Chapter 3

SERENA'S POV

Julian looked at the agreement on the kitchen island, then let out a sharp, incredulous laugh.

He didn't look angry anymore. He looked amused, the way an adult looks at a child threatening to run away to the backyard.

"A divorce?" He shook his head, unbuttoning his suit jacket and tossing it across the back of a barstool. "Serena, be serious for five seconds. You're upset because of lunch. I get it. You felt slighted, and you're lashing out."

"I signed my proposal," I said. "Your lawyer can respond to Arthur. The divorce filing is separate, and he has my instructions to proceed."

Julian didn't touch the pen. Instead, he reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a manila folder, and slid it across the marble counter toward me.

"I had my legal team draft this two weeks ago when you started pulling away," Julian said smoothly. "I was saving it for after the charity gala, but since we're laying cards on the table, take a look."

I glanced down. It was his own proposed separation agreement, full of numbers and conditions.

"A three-bedroom apartment in Midtown," Julian explained, tapping the paper. "Fully covered maintenance fees, a brand-new SUV every three years, and thirty thousand dollars a month in discretionary allowance. You won't have to worry about your studio lease, and you can focus on your art without stressing over sales."

Under the housing allowance was a condition: I would continue attending public events as his wife until he chose to announce our separation.

"You have a comfortable life because you are Mrs. Julian Hart," he said. "Out there, you're a ceramicist with irregular income. Accept those terms and stop fighting with Vanessa. Or drop this entirely, and we can go to the gala as a family."

He tapped the allowance figure again. I pushed the folder back without turning another page.

"I don't want your Midtown apartment," I said. "And I don't want your thirty thousand a month."

Julian frowned, his patience thinning. "Don't be an idiot, Serena. How do you plan to pay for Lily's private school? Her equestrian lessons? Her ballet?"

"I'm not asking you to support me," I replied. "Lily's support and expenses will be worked out separately, with full financial disclosure. I have enough of my own to keep her in her school while the lawyers deal with it."

Julian let out another scoff. "You're living in a fantasy. You think pride pays private school tuition? You're throwing a tantrum, and you're using our daughter to punish me."

"Lily is not a bargaining chip," I said. "Arthur will send your lawyer our address and a proposed parenting schedule. I'm not taking her out of New York or cutting off your contact."

"You have no leverage here," Julian warned, his voice hardening into the sharp, commanding tone he used in boardrooms. "Without my family's backing, you don't have the resources to fight me. You have nowhere to take her."

Before he could finish his sentence, my phone on the counter buzzed. The caller ID flashed with the name of Arthur Thorne, the senior managing partner of Thorne & Associates.

I tapped speakerphone and set the phone down.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Laurent," Arthur said over the speaker. "The townhouse on East 74th Street is ready. Martha is there, and your driver is downstairs. Your grandfather also confirms that you and Lily are welcome in his family suite at the hotel tonight."

The silence in the penthouse became absolute.

Julian's hand stopped above his folder. He looked from the phone to me.

"Laurent?" he said. "Are you renting a room in one of their houses now?"

"Thank you, Arthur," I said into the phone. "We'll be down in ten minutes."

I ended the call and slipped the phone into my pocket.

Julian knew my maiden name. Before our wedding, when I had told him about my grandfather, he had laughed. "Every Laurent in New York claims to be related to that family." I had refused trust distributions and kept my studio financially separate from our household. After enough sneers about my imaginary fortune, I had stopped explaining myself.

Small suitcase wheels rattled across the hardwood floor.

We both turned.

Lily stood at the end of the hallway in her beige coat, holding her pink suitcase. She had tucked the plastic tiara under her arm. I slipped into the coat I'd left on a barstool and went to her.

Julian's throat worked. "Lily..."

Lily didn't answer right away. She walked forward, her small shoes tapping against the floor, until she stopped right in front of her father.

She looked up at him with wide, serious eyes. There were no tears on her cheeks. Her mouth was set in a quiet, stubborn line.

She lifted both hands and held out the glittering plastic crown.

Julian stared down at it. "What are you doing, sweetheart?"

"You can give it to Vanessa," Lily said softly.

Julian froze. "Lily, that was a present from Daddy. Because I'm sorry about yesterday."

"I don't want it," Lily said, her small voice steady. "I don't want to be your princess if princesses have to wait all the time."

She placed the cheap tiara onto Julian's open palm.

Julian's fingers closed reflexively around the plastic, crushing it slightly against his skin. For the first time since he had walked through the door, genuine panic cracked through his composure.

"Lily, no," Julian said, his voice dropping into a desperate, hurried whisper. He set the tiara on the island and dropped to one knee, reaching for her. "Don't say that. You're Daddy's girl. Look at me, sweetheart. Daddy was busy with work, but we can go to the zoo tomorrow. We can buy any toy you want. Come here."

He reached to pull her into his arms.

Lily took two quick steps backward, turning away from his hands, and pressed herself firmly behind my legs. She buried her face into the fabric of my coat, refusing to look at him.

Julian's hands hung empty in the air.

He stayed kneeling on the floor, his eyes wide, looking at the small space behind my legs where his daughter had hidden herself away from him.

"Let's go, Lily," I said gently, taking her small hand.

I grabbed my purse, leaving both proposed agreements on the marble island, and walked toward the foyer.

Julian scrambled up from the floor, his dress shoes squeaking sharply against the polished wood as he chased us down the long entryway.

"Serena, stop!" he shouted, catching up just as I opened the heavy front door. "You cannot just pack up my daughter and leave! You're making a massive mistake! You think you can cut me out? You'll cool off in two days and realize how insane this is! You will come back!"

I didn't turn around. I didn't give him the satisfaction of an argument, a glance, or a parting word.

I stepped out into the private elevator vestibule with Lily, pressing the button for the lobby. The heavy doors slid shut, cutting off the sound of Julian's voice.

Downstairs, a sleek black town car was idling by the curb under the canopy. The driver immediately stepped out, opened the rear door, and loaded Lily's small suitcase into the trunk.

"The hotel, Ms. Laurent?" the driver confirmed before closing my door.

"The Laurent Grand Hotel tonight," I said. "We'll move into the townhouse tomorrow, after Lily's things arrive."

The driver checked the seat belt across Lily's booster before closing her door. Then we pulled away into the late-afternoon traffic.

Beside me, Lily watched the penthouse tower disappear behind us.

She stayed quiet for several blocks before turning to look up at me.

"Mommy?" Lily asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Can we find somewhere Daddy can't make you cry?"
