Chapter 3

The summons came at dawn, carried by a rider in Darius's colors who didn't bother dismounting to deliver it - just called Mira's false name toward the cottage (how he'd gotten even that much, she didn't want to guess), informed her that the Alpha King required her presence at court by midday, and left before she could refuse.

"You could run," Greta said, watching her dress with hands that had gone very still.

"And go where? He knows my scent now. He knows this cottage isn't far from where he found me." Mira pulled her hair back, hard, the way she did before a hunt. "Running just tells him I have something to run from."

"You do have something to run from."

"Then I'd better be very convincing," Mira said, "about not having it."

The fortress, when she reached it, was worse than she'd imagined - not in its size, though it was enormous, stone and iron and old power carved into every wall, but in the sheer number of eyes that followed her through the gate. Word traveled fast in a court built on suspicion. By the time she was brought into the hall, half the room already seemed to know she was the stranger who'd bandaged the Alpha King in the woods, and none of them had decided yet whether that made her interesting or dangerous.

Darius sat at the head of the hall on something that wasn't quite a throne - too practical for that, too unadorned - dressed now in a way that made yesterday's wounded, hooded stranger nearly unrecognizable.

Golden eyes found her the moment she crossed the threshold and didn't move again.

He looks different with his crown on, she thought. And exactly the same.

"Approach," he said, and the single word carried more command than anything she'd heard from him in the woods.

She did, chin level, refusing to let the room's collective attention shrink her. She'd spent twenty-two years being trained not to shrink.

"This is the wolf who tended your wounds, my lord?" The voice came from Darius's left - a tall, broad-shouldered man in dark enforcer's leathers, close enough to the throne to matter, watching Mira with open, undisguised suspicion. Later she'd learn his name was Ronan, Darius's Beta, the man who'd apparently been arguing against this entire audience since sunrise. Right now, she only knew him as trouble.

"She is," Darius said.

"Then she trespassed on our border the night of the Ashwood raid," Ronan said, turning to address the room rather than the king, his voice pitched to carry. "An unclaimed wolf, no pack mark, no explanation for her presence so close to a rogue camp under attack. I say we ask ourselves what she was doing there before we thank her for playing healer."

A murmur moved through the hall. Mira felt it like a physical pressure, dozens of eyes recalculating her from "curiosity" to "threat."

Careful, she told herself. This is exactly what you trained for. Don't waste it panicking.

"I was hunting a rogue who'd been stalking the border for three nights," she said, before Darius could answer for her - she wasn't about to let anyone else narrate her own story. "The same rogue, I'd guess, who left claw marks matching the wound I dressed on your Alpha's ribs. Ask your trackers. They'll find the body a half mile downriver, if the current hasn't taken it further."

"Convenient," Ronan said, "that you happened to be exactly where the fire was, exactly where the Alpha was wounded, exactly where-"

"Convenient that you happened to send that raid into Ashwood territory that isn't formally claimed by anyone," Mira said, and let the words land before she continued, watching something flicker across Ronan's face that hadn't been there a second before. "Interesting, isn't it? A contested border. A sudden raid on a rogue camp that, as far as I can tell, wasn't threatening anyone. And somehow, in all the chaos, three families from that same stretch of land ended up removed from it entirely - the same three families whose land your patrols have been quietly absorbing for two months."

The hall went very quiet.

"I don't know what you were hunting that night," Mira went on, voice steady even as her pulse hammered, "but I don't think it was rogues."

She hadn't known that for certain when she walked in. It had been a guess, built from weeks of watching patrols creep the border, stitched together in the space of a single conversation - but she'd watched Ronan's jaw tighten at exactly the wrong moment, watched the color shift in his face when she mentioned the three families, and she knew, with the same certainty she used to read a wound, that she'd found something true.

"That's a serious accusation," Darius said quietly. He hadn't moved. His eyes hadn't left her once.

"It's an observation," Mira said. "I'm sure your Beta can explain the discrepancy, if there is one."

Ronan's face had gone tight and pale in a way that told its own story to anyone paying attention - and everyone in that hall was paying attention now. "I acted within my authority regarding contested land," he said, too fast, too defensive for a man with nothing to hide.

"No one accused you of anything else," Mira said mildly. "You did."

A ripple of something moved through the watching court - not quite laughter, but close enough to it that Ronan's ears went red. Mira watched the room's attention pivot, cleanly and completely, away from what was the strange wolf doing on the border and onto why is the Beta suddenly explaining himself. She'd walked into that hall as the accused. She was walking out of it, or would be soon, as something else entirely - and Ronan knew it, judging by the look he gave her, cold and sharp and entirely too aware that she'd just cost him standing in front of the one court that mattered.

Good, she thought, meeting his glare without flinching. Remember that I can do that.

"Enough." Darius rose from his seat, and the single word cut through the hall's murmuring like a blade. He descended the steps toward her - not toward Ronan, toward her - and the room's attention followed him, which meant it followed straight to the space closing between them.

He stopped closer than he needed to. Close enough that she had to tilt her head back slightly to hold his gaze, close enough that she caught, absurdly, the same low thread of awareness she'd felt on the ridge two nights ago. It was sharper now and undeniable, humming under her skin like something had been waiting all this time for exactly this distance to close.

"You have a talent for making enemies in under a minute," Darius said, low enough that it wasn't meant for the room.

"I have a talent for telling the truth," Mira said. "People tend to take it personally."

Something shifted in his expression - not quite a smile, but close to it, private, meant only for her. And then his hand found her wrist.

It wasn't forceful. It wasn't even deliberate, she'd think later - more like an instinct neither of them had agreed to, his fingers closing loosely around her wrist the way a man reaches for something he doesn't remember deciding to reach for.

The moment his skin touched hers, the world went white at the edges.

It wasn't pain, not exactly - it was too large for pain, a current running up her arm and down her spine and settling somewhere behind her ribs like it had always belonged there and was only now coming home. She heard herself gasp. She saw Darius's expression crack open - shock, raw and unguarded filled his eyes. The  ruthless Alpha King mask was gone for one unhinged second - and replaced with a horror too enormous to fully process, exactly what had just happened.

Mate.

The word arrived in her chest without her permission, absolute and undeniable, the way the mark on her collarbone had always been absolute and undeniable. Every wolf grew up knowing the signs. She'd simply never expected to feel them standing in the middle of a hall full of people, in front of the one man in the entire kingdom she'd been raised, trained, and sworn to destroy.

"No," she said, and it came out cracked, half a whisper, half a plea to a universe that clearly wasn't listening. "No - that's not-"

And that was when the rest of it arrived. Not slow, not gentle - all at once, the way memory sometimes returns when the body finally feels safe enough, or threatened enough, to release it. Smoke. Screaming. A voice calling her name before it was swallowed by something louder. She'd never been able to picture the faces of the men who'd burned her pack to the ground. She could picture this one. This jaw. These golden eyes, calm and merciless, standing in firelight while her whole life turned to ash behind him.

This is him. This is the man who destroyed everything. And my own body just called him mine.

"You," she said, and the word came out of her like something torn loose. "You did this. You burned my pack. You-"

"Mira-" It was the first time he'd said her name. It sounded wrong in his mouth, too gentle for what he was.

She didn't let him finish. Her blade was in her hand before she'd consciously decided to draw it, the same instinct that had kept her alive for twenty-two years overriding everything else - the mate bond, the crowded hall, the dozens of eyes now watching in open horror as the Alpha King's mate lunged at him with a knife.

He caught her wrist before the blade found skin. Of course he did. He was faster than her, stronger than her, and even now, even with murder in her eyes and betrayal roaring through every part of her, some traitorous corner of her chest ached at how careful his grip was - like he could have crushed her wrist and chose, deliberately, not to.

"I know exactly what you are," Darius said, quiet, only for her, gold eyes steady on hers even as she strained against his hold. "I've known since the night I found you."

The hall had gone utterly silent. Somewhere behind him, Ronan's hand had drifted to the hilt of his own blade, waiting for a word that hadn't come yet.

"Then you should have killed me," Mira said, breath ragged, blade still trembling in his grip.

"I should have," Darius agreed, and something in his voice cracked open in a way that made her chest hurt worse than the mate bond had. "I didn't."

The blade fell from her hand. Neither of them moved to pick it up.

Forbidden, she thought, distant and strange, watching gold eyes that belonged to her enemy and her mate in the same unbearable breath. That's the word for this. Not impossible. Not wrong. Just - forbidden. And some part of me already doesn't care.

She hated herself for the thought more than she'd ever hated him.

That night, alone in a fortress room with a bolted door and no memory of how she'd gotten there, Mira pressed both hands flat against her collarbone, over the mark, and finally let herself shake.

Fate had given her one clear purpose since she was old enough to understand what the mark meant. Kill him. Simple. Final. A debt owed to a pack she barely remembered, paid in the only currency that mattered.

Fate, it turned out, had also given her something else entirely - something with golden eyes and careful hands and a voice that cracked when it admitted the truth instead of hiding it. Something she was never supposed to want. Something that made "forbidden" feel less like a warning and more like the only honest word left in her vocabulary.

She didn't know yet which part of fate she was supposed to obey.

She only knew, lying awake in the dark of her enemy's fortress, that some part of her no longer wanted either answer to be simple.
