.

'I'm ready,' I said softly.

He smiled. He took my hand. He helped me onto the table.

And as I lay down, as Dr. Voss stepped forward with the silver brand glowing faintly in his hands, as the pack watched in reverent silence—

The door at the far end of the chamber opened.

Jared stepped through first. Then four loyalist warriors. Then my mother, her face composed and terrible.

And in her arms, small and trembling and alive—

Owen.

Elliot's hand tightened on my shoulder. Through the bond I felt the first crack of his control—shock, fury, the beginning of something that looked like fear.

Dr. Voss hesitated. The brand hovered above my spine.

I looked up at Elliot. I let him see it. The steel. The certainty. The trap he had never seen coming.

'The Lycan Council,' I said quietly, 'is already here.'
