Chapter 3

I kept my eyes locked on the heavy-stock paper resting near the toe of my rubber clog. The typed date glared back at me. This coming Friday. But it was the small, embossed text in the top right corner that made my pulse pound against my ribs.

Voss Capital.

Damon Voss. Marcus never brought him to dinner. He never showed up to company holiday parties. For seven years, Damon operated entirely in the shadows, acting as Marcus's invisible hand in every aggressive corporate takeover.

I folded the document fast. I slipped it into the deep pocket of my scrub top just as the heavy morgue door swung open.

Marcus marched back inside, his phone pressed to his ear. "I said handle it, Damon," he snapped into the receiver. He ended the call and shoved the phone into his jacket. "Well? Is the paperwork finalized?"

I stood up, keeping my posture rigid. "I have a question about your timeline, Mr. Hale."

"I am not answering any more of your questions," he said, stepping toward the stainless steel table. "I gave you the verbal confirmation. Crane gave you the legal parameters. Sign the release."

"Friday is an impossible deadline for a cremation," I told him, holding my clipboard tight against my chest. "The state requires a mandatory waiting period for unidentified remains. Why the rush?"

"She is not unidentified," Marcus growled, taking a step toward me. His expensive cologne washed over the metallic scent of the room. "She is my wife. I shared a bed with her for nine years."

"Then you should know her dental records," I countered.

"I know her ring," he said, pointing a sharp finger at the corpse. "I know the car she drove. I know the clothes she wore. I am not playing this bureaucratic game with you anymore."

"It is not a game, Mr. Hale. It is the law."

"The law is a tool," Marcus snapped. "And right now, you are a broken tool holding up my schedule. Why do you care so much? You process dead bodies all day. Just stamp the file."

"Because a cremation is permanent," I said. "Once she is ash, there is no going back. Why Friday?"

Marcus dragged a hand over his perfectly styled hair, ruining the part. "Because there is a time window with the trust."

The words hung in the freezing air.

He knew.

Marcus actually thought his dead wife's money was waiting for him at the finish line. He knew my death unlocked the funds, but he had absolutely no idea I controlled the locks.

"A trust time window," I repeated, letting my voice drop into a flat, clinical tone. "I see. Financial urgency overrides forensic protocol."

Marcus blinked, realizing his slip. He straightened his shoulders, pulling his suit jacket taut. "That is none of your concern. My financial affairs are private. You just need to do your job."

"I need to log these forms into the main hospital terminal," I said, stepping around the table. "Wait here."

"How long?" he demanded.

"Five minutes."

"I don't have five minutes!" he shouted, his face flushing red. "I have investors waiting. I pay a premium to this hospital to avoid standing in a freezing basement arguing with a glorified lab tech."

"Then you can explain to your investors why the police are seizing this body for a mandatory thirty-day hold," I shot back.

His jaw snapped shut. His hands curled into fists at his sides.

"Five minutes, Mr. Hale," I said.

I didn't wait for his response. I pushed through the swinging doors and walked down the sterile white hallway. My rubber clogs squeaked against the linoleum. I didn't stop until I reached my private office.

I slammed the door shut and twisted the deadbolt.

I pulled my cell phone from my locker and dialed Elias. He answered on the first ring.

"He has a drafted death certificate," I said, skipping the greeting. "Dated for this Friday. And it has Damon Voss's company logo embossed on the header."

Silence stretched over the line.

"Voss Capital," Elias finally said, his voice dropping to a low murmur. "That explains the offshore accounts."

"What offshore accounts?" I asked, gripping the edge of my desk.

"I just pulled the latest pings on the estate's firewall," Elias said. "Someone is trying to bypass the primary beneficiary clause. Damon Voss has been busy, Vivian. He forged a series of overseas death records for you."

"How?" I asked. "I haven't left the country in two years."

"A boating accident in international waters," Elias explained. "They fabricated a flawless paper trail. They bribed a port authority official in Belize to issue a preliminary death warrant. Voss is using his shell companies to validate the claim. They are bypassing the standard New York probate courts entirely."

"That takes months to set up," I said, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.

"Yes," Elias said quietly. "They have been planning this for a very long time."

I stared at the blank wall of my office. Marcus hadn't just seized an opportunity when a woman crashed my stolen car. He had been waiting for an excuse to declare me dead. If the car crash hadn't happened, what was his original plan? A push down the stairs? Poison in my tea?

"They can't access the trust without my physical signature," I said, forcing my voice to stay steady.

"They don't need your signature if they have a medical examiner confirming the body in New York matches the offshore death registry," Elias countered. "Marcus is using you to validate his own forgery."

I walked over to the small window overlooking the hospital parking lot. Marcus was executing a forty-million-dollar heist. He was going to incinerate a stranger just to meet a banking deadline.

"He told me there is a time window with the trust," I said.

"He is right," Elias said, the tapping of a keyboard echoing through the phone. "The forged offshore records have a validation expiration. If he does not get the medical examiner's release by Friday, the international banks will flag the transaction for fraud. The entire transfer will collapse."

"So he needs the ashes and the official New York death certificate before the banks close on Friday."

"Exactly," Elias said. "He needs to burn the evidence."

I pulled the drafted death certificate from my scrub pocket. I smoothed the crumpled paper flat on my desk.

"I can stop it," I told Elias. "I can flag the dental records as a definitive mismatch right now. The police will arrest him for attempting to destroy evidence."

"No," Elias said sharply.

"He is committing fraud, Elias."

"If you flag the teeth, Marcus walks away," Elias said. "He will claim grief blinded him. He will say he honestly believed it was you. Damon Voss will erase the offshore paper trail before the police even get a warrant. You will save the trust, but Marcus will stay out of prison."

My jaw tightened. "I want him in prison."

"Then we need the wire transfer to initiate," Elias said. "We need him to commit the federal crime. Once the money moves across state lines under false pretenses, the FBI takes over. But he won't trigger the wire transfer until he thinks he has the medical examiner's approval."

"He wants me to sign the release form today."

"You have to sign it."

I gripped the phone tighter. "If I sign that form, he burns an innocent woman's body."

"You will sign a conditional release," Elias corrected. "It gives him the paperwork he needs to trigger the bank transfer, but it delays the actual cremation by three days. It buys us time."

"How much time?" I asked.

"Seventy-two hours," Elias said, his voice turning grim.

I looked at the clock on my wall. It was Tuesday afternoon.

"Vivian, starting now, you have seventy-two hours until that money moves beyond your reach," Elias told me. "You only have one way to freeze it before the cremation, but you have to let Marcus think he won first."
