Chapter 6

Amanda POV

After Laila finished greeting and talking to our old classmates, she came to me, and we moved to a quieter corner of the venue, where the music hung softly in the background, allowing for more intimate conversation. As we settled into a rhythm, our shared laughter painted over the distance that had crept in over the last three years.

She spoke animatedly about her rise as an influencer, detailing brand partnerships and collaborations. With each story, I felt a knot tighten in my stomach, the thread of comparison weaving itself back into my thoughts.

"...and I'll be travelling to Paris in three months for a fashion event! I mean, it's so overwhelming, but amazing! I'm just so grateful for all the opportunities," Laila exclaimed, her passion evident in her voice.

"That sounds incredible," I replied, though my enthusiasm felt forced.

The truth was, I had long ago stifled my dreams of grandeur, relegating myself to the comforts of my predictable routine. "I'm just...busy with work, you know how it is."

"Right, the whole 'doctor' thing!" Laila laughed lightly, but I caught a flicker in her eyes, a hint of genuine curiosity, and a twinge of envy washed over me.

"Do you love it?" she asked, her question hanging in the air. I felt the weight of it settle upon me.

"Love is... a strong word," I hesitated, scanning the room, seeking an escape. But as I met Laila's expectant gaze, I felt the dam within me begin to crack.

"I mean, I'm dedicated. It's rewarding in its own way, but," I paused, collecting my thoughts, "I can't help but feel overwhelmed sometimes. It's a lot of responsibility, and I get so caught up. I don't really have time for much else."

Laila's expression shifted slightly, an undercurrent of understanding tracing her features.

"You're doing something so important, though. I admire that about you," she said genuinely. "But I know that with the pressure of it all, it must feel isolating sometimes."

I blinked, surprised at her insight. "Yeah, it can be. I just... sometimes I wonder if I made the right choices. I thought I'd have it all figured out by now."

Laila nodded slowly, as if weighing unused words. "It's okay to feel that way. We're all just trying to figure ourselves out, you know? You're not alone in this."

I swallowed a lump in my throat. I had always relied on Laila's innate ability to see beneath the surface, but the burden of my fears left unvoiced had become heavy.

"It's just... when I look at you, I can't help but think I'm failing to keep up," I admitted, then pressed my lips together as the vulnerability washed over me.

"Failing? Amanda, don't even think that way!" Laila reached for my hand, squeezing it tightly.

"You've chosen a path that saves lives! That's incredible. Influence is one thing, but what you're doing is on an entirely different level."

The sincerity in her voice struck a chord, and I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes.

"I guess I just wish I could see my life as clearly as you do yours. It feels like I'm lost in a maze with no way out."

"Heavy stuff for a reunion, huh?" Laila tried to lighten the mood, but I could tell she was serious.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make this about me," I said quickly, regret filling the spaces where joy used to be. "I really am happy for your success."

"I know, and thank you," she replied. "But what you're feeling is real, and it matters. We've been through so much together. Don't forget that."

There was a fierce intensity in her gaze that made me feel both seen and exposed.

"I just..." I sighed, stammering through a circle of thoughts. "I tried to be someone I thought I was supposed to be. This career was supposed to make me happy, but at times it feels like it's suffocating me instead."

Laila's eyes softened. "You were always meant for more than just being a doctor, Amanda. You need to find what makes you feel alive again. Life can't just be about work. Find ways to let in joy, to make connections outside of the hospital. For a long time, I thought the same. It wasn't until I started documenting my journey that I found my voice."

"That just seems so... scary. I don't know if I can put myself out there like that," I confessed, my voice dropping to a whisper.

"It is scary. But sometimes it's just about taking the first step," Laila encouraged.

"Just because I've taken a different path doesn't mean you have to, too. Find what feels right for you. You deserve happiness just as much as anyone else."

I felt a swell of gratitude, my heart warming at the reassurance. For years, my insecurities had gnawed at me like insatiable shadows, and here was Laila, willing to share her light.

"Thank you, Laila. I genuinely appreciate you saying all of this. I don't know if I'd be brave enough to change anything."

"I think you might surprise yourself," she said, her smile brightening. "You always have."

Our conversation drifted from heavy truths to light banter, the familiar rhythm of friendship igniting anew.

Laila shared humorous anecdotes from her influencer life, recounting how she once had to apologise to a hundred viewers for a minor mishap in a live video. Laughter bubbled up, freeing me from the weight of earlier confessions.
