In the eleventh year of waiting for my billionaire boyfriend, I married his brother

For eleven years, I waited for Nolan to put a ring on it. On the day we were supposed to get our license, I stood alone at City Hall—then watched his Instagram: him kissing another woman. The next morning, I found them tangled in bed. His new wife demanded my job; he fired me without blinking. Overnight, I became the mistress who wrecked their marriage. So I resigned and disappeared. But on the other side of heartbreak waited Quinn—Nolan's eldest brother, the man everyone whispered was dying. He wasn't sick. He was hiding. And he remembered me from childhood. Now Nolan wants me back, Quinn wants my heart, and I want my life.

Chapter 3

"Sign the NDA, Michelle. It’s the easiest way out."

Marcus Finch, the lead corporate attorney for the Gallagher family, slid a thick stack of papers across the mahogany conference table.

I ignored the pen he offered. My eyes remained fixed on the glowing flat-screen mounted on the wall behind him.

*MYSTERY CFO EXPOSED AS HOMEWRECKER.*

The headline blared in bright red letters across a major news network. Below it, a montage of photos played on a loop. Me and Nolan at a charity gala five years ago. Me handing him a coffee outside a hotel last month. The media had expertly cropped out the context, framing every interaction as an illicit affair.

"He sent you instead of coming himself?" I asked, my voice dangerously even.

Finch adjusted his tie, looking everywhere but at my face. "Nolan is managing the stock drop. Shares plummeted twelve percent this morning. The board is demanding someone take responsibility."

"And that someone is me."

"The narrative is already out of control," Finch reasoned, tapping the NDA. "The press thinks you knew about the marriage contract and refused to step aside. If Nolan defends you now, the Prescott merger collapses. Admitting you're stepping down is best for everyone."

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table. A sudden, genuine smile stretched across my face. It was the last reaction he expected.

Finch blinked, startled. "Do you find this amusing?"

"I find it enlightening," I corrected, the smile dropping instantly. "I spent ten years building this empire. I thought we were partners. But to him, I'm just the most convenient sacrifice."

"Michelle, be reasonable—"

"Tell the board they have my resignation," I interrupted, pushing my chair back. It scraped loudly against the floor. "But I'm not signing your gag order. I'm handling the press my way."

Finch shot to his feet. "You can't go rogue on this! We have a coordinated PR strategy!"

"Your strategy involves burying me alive," I shot back, grabbing my coat. "I'm done playing dead."

Forty-five minutes later, the blinding flash of fifty cameras assaulted my eyes.

I stood at the podium in the Gallagher Tech media room. The noise was deafening. Reporters shoved microphones toward my face, shouting over one another.

"Is it true you pursued Nolan Gallagher knowing he was engaged?"

"Did you manipulate company funds to keep him?"

"Miss, do you have any apologies for Olivia Prescott?"

I grabbed the edges of the wooden podium. I didn't cry. I didn't shake. I leaned into the microphone.

"Quiet."

The single word cut through the chaos. The room fell into a tense, expectant silence.

"I am officially resigning from my position as Chief Financial Officer of Gallagher Tech, effective immediately," I announced, meeting the gaze of the front-row journalists.

A fresh wave of whispers rippled through the crowd.

"Are you admitting fault?" a reporter yelled from the back.

"I am admitting that my time here is over," I replied, my tone sharp enough to cut glass. "From today on, I have no relationship with Nolan Gallagher. Personal or professional."

"So you lost the battle for his heart?" a woman from a tabloid sneered.

I locked eyes with her. "I didn't lose. I just finally don't want to play this game anymore."

I stepped away from the podium. The journalists erupted into a frenzy, but I ignored them. I walked straight down the center aisle, pushing through the double doors and out into the hallway.

A silver trash can sat next to the elevator bank.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the plain platinum band I had bought for myself, the one I meant to wear after City Hall. It felt heavy in my palm.

I tossed it.

The metal hit the bottom of the bin with a hollow, final clink.

The elevator doors opened. I stepped inside and pressed the button for the lobby, leaving the noise behind.

Two hours later, the automatic glass doors of the international terminal slid open. The roar of jet engines and the chaotic hum of travelers swallowed me. I gripped the handle of my rolling suitcase, keeping my gaze fixed on the security checkpoint ahead.

"Michelle! Stop!"

The frantic shout tore through the terminal.

I didn't pause. I kept moving, weaving past a family wrangling three toddlers.

"Michelle, wait!"

A hand clamped down on my shoulder, spinning me around.

Nolan stood there, chest heaving, his designer suit wrinkled and his hair a mess. He looked panicked. It was the first time in ten years I had ever seen him lose his perfect composure.

"You can't just leave," he gasped, his grip tightening on my coat. "I saw the press conference. What the hell did you do?"

I shoved his hand off me. "I freed you. Go enjoy your wife."

"You humiliated me on national television!" he shouted, drawing stares from passing passengers. "You made it sound like I'm nothing to you!"

"You are nothing to me."

"Stop lying!" He stepped into my space, desperate. "I know you're hurt. But we can fix this. Just give me time to finalize the European assets. Don't throw away a decade over a piece of paper!"

"It wasn't a piece of paper, Nolan. It was a choice. And you chose her."

"I chose the company!"

"Then marry the company." I grabbed the handle of my suitcase. "Do not contact me again."

I turned my back on him and walked toward the TSA line.

"Michelle!" he yelled, his voice cracking. "If you walk through that gate, there is no coming back from this!"

I didn't look over my shoulder. I handed my ticket to the agent, stepped through the scanner, and disappeared into the dense crowd of departing travelers.

Outside the terminal, the biting wind swept across the departure curb.

A sleek, black Maybach sat idling in the VIP loading zone, perfectly positioned to view the glass walls of the airport entrance.

Inside the heavily tinted rear cabin, a man sat in the shadows. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his hands resting on a silver-tipped cane. Dark leather gloves covered his fingers. He watched the terminal doors with unnerving stillness.

"Sir," the driver spoke from the front seat, glancing at the rearview mirror. "Gallagher is still standing by the security checkpoint. He looks like he's having a breakdown."

The man in the back didn't spare a glance for Nolan. His pale, sharp eyes remained fixed on the spot where I had vanished into the crowd.

A harsh cough racked his chest. He pulled a pristine white handkerchief from his pocket, pressing it to his mouth until the spasm passed. He folded the cloth away, his expression entirely unreadable.

This was Quinn. The ghost of the city's most powerful family. The heir everyone whispered was too sick to live, let alone rule.

He tapped his gloved finger against the head of his cane.

"Forget the boy," Quinn murmured, his voice a low, raspy gravel that commanded absolute obedience. "Follow her."
